We've heard a lot of good things about Gibby's & had high expectations, but I don't think we will ever return. The dining room has nice ambience but it was cold since the restaurant is old & does not have good isolation or maybe the heaters are not powerful enough. the server has changed our table & made us sit next to the heater which is nice. The bathroom is very dated & doesn't seem to match the price we are paying for dinner. The major disappointment is the steaks. We are 4 so we ordered 2sirloin, 1 rib steak & 1 fillet mignon. All of them are under seasoned, dry, & like rubber. The steaks are pretty thick & we ordered either rare or medium rare. I can see the meat were cooked uneven. They also seem to be cold & the plate was not heated. Our server was nice & she changed my boyfriend's dish for another cut of meat because he didn't like his plate at all, but the replacement was also mediocre, blend & rubbery. It was my parents who is treating us so we didn't want to appear too picky. When I told the waitress our steak has not taste she brought more spices & asked us to put salt on it. I don't think i should season my own steak at the restaurant but I guess she tried the best she can do. The service was the only thing that kind of matches the price of the restaurant.
We dined at Gibbys during a family trip to Montreal. After making reservations months in advance, (we live in the U.S), Gibbys was absolutely the highlight a of our trip. My parents have been to Gibbys before during their anniversary & insisted we visit again due to the outstanding steak & incredible atmosphere. However, we were extremely underwhelmed by the service. Server did not offer any help with the cocktail menu as we wanted to order things that appeared to be "not possible" (we ordered a Moscow mule, no suggestions of anything similar, just a "no"). One of our diners is a picky eater, we called before to see if rice could be served as a side, which they insisted it could. Our server denied this being a possibility & didn't offer to check due to the obvious misunderstanding. He also got a few things wrong with our order & gave excuses as to how "this is better or fancier". Our experience of him was rude & condescending as he was insistent that we need to know how he was charging us, "this will be extra, I'm charging you for that…". Also they were out of the kabobs which is not the servers fault but another unfortunate part of the experience as it is my mom's favorite dish. Overall this was very disappointing as we LOVE this restaurant considering the price we expect an award winning experience or at the very least a server who is kind & attentive.
Go for the History, Not the Food or Service This was my first time at Gibby's, & after hearing so many good things, I was excited to try it. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. The evening started on a positive note. My friend & I were greeted by the hostess, & our jackets were taken promptly. This initial service was probably the best we experienced all night. Once seated, the waitress arrived, & things seemed to be moving quickly at first. We ordered a dozen oysters, a cowboy steak, a salad with blue cheese dressing, Monte-Carlo potatoes, & a Manhattan to drink. The Manhattan was fantastic-easily a 10/10. The oysters, which arrived after about 30 minutes, were good but not exceptional due to the accompanying sauces. From there, it was downhill. Service: 4/10 The service left much to be desired. For example, I had a bottle of Pellegrino with a quarter left, & the waitress attempted to take it away. When I stopped her, she poured the remaining water into our glasses without a word & walked off. Later, when we were served regular water, she filled my glass to the brim, making it difficult to lift without spilling. On the positive side, at least the alcohol arrived promptly. Salad: 1.5/10 I ordered the blue cheese dressing salad, & it was disappointing. While the lettuce was crisp, the dressing was terrible. I love salads-almost as much as steak-but this one was a letdown. Steak: 4/10 We ordered the 36 oz cowboy steak rare, & while it was cooked to the right temperature, it lacked flavor. Honestly, I've had better steaks at The Keg. For the price & reputation, I expected much more. While the size was generous & enough for two grown men, the taste was underwhelming. Digestif: 5/10 The lemon digestif was fine-nothing special, nothing terrible. Overall: If you're planning to visit Gibby's, understand that you're paying for the name & the historical ambiance, not the food or service. The total came to $400 with tip, which felt excessive for an experience that was mediocre at best. If you're looking for quality, head to Grinder instead-you'll save money & have a better meal. Verdict: Skip it.
