I love this restaurant. I have been coming here for years & always include it in any trip to Montreal. The steak is fabulous, great seafood, apps, wine, drinks & desserts are first rate. Do not miss an opportunity to eat here.
Another fabulous meal at Gibby's had the Diane Steak & Shrimp cocktail both were excellent. They are making some changes it appears & in my view the best. They used to have a special cake just for birthdays that will be missed. The Monte Carlo potato does not seem quite as good but that may be me. Overall still excellent but feels like it has lost something special.
The one thing that is not diminished at all are the best in class servers. Warm, welcoming & professional They are the heart of the place & make it all special. Our server tonight Alexa was the best of them. We had a throughly enjoyable evening & a wonderful meal from appetizers to dessert.
Born & raised here just to make this clear for people that want to nag & complain & gossip stop your non sense to all the 3 & 4 star reviews nothing, nobody or & restaurant or business in general realistically can possibly be a perfect 5 out 5 & there 4.6 I feel is quite fair as they nearly 60 years old & well over 5000 reviews. I have seen 4.8 at best for certain restaurants that did not even deserve it my point to make this simple based on our day & age we are all human as well bottom line if any restaurant deserves a PERFECT 5 STAR REVIEW it's this ICONIC ESTABLISHMENT also to this day they have never ever changed exactly the same as 60 years ago. People today just look to criticize everything today just to nag like as if you have eaten better & especially bashing this place lol it does not get better of a overall steak house than this. They maybe overall best in NORTH AMERICA PERIOD I believe they are without a doubt hands down.
A few years ago, my friends took me to Montreal for my bachelor party, knowing a great steak dinner was exactly what I needed. The Gibbys cut was perfectly tender & packed with flavor, complemented by a smooth, well-paired wine. The company made the experience even more memorable. Amazing time at a classic steakhouse. Katherine, was everything you want in a server. Even asked for a'very chill' flambé service for dessert & she just crushed it. While also dealing with a very large group of diners who clearly were on something…poor thing! Anyways, steak was awesome. Cream spinach was a must, along with the cheesecake & flambé coffee to top off the evening. Highly recommend
I'm not usually a fan of inner city venues but this is an exception. My boss tried for a few years to get me to downtown Montreal CA. This time I went along & I absolutely loved it. Walk downtown Montreal & treat yourself to a steak dinner at Gibbys. Make sure you stop by all the art galleries!

It's easy to see how this restaurant has maintained its reputation for over 55 years. The steaks are done to absolute perfection-expertly cooked, flavorful, & exactly what you hope for when you sit down for a classic steakhouse meal.
A special mention to our waiter, Kashra, who was incredibly charming & attentive. He added a personal touch to the evening that made the experience even more enjoyable.

