⭐ Food Review: Gibby's - Old Montreal
I pass by this restaurant during the day & never knew that this place has such a rich history within the community. Gibby's has that unmistakable Old Montreal charm -- stone walls, warm lighting, & a sense that dinner is meant to be an occasion. Our visit leaned into that spirit beautifully.
🍷 Wine - Tenuta Geretto 2021 (White Wine). The evening opened with a crisp, elegant pour of Tenuta Geretto 2021. It struck a lovely balance - bright acidity, subtle fruit, & just enough minerality to refresh the palate between bites. A clean, versatile white that paired surprisingly well with a hearty steak.
🥩 Main Course - Rib Eye Boneless Steak (Enough for Two). Gibby's is known for its classic steakhouse approach, & the rib eye delivered exactly that. Generously portioned - easily shared between two - it arrived perfectly cooked, with that signature Gibby's char on the outside & tender richness inside. The cut had great marbling, translating into deep, buttery flavor without feeling heavy. Sharing it made the experience feel indulgent without being overwhelming.
🍮 Dessert - Crème Brûlée. A classic ending done right. The sugar crust cracked with that satisfying tap, revealing a silky custard underneath. Not overly sweet, not overly dense - just a smooth, comforting finish to a rich meal.
🎯 Overall Impression
Gibby's remains a quintessential Old Montreal dining experience: generous portions, timeless dishes, & a setting that feels both historic & celebratory. The combination of a crisp Italian white, a shareable rib eye, & a well-executed crème brûlée made for a memorable evening that balanced indulgence with elegance.
We visited over the Christmas break as a group of six & had the most amazing time! The ambiance was incredible, so cozy & festive right before Christmas. Our waitress, Genevieve, was absolutely wonderful & took such great care of us. The food was outstanding, especially the escargots entrée, which was truly out of this world would recommend trying it. Genevieve also recommended fantastic wines that paired beautifully with our meal. Thank you so much for the warm hospitality & we will definitely be back!
Pricey but worth it for a great meal.
Wine list was over-priced but the rest seemed standard steak house pricing.
Food & service were excellent
A (now former) friend of mine tried to tell me that''The Keg' is just as good as Gibby's, if not better, so I asked him exactly what kind of drugs he's been smoking! VERY embarassing & SAD, Owen! I've had the crab cakes at Gibby's & I've had the crab cakes at'The Keg,' & let me tell you, it's not even remotely close! & that's without even mentioning the STEAKS!
Pre-appatizers: Before they even take your order they bring you pickles, bread, butter, bacon bits, etc -- now THAT is service! Everything in this category is excellent, be careful not to fill up on it.
Steaks: These are the best steaks in town, believe me! I recommend the wellington, 8oz tenderloin, & ribeye. Tremendous! Friend of mine had the rack of lamb & said it was wonderful.
Appateizers: Really recommend the burrata appatizer (served with fresh peaches, nice!), beef carpaccio, clam chowder, & the crab cakes. They bring you a green salad or wedge salad to start as well -- IMO these can be ommitted; good but not special. Once upon a time gaspacho was offered as well which was the BOMB! Unfortunately it's no longer part of the starter options which is regrettable indeed.
Fish/Chicken/Other Mistakes: If I wanted fish I'd go to a fish-house, not a steak-house. I mean, really? . . . anyways, the wife had the salmon or halibut or some non-steak item & really enjoyed it . . . she'll come around!
Sides: Monte Carlo Potato, sauteed mushrooms, whatever you like. Quality.
Dessert: Cheesecake with blueberry reduction . . . simply incredible! Ice cream . . . very nice! Chocolate Cake . . . elite!
Drinks: Many excellent wine choices. Whiskey Sour was no joke.
Prices: Very pricey IMO, special occasion type of spot. But, you know this going in & you certainly get what you pay for!
Overall: NO GIBBY'S SLANDER WILL BE TOLERATED! Gibby's is an institution in Montreal, & is somehow not universally hailed as the best place in town! Would love to see the gaspachpo make a return, but hey . . . whatcanyoudo?
super super super
sea bass with white wine combination was great! Service is so comfortable all the time.
vibe is like traditional & gorgeous.