We had our special night out on Dec 3 Rd 2024 Celebrating 42 yrs together Gibby s been part of this celebration 1982I order the rack of Lamb & was told that the Mint jelly that they always serve with this dish was change the sauce that came with it was very good! But I wish they would have the option of either Mint jelly or the new changes. I really prefer the mint with this dish! Thank you for a very nice evening ❤️
Had the opportunity to visit Gibby's during MTL á Table & tried the four course tasting menu. Everything was delicious, & the steak was cooked perfectly. Wine selection could be better but the South African Shiraz we ordered was really good.
Gibby's is expensive. The service was excellent(Nancy) the food was great. But the place is perhaps too casual for the price you pay. The wine list was shockingly simple, with wine prices at around 2.5X retail value - which is what you would expect from a good Steakhouse - but the choices were boring. Either they underestimate their clientèles tastes or I over-estimate what somebody spending 💰 expects from a wine list. For an above average steak & a night out Gibby's is a certainly great quality but not great value. The Keg is where I would go for a night out surrounded by people in jeans & T-shirts who aren't that into wine.
Gibby's is a consistently reliable steakhouse in a gorgeous Old Montréal location.
Oh, Gibbys! What an experience it was to treat my wife for her 28th birthday. The service was impeccable, with continuous attention to our needs, & plenty of delicious bites to enjoy while waiting for the main course, which was simply incredible. Special thanks to Vitaly for being so knowledgeable & friendly. We even received a huge, in-house-made cake for Madame that we couldn't get enough of! It was definitely worth spending a little extra for such a memorable night out.
I gave Gibby's 3 chances in the last 3 years & they've disappointed every time. This is a restaurant that relies very heavily on its history & "pedigree" & caters mostly to unsuspecting American tourists looking for a decent steakhouse in Old Montreal & Montreal natives who are clinging on to a relic from their past. The food in unquestionably not worth the price. The steaks are so chewy, that I'd recommend ordering them medium-well because they become more tender the longer they're cooked. The appetizers & sides are average;the Romanian style sausages were hard & tasteless, & I know because my wife is Romanian, & the side of rice they serve tastes as good as a greasy Greek dive. The service is friendly but slow & clumsy, despite the uniforms & overall "look" & for your money you're better off at any French restaurant nearby that will cook you a much better steak for less money...sorry Gibbys, I really tried my best!
I'm a fan of Gibby for 4 years, I love to come here for all the holidays, best service, best dining experience, I always order the well done fillet steak, but today is the first time I have eaten a dry, hard to swallow steak, I don't know if the chef was changed & a cut was made in the middle to make it well done. But the beef lost all its juice.
We spent our 25th wedding anniversary visiting friends in Montreal back in 2006 & we were just talking about Montreal & I mentioned having dinner at Gibby's. It was such a wonderful memory that I wanted to leave a review. The experience that night was unforgettable...even all these years later. Thank you for your attention to detail, your attentativeness to your guests & your dedication to serving the best food experience possible. You are etched in my memory & I am forever grateful. Gibby's Steakhouse in Montreal is a true gem for steak lovers. The chic & elegant atmosphere sets the stage for a memorable dining experience. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by a warm ambiance that combines sophistication with a welcoming feel. The quality of the meat is outstanding. What truly stood out during my visit was the exceptional service. I had some questions about other good restaurants in town, & the server was incredibly friendly & patient. He took the time to recommend several places, sharing personal insights that enhanced my overall experience. Whether you're a local or just visiting Montreal, Gibby's steakhouse offers high-quality food & service that makes for a fantastic night out. Highly recommended!
