We came here for my boyfriend's birthday with high expectations but were disappointed. The night started with me asking a few questions about wines, which the waiter didn't seem to have much knowledge on, instead of asking someone else he specifically said the Riesling was a sweet wine & wouldn't pair with steak, however after a quick google search, the wine is a dry minerally wine, which I don't expect a server to know every wine, but I wouldn't recommend saying your not sure than giving false information.
He then went to ask the sommelier for a recommendation, but he didn't ask us what type of wine we were looking for, & came back to suggest a 130$ bottle, with the only reasoning that it was recommended. With no proper explanation of the wine I wouldn't purchase a 130$ bottle. Also if there is a sommelier, why are they not sent to the table to help pick a wine or recommendation?
Also when we came back with the recommendation, he brought the menu to my boyfriend even though I had been the ones asking the question??
For the steaks, the waiter asked if we wanted the steak spices on top or on the side, & the waiter wrote it down on his notepad, which my boyfriend asked for the spices on the side, yet we were served steaks with spices on them. (In my opinion it makes it worse if it written down & the mistake is made) . We decided not to say anything on the spot as the steak is still yummy & doesn't seem worth wasting a while piece of meat for a simple mistake.

In the reservation we had made a note that we were celebrating his birthday. At the end of the meal after asking for the bill, the waiter brought the bill & was about to get the card machine, & came back to say he heard it was a birthday, & said he would be right back. He brought out a cake which is presumably their policy, but he didn't ask us first, which yes it is nice but neither me or my boyfriend particularly wanted cake, so we ate some of it out of guilt of a whole cake brought out.
The steaks were good, also the German Riesling was a good dry white wine with steaks. The experience with the wine really tainted my experience, I know it is not a wine bar but at a restaurant where the bill is over 300$ you would hope to have a better service. At the end they take a picture on a Polaroid & give it to you which is cute.
With the whole experience I don't count myself coming back or recommending it to anyone either.

⭐ Food Review: Gibby's - Old Montreal

I pass by this restaurant during the day & never knew that this place has such a rich history within the community. Gibby's has that unmistakable Old Montreal charm -- stone walls, warm lighting, & a sense that dinner is meant to be an occasion. Our visit leaned into that spirit beautifully.

🍷 Wine - Tenuta Geretto 2021 (White Wine). The evening opened with a crisp, elegant pour of Tenuta Geretto 2021. It struck a lovely balance - bright acidity, subtle fruit, & just enough minerality to refresh the palate between bites. A clean, versatile white that paired surprisingly well with a hearty steak.

🥩 Main Course - Rib Eye Boneless Steak (Enough for Two). Gibby's is known for its classic steakhouse approach, & the rib eye delivered exactly that. Generously portioned - easily shared between two - it arrived perfectly cooked, with that signature Gibby's char on the outside & tender richness inside. The cut had great marbling, translating into deep, buttery flavor without feeling heavy. Sharing it made the experience feel indulgent without being overwhelming.

🍮 Dessert - Crème Brûlée. A classic ending done right. The sugar crust cracked with that satisfying tap, revealing a silky custard underneath. Not overly sweet, not overly dense - just a smooth, comforting finish to a rich meal.

🎯 Overall Impression
Gibby's remains a quintessential Old Montreal dining experience: generous portions, timeless dishes, & a setting that feels both historic & celebratory. The combination of a crisp Italian white, a shareable rib eye, & a well-executed crème brûlée made for a memorable evening that balanced indulgence with elegance.

Gibbys Restaurant is a Family Tradition every December 30th! We always enjoy the beautiful ambiance & great service! We recommend the Rib Eye Steak, Grilled Salmon, Platter of large Shrimp, Beef Wellington, Cornish Hen! The salads were delicious. A must try are Gibbys Monte Carlo potatoes! For dessert we all ordered the Chocolate Mousse, it was the perfect ending to our beautiful dinner!

Love the rustic, medieval feel of the place. Gives it a 10 out of 10 vibe. Great service, steaks were perfect & the lunch menu differs from the dinner menu but both are commendable.

We celebrated Christmas Eve at Gibbys, & it was absolutely wonderful. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt festive, cozy, & timeless-perfect for a special holiday dinner.

The food was outstanding. The Beef Wellington was beautifully cooked & rich in flavor, the lobster was fresh & perfectly prepared, & the ribeye was tender & full of depth. Every dish felt like it was made with care & respect for classic steakhouse tradition.