Dining at Gibbys is one of those classic Montreal experiences that really lives up to the hype. From the moment you walk into the historic stone building in Old Montreal, the atmosphere feels warm, elegant, & timeless. The rustic charm mixed with white tablecloth service sets the tone for a proper steakhouse night.
The highlight, without a doubt, was the steak. Cooked perfectly to temperature, it was tender, juicy, & packed with flavor. You can tell they use high-quality cuts & treat them with care-no unnecessary fuss, just a well-executed steak done right. Every bite was consistent & satisfying, exactly what you hope for when ordering at a place known for steak.
The sides complemented the meal nicely, & the service was attentive without being overbearing. It felt like the staff genuinely cared about the dining experience, which added to the overall enjoyment.
Gibbys strikes a great balance between upscale dining & comfort. It's the kind of place you go for a special occasion or when you simply want a guaranteed great meal. If you're in Montreal & craving a proper steak, this spot should be high on your list.
Gibby's is one of those places you've heard about forever, almost myth-like in reputation… long before you ever actually go. For me, it had been sitting in that category for years.
With my brother visiting (a true steak connoisseur), it finally felt like the right time. I booked a table for five on OpenTable a few weeks in advance for a 7:45 seating… no issues at all.
From the moment we arrived, the experience felt dialed in. We were seated right on time, service was immediate, & the evening flowed exactly the way you hope a place like Gibby's will deliver.
What I Liked:
Service was a standout. Attentive, engaged, but never hovering or interrupting. Drinks came quickly, orders were taken efficiently, & everything arrived with great timing.
A really nice touch to start the meal was the bread & pickles brought to the table. The bread was light, fluffy, & fresh with a great texture, & the pickles were a hit around the table… simple, but done right.
Food-wise, we leaned into what Gibby's is known for… steak.
• The rib steak was exactly what you want it to be: cooked perfectly, rich, & deeply satisfying.
• Wedge salad & Monte Carlo potatoes rounded things out well.
• Across the table, rib eyes, filet, clam chowder, carpaccio-most dishes fully met expectations.
Now… did I need a 20 oz rib steak? Absolutely not.
Did I regret it? Only later that night, when my stomach started filing complaints.
In the moment? Not a chance. Plate cleaned. No survivors.
A fun highlight was the Spanish coffee service, rolled out tableside with a bit of fire & flair. A small touch, but one that adds to the overall experience.
& oddly… even the bill stood out. Thick, high-quality paper. It sounds ridiculous, but it actually matched the overall feel of the place… attention to detail, even at the very end.
That said, one miss worth noting, my wife's peppercorn steak was significantly undercooked & came out rare instead of the medium she ordered, & she found it a bit tough. She didn't say anything at the time (not in her nature), & I'm confident they would have corrected it quickly had we raised it. Still, at this price point, you expect it to land right the first time.
Atmosphere & Vibe:
We were seated in the basement dining room (one of three levels). I joked it might be the'ugly people section,' but in reality it was the opposite, just a great mix of people.
Families, date nights, multi-generational celebrations, groups like ours… it felt lively but not overwhelming. You could actually have a conversation without shouting, which isn't always a given in a busy steakhouse.
The building itself adds a lot. Historic Old Montréal charm, heavy wood, warm lighting-it feels like a place with stories in the walls.
Closing:
Gibby's delivers exactly what its reputation promises: a classic, high-quality steakhouse experience done right.
It's not cheap, but it's not trying to be. This is a place for occasions. Celebrations. When you want to lean in a little & enjoy it.
Would I go every week? No.
Would I go again? Absolutely, when the moment calls for it.
A couple small notes:
• No mashed potatoes (surprisingly missed by a few at the table, especially for softer options)
• Not exactly vegetarian-friendly… but that shouldn't come as a shock
At the end of the day, Gibby's is about steak, tradition, & experience & it delivers on all three, even if not every plate lands perfectly.
This place never gets old. Well actually it gets older & older & thankfully doesn't change. A true landmark in Montreal, & one of the best steakhouses with the most amazing old world decor anywhere in Canada. Stone & brick walls, fireplaces, low ceilings, complete warmth & coziness.
The food never disappoints. Been coming here for nearly 40 years. I was fortunate to enjoy their new lunch menu, $55 for a 3 course meal with many options to choose from, 4 courses if you include the lemon sorbet pallet cleanser before the main course. Bread service & pickles are always included at no extra charge, as is the chocolate mints at the very end.
Gibby's simply has the best French onion soup anywhere. I was so excited when it came I forgot to take a picture, but trust me, beyond delicious, a must-have. The steak au poivre & rack of lamb are always great, & did not disappoint on this visit.
Besides the food, service is always friendly & professional making the whole experience complete perfection. Come here for business day or night or pleasure, best date spot; you will not be disappointed. Ever.
Went yesterday to celebrate our anniversary, the young lady that took us to our table was very nice & warm. Jason was our waiter & went above & beyond explaining the menu & checked on us constantly. For appetizers we had escargots & raw oysters (chuck norris from New Brunswick). The oysters were very fresh & delicious. As part of the table d'hote we also had Oyster Rockefeller - tasted very good as well. The Beef Wellington was amazing, I had the Pepper steak, which was seasoned perfectly; but, I recommend the Diane Steak that my daughter ordered. My son had Gibby's Prime burger (medium rare) & according to him it was juicy & flavorful. The Monte Carlo potato as a side is delicious. We will definitely go back. The food is well worth it but Jason's 5-star service made our dining experience a very memorable one.

Ne vous fiez pas aux autre avis sur leur salade, ces gens sont probablement des granos qui recherchent des salades santé avec des graines de citrouilles. Chez Gibbys, la salade est riche, avec bacon, & vinaigrette abondante. Les steaks sont parfaits, géants, & tendres, avec leur nouveau drizzle à l'huile d'olive, épices à steak & à l'ail, vu nul part ailleurs. Critiquer ce resto serait d'une stupidité incroyable, en plus du service de valet gratuit.
