About

Gibby's serves as a destination for prime cuts of beef and fresh seafood within a historic stone building defined by wood-burning fireplaces and dark wood accents. The menu focuses on dry-aged steaks that are trimmed on-site, alongside Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, and oysters harvested from cold waters. Traditional sides such as baked potatoes, pickles, and sourdough bread accompany the primary meat and fish courses. Patrons encounter a multi-room layout that maintains an atmosphere of seclusion and warmth through its thick stone walls and low ceilings. The culinary preparation emphasizes classic grilling techniques over open flames to achieve specific textures and flavor profiles. Every selection of seafood undergoes rigorous sourcing standards to ensure consistency across the entire menu. This establishment functions as a dedicated center for meat and aquatic offerings in a centralized urban environment.

Review Summary

Gibby's is widely regarded as a classic and historic steakhouse in Montreal, situated in a charming Old Port building that offers a unique and timeless atmosphere. Many guests praise the restaurant for its exceptional service, noting that staff members are consistently professional, attentive, and welcoming. The menu features standout items like the Beef Wellington, filet mignon, and the signature Gibby's salad, often accompanied by thoughtful touches like complimentary bread, pickles, and palate-cleansing sorbet. While many diners celebrate the restaurant as a go-to spot for birthdays and special occasions, others have noted inconsistencies in food quality, such as issues with steak preparation or declining portion sizes under new ownership. Despite occasional reports of high noise levels, crowded seating, and mixed reviews regarding value for money, the majority of visitors highlight the restaurant as an iconic destination that remains a cornerstone of the local dining scene.

The service is second to none. This steakhouse is pricy but you get your value. Everything starts with the house made pickles, bread, & fresh butter.you then move onto the generously large salad options. Prior to your main comes with a palette cleanser of lemon sorbet before. Each main is accompanied by roasted vegetables & a potato in your style. The dessert options are delicious & diverse.

I would always recommend the escargot!

Really nice spot for an authentic steak dinner. The ambiance & location are great, & the whole place has a classic old-school steakhouse feel. The steak plates are around $90 & are more than enough for one person, especially with the generous bowl of salad that comes with them. They did mix up my order & brought me a steak instead of the Wellington I had ordered, but they handled it very well & graciously added the Wellington at no extra charge. Excellent service & a memorable dining experience overall.

Absolutely the BEST steakhouse in all of Montreal! The Beef Wellington is everything people say it is... & more. Don't pass up the chance to get a Gibbys'Old Fashioned' - the surprise does not disappoint!
The 17th century dining room is worth visit alone - absolutely spectacular!
Caroline gave us the warmest, most gracious service we could have every imagined. She is truly a credit to this beloved restaurant. From the moment she came to our table, she made us feel like we'd come home!

?Gibbys is hands-down the best steakhouse I have ever been to. The setting in Old Montreal is incredibly cool-the building is actually an old converted horse stable, which gives it an amazing, historic atmosphere.
?The food was spectacular, but what truly blew us away was the service. Our server was absolutely phenomenal & clearly a seasoned pro. Their attention to detail, ability to anticipate our every need, & incredible memory when it came to managing the table & clearing dishes was top-tier.
?The staff went above & beyond to make our night special. We had to move our table slightly over, & due to that tiny inconvenience, they completely surprised us by treating us to sorbet with brandy. It was such a class-act move.
?Gibbys is an absolute must-visit if you are in Montreal. I will definitely be back!

Gibby's Steakhouse is a super cute restaurant that fits perfectly with the Old Montreal vibe. Service was welcoming & attentive throughout our meal.

My mom & I both ordered the fixed-price lunch menu. For appetizers, I had the beef tartare & she had the French onion soup, both were delicious, but portions were generous & we couldn't quite finish them since we wanted to save room for the rest of the meal. We were also served a lemon sorbet in between courses, which was a nice palate cleanser.

For entrées, I had the Diane steak & my mom had the Youville rack of lamb. Both were cooked perfectly to our tastes & were very flavorful. The only minor downside was that the vegetable portion felt quite small, just a few pieces of asparagus & a small pepper.

For dessert, we both had the chocolate cake of the day. It was a bit dry, but still enjoyable overall.

Overall, a very nice dining experience with great service & well-prepared food.

One of the best steakhouse in Montreal. With its location, parking is always an issue. Srrvice is impeccable. No child special menu, except for a small portion of pastas.

Unfortunately this old staple is tired & not what it used to be. The quality of the food & service do not match the cost. The steak was cold upon arrival, they took it back & re-heated it on the grill. For an $85.00 steak that's horrible. It was then burnt & chewy. The steakhouse martini didn't come with blue cheese olives, when I asked they said they would check, never addressed it after. The manager did come over to offer free dessert for one & comped the meal which is why I gave 2 stars instead of 1. The chicken & pepper steak were better quality & the lobster was good.

Amazing time at a classic steakhouse. Katherine, was everything you want in a server. Even asked for a'very chill' flambé service for dessert & she just crushed it. While also dealing with a very large group of diners who clearly were on something…poor thing! Anyways, steak was awesome. Cream spinach was a must, along with the cheesecake & flambé coffee to top off the evening. Highly recommend

Dining at Gibby's Steakhouse feels like stepping into history-in the best possible way. Housed in a beautiful 200-year-old building, the atmosphere alone sets it apart & gives the entire experience a timeless charm.

It's easy to see how this restaurant has maintained its reputation for over 55 years. The steaks are done to absolute perfection-expertly cooked, flavorful, & exactly what you hope for when you sit down for a classic steakhouse meal.

A special mention to our waiter, Kashra, who was incredibly charming & attentive. He added a personal touch to the evening that made the experience even more enjoyable.

Between the historic setting, exceptional food, & warm service, Gibby's delivers on every level. A true Montreal staple & well worth the visit.