Service was attentive without being intrusive, which made the evening feel relaxed & celebratory. It was one of those meals where time slows down & you're fully present with the people you're dining with.

An unforgettable Christmas Eve dinner. We'll definitely be back for future celebrations.

I am very disappointed, I have been coming to Gibbys for 3+ years including my wedding anniversaries & the service & food was always impeccable. Today, it was a huge let down. The homemade bread was dry & the service was abysmal, they spilled water & basically thrusted down our plates in front of us when we had been polite & kind the entire time. The steak was very bland even with their special seasoning blend which is a far cry from their usual cuisine. We were so appalled we did not tip & just paid for our meal. We will give Gibbys one more chance in 2026 for our 4th anniversary but if the experience is the same, I will not be changing this review. Merry Christmas.

Our experience at Gibby's Steakhouse was exceptional, & a huge part of that was thanks to Linda, our waitress. From the moment we sat down, she made us feel genuinely welcomed & cared for. Her professionalism, warmth, & attention to detail were outstanding.

Linda knows the menu inside & out, her recommendations were spot-on, perfectly tailored to our tastes, & elevated an already incredible dining experience. She struck the perfect balance between being attentive & giving us space, anticipating our needs before we even had to ask. Every interaction felt effortless, friendly, & sincere.

In a restaurant known for its history & high standards, Linda truly stands out as someone who embodies what great service should be. She didn't just serve our meal, she made the night memorable. If you're dining at Gibby's, you are incredibly lucky if Linda is taking care of your table. She is a true asset to the restaurant & a big reason we'll be returning.

Nous étions un groupe de 8 personnes, & 5 d'entre-nous avons dû retourner nos assiettes parce que les pièces de viande étaient froides (pas tièdes, froides!). & une 6e personne a décidé de quand même garder son assiette... Au retour des assiettes une demie-heure plus tard, les pièces de viande pour deux d'entre-nous ont été recuites & sont revenues trop cuites & dures, & deux autres des assiettes des steaks saignants ont été confondues au niveau des épices (il y avait une allergie pour l'une des assiettes), ce qui fait que quatre des assiettes sont reparties!!! Comme les trois personnes qui ont initialement gardé leurs assiettes avaient à ce moment fini leurs plats, l'un d'entre-nous a simplement cancellé son assiette. Au retour des trois autres, une autre 20 minutes plus tard, nos saignants avaient une cuisson s'approchant du medium-saignant, & le medium était encore saignant & est encore reparti.... le retour fut plus rapide cette fois-ci, heureusement! Pour nos saignants nous avons gardé nos steaks tels quels (à tout le moins ils étaient chauds) pour finir par en finir, & nous étions affamés après tout ce temps. & au final, pratiquement personne autour de la table n'a mangé en même. Le restaurant a daigné nous offrir une bouteille de vin pour les huit personnes de la table, question de nous faire patienter le temps que nous recevions nos assiettes puisque nous avions tous eu le temps de vider nos bouteilles avec les entrées & l'attente, avant d'être finalement servis... & voyez-vous, c'est tout ce qui nous a été offert. Au prix des assiettes, on s'attend à ce que ce soit impeccable! & on s'attend à ce qu'on nous offre quelque chose sur nos facturations dans une telle situation. C'est inacceptable, plus jamais!

I had an exceptional dining experience at this steakhouse & can't recommend it enough! From start to finish, everything was top?notch.

Staff Highlights:
Mourad - Attentive, friendly, & always available when we needed anything. His professionalism made us feel truly welcome.
Yvon - Equally accommodating & courteous, Yvon ensured our dessert (Brazilian Coffee) ran smoothly & added a personal touch that set the tone for a wonderful evening.

Food: The dishes were absolutely delicious-each steak cooked to perfection, beautifully presented, & bursting with flavor. Every side & appetizer complemented the main courses wonderfully.

Overall, the combination of outstanding service from Mourad & Yvon, along with the superb cuisine, guarantees I'll be back soon. I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant to friends, family, & coworkers alike.

A Truly Exceptional Dining Experience at Gibbys, Montréal

If you're visiting Montréal & looking for a dining experience that blends elegance, flavor, & outstanding service, Gibbys at 298 Pl. d'Youville is an absolute must-visit. From start to finish, everything about our evening was crafted to perfection.