WOW! Gibby's did not disappoint! the service was amazing & ambiance dim & relaxing. The onion soup was great! steaks were very good & the potato was excellent. **Parents, do everyone else dinning a favor & don't bring young children
I came here for my anniversary with my boyfriend & it was incredibly special. I got the filet mignon & he got the salmon both of which were perfectly cooked & amazing. Our phenomenal server Kas recommended I get the mushroom sauce with my filet & I would definitely recommend. The meal comes with homemade pickles & bread to start, a salad, & a lemon sorbet pallet cleanser. When it was time for dessert, we were brought a whole cake for our anniversary & our server Kas took a polaroid photo of us which we will cherish for a long time. The night was just perfect, as was the food, & when I come back to Montréal I will absolutely be stopping at Gibby's again.
The quality of the food at Gibbys deserves to be among the best French restaurants in Canada. When coming here, no one can ignore the signature dish like beef wellington. My sister & I chose the following dishes: - Beef Wellington (main course) ~ $85 - Diane Steak (main course) ~ $83 - Crème Brûlée (dessert) ~ $18 - Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron Chambolle-Musigny 2020 (French red wine) ~ $286 one bottle - Cosme Palacio Rioja 2018 (Spanish red wine) ~ $52 one bottle Once you try the beefsteak here, you will understand why Gibbys is known as the best beefsteak restaurant in Montreal. The medium rare beefsteak at Gibbys is always perfect, the red meat is tender & juicy, melting in your mouth. Every dish is prepared with high-quality ingredients & beautifully presented, showing that Gibbys is a classy restaurant. Besides the excellent beefsteak, the sauces are equally delicious, but the most favorite is the Bordelaise sauce - a classic French sauce named after the Bordeaux region of France, famous for its wine. The sauce is made from dry red wine, bone marrow, butter, chives & demi-glace sauce. I chose the Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron 2020 (France) & my sister chose the Cosme Palacio Rioja 2018 (Spain). The 100% French pinot noir I chose was a typical Burgundy - it had rich, ripe fruit aromas, especially on the palate, with intense red berries, & earthy aromas such as forest floor, dried leaves & bay leaves. On the palate, the wine was ripe & sweet, quickly turning sour & the finish was a strong one with a certain structure. This Chambolle Musigny is very elegant, very pleasant on the palate with a strong, expressive finish - a great wine to accompany a meal at this stage. The Spanish Cosme Palacio is a good choice for the price, a delicate combination of blackberries, plums, crushed stone, concrete, wet earth & fresh mushrooms. It had a rich flavour - a complex finish that enveloped the palate. At Gibbys, this is the definition of a fine dining experience. Not only the luxurious space, quality dishes, Gibbys also affirms its class with professional service style. The plus point for Gibbys is the hospitality, enthusiastic & thoughtful service staff are always ready to advise customers on choosing dishes & choosing wine to go with. A perfect date night with my sister in yellow candles & melodious music, in addition, crème brûlée - a classic French dessert is the perfect ending to the meal. Price does not include 15% VAT & 25% tip. Total bill is over $750 for 2 people with 2 bottles of wine, a completely reasonable price. CA$377 / 1 person ~ 6.9 million VND (US$278)
This restaurants reputation for food, service & atmosphere is renown for a reason! What a great experience my group had at Gibby's. We were a group of 14 all served quickly & at the same time. Definitely coming back!
The service & food at Gibby's was nothing like ever before. Our server, Ivan, was simply amazing. I can't say enough about how delicious the food was. I'd come back to Montreal just for this restaurant.
We had such an amazing experience at Gibby's! If you are looking for somewhere to host your event look no further! Not only are they well organized & communicative during the planning process but they are incredible during the event! We received so many compliments from our guests & everyone loved their meals! The wait staff was friendly, patient & made us feel listened too all while serving us quickly with delicious food! Thank you Gibby's once again for making our wedding day perfect!
I cannot say enough how amazing our night was at Gibby's. From the excellent chowder, to the perfect lobster tail, the food exceeded expectations. The sorbet cleanser & little vacuum to keep your table clean, just the right touch. Luke, our waiter, went above & beyond to give us great service. Gibby's holds a special place in my heart, as I was here years ago with my son, so this memory tour was extra special.