The moment we sat down, we were welcomed with their signature pickles simple yet vibrant, the perfect way to activate our palates for what was to come. The appetizers set the tone for the night: the French onion soup was rich & deeply flavorful, the wedge salad is very fresh, & the beef carpaccio was delicate, & seasoned beautifully. Just when we thought it couldn't get better, they surprised us with a lemon sorbet palate cleanser that was refreshing & light.

The main courses were the highlight. Our steaks were cooked with absolute precision tender, juicy, & full of flavor. The potatoes paired perfectly, making each bite feel balanced & satisfying. & the finale, the Gibbons Delight dessert, was exceptional. It reminded us of a smooth, velvety chocolate mousse & was the perfect way to end the meal.

The cocktail menu here is just as impressive as the cuisine. Each drink was crafted with intention & flavor. Favorites from the night included the Steakhouse Martini Gibbys, Obsidienne Silhouette, Fraise Limoncello Spritz, & Le Nectar, all delicious, refreshing, & beautifully presented.

A special thank you to Benna, our server, who truly elevated our experience. Friendly, attentive, & knowledgeable, she made the night even more memorable.

Overall, Gibbys delivered an unforgettable experience. The cuisine, the cocktails, the atmosphere, & the service all came together seamlessly. I definitely recommend visiting this spot when in Montréal, you won't be disappointed.

The définition of cozy. Went for lunch & had beef carpaccio + 12oz pepper steak. Food was excellent, perfect medium rare all the way through. The Gibby's Old Fashioned was delicious. On top of all of this, the service was impeccable.

I went to Gibbys over the weekend & cannot recommend this restaurant enough. Klaude was my server for the evening & was attentive, kind, & took the time to happily answer all of my questions. The night started with delicious, warm bread & pickles. The clam chowder is some of the best I've ever had with a healthy amount of clams in every bite. I had a Gibbys salad & loved the house dressing. My entree consisted of the large Filet Mignon, a broiled lobster tail, & Monte Carlo potato with asparagus. The steak was cooked to perfection & I have never had a twice baked potato so incredibly delicious. The broiled lobster tail was in a class of its own. The dining room has exposed wood beams & has a very intimate & historic feel to it. I cannot recommend this place enough & will make it a point to go back. A perfect place to treat yourself to an incredibly delicious meal that you will never forget. Thank you again, Klaude & crew!

A (now former) friend of mine tried to tell me that''The Keg' is just as good as Gibby's, if not better, so I asked him exactly what kind of drugs he's been smoking! VERY embarassing & SAD, Owen! I've had the crab cakes at Gibby's & I've had the crab cakes at'The Keg,' & let me tell you, it's not even remotely close! & that's without even mentioning the STEAKS!
Pre-appatizers: Before they even take your order they bring you pickles, bread, butter, bacon bits, etc -- now THAT is service! Everything in this category is excellent, be careful not to fill up on it.
Steaks: These are the best steaks in town, believe me! I recommend the wellington, 8oz tenderloin, & ribeye. Tremendous! Friend of mine had the rack of lamb & said it was wonderful.
Appateizers: Really recommend the burrata appatizer (served with fresh peaches, nice!), beef carpaccio, clam chowder, & the crab cakes. They bring you a green salad or wedge salad to start as well -- IMO these can be ommitted; good but not special. Once upon a time gaspacho was offered as well which was the BOMB! Unfortunately it's no longer part of the starter options which is regrettable indeed.
Fish/Chicken/Other Mistakes: If I wanted fish I'd go to a fish-house, not a steak-house. I mean, really? . . . anyways, the wife had the salmon or halibut or some non-steak item & really enjoyed it . . . she'll come around!
Sides: Monte Carlo Potato, sauteed mushrooms, whatever you like. Quality.
Dessert: Cheesecake with blueberry reduction . . . simply incredible! Ice cream . . . very nice! Chocolate Cake . . . elite!
Drinks: Many excellent wine choices. Whiskey Sour was no joke.
Prices: Very pricey IMO, special occasion type of spot. But, you know this going in & you certainly get what you pay for!
Overall: NO GIBBY'S SLANDER WILL BE TOLERATED! Gibby's is an institution in Montreal, & is somehow not universally hailed as the best place in town! Would love to see the gaspachpo make a return, but hey . . . whatcanyoudo?

Celebrated my birthday at Gibbys while in Montreal. Started with table bread, steak tartare & escargot. All delicious. Beef Wellington was one of the best I've had. Great service & ambiance as well. Highly recommended in you are in Old Montreal!