While in Montreal on business. One of my coworkers from Calgary, who is originally from Montreal highly recommended we all go to Gibby's for dinner. It was a wonderful & absolutely wonderful experience. The restaurant was quite busy, which is apparently pretty common for this really popular restaurant. Initially they sat us in a lounge area upstairs, where we enjoyed a couple of appetizers & some drinks & were served by the most wonderful server imaginable. We all Loved her.
When we were finally brought downstairs to eat, we enjoyed an unbelievable dinner & some great wine selections. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are ever in Montreal. Not to be taken lightly. This is a high-end restaurant with high-end quality, food, & wines.
But the staff was over-the-top professional, & we loved every moment of it.

Excellent old school steakhouse. They were very busy & possibly a little understaffed but the service was still excellent. Steak was delicious & expertly prepared. Wedge salad among the best I've ever had. Only criticism would be the veggies included with the meal were very sparse. Great wine list with a few reasonably priced gems available. If you want the classic steakhouse experience this is it.
We are here on holiday & wanted a special occasion restaurant for the trip & our anniversary. We arrived a little early but no issue & we were given a table for two at the back next to one of the serving desks. Started with a great house martini & enormous pickles, bread etc. We both ordered shrimps & fillet mignon. Shrimps were lovely - sweet & juicy, although interesting that they were sourced from India rather than the Canadian variety. Mains were so so. We ordered our meat medium & they came with a nice bark on them but were definitely on the done side of medium. Wine was good although got the feeling that even though I was getting a good bottle, I was being pushed for something more expensive.
Being near the serving end of things we definitely got to see & hear a lot more than we would have liked, especially relating to the'management' of the more junior staff. Not professional. Other downer for me was that as we were finishing out dessert, our waiter summarily slapped the bill down on our table (we had not requested it & the restaurant was not full & we had not been slow). I expressed surprise & said I was hoping to have an Irish coffee, so the bill was withdrawn & service resumed.
Overall, a lovely setting, regular luxury steak house but I have had better for less.
Gibby's provided a mixed experience. A recent visit (July 2025) for a special occasion was unfortunately a major letdown when compared to our five-star experience back in 2022. That first visit set a high bar, making Gibby's our top choice for this special celebration. Unfortunately, our recent experience was exceptionally disappointing.
Disenchanting Seating & Ambiance
I'd specifically requested a private, intimate table in my online reservation, knowing it was a special occasion. Arriving early on a Monday evening, the restaurant was not busy, with plenty of quieter seating available. Despite this, the hostess seated us in a noisy section, surrounded by a lively group of businessmen & a family with young children. Our small table was also positioned uncomfortably close to another, making private conversation impossible. It was baffling why, given my request & the available space, we were placed in such an unsuitable spot.
Rushed & Questionable Service
Our server was polite but seemed rushed. When I mentioned our special occasion, he gave a cursory acknowledgment, in stark contrast to the genuine interest shown by our server back in 2022. It felt like our server on this occasion was focused on moving things along & maximizing the bill, constantly suggesting the most expensive items & add-ons.
The wine service was particularly concerning. I asked for a recommendation & was immediately pointed to the priciest options. I selected a different bottle, still pricey but more reasonable, which he confirmed. However, the bottle he brought had an unusual label, making it hard to identify. I accepted it, but later discovered on the bill that it was $50 more expensive than what I ordered. I didn't want to haggle on our special night, but it left me wondering if it was an honest mistake. He also acknowledged my request for a decanter but never brought it.
Underwhelming Food & Value
The food quality wasn't as good as our previous visit. Both steaks, ordered medium, arrived well-done. We chose not to send them back, simply wanting to conclude our disappointing evening. Unlike our 2022 visit, there were no complimentary desserts for our special occasion.
Ultimately, our bill was significantly higher than before, for a far less satisfying experience. The combination of the poor seating, rushed & seemingly up-selling service, & food issues meant our special occasion dinner felt unpleasant & overpriced.
Conclusion - Highly Disappointed
While Gibby's has a charming historic setting was very impressive back in 2022, my recent visit demonstrated a significant dip in quality & value. The best part of our July 2025 visit was recalling the wonderful experience we had two years prior. After this experience, & considering all the other great options in the area, I'm not sure if a third visit is likely.
Diane, our server was fabulous & very attentive to details. The food? Equally fabulous! I defy anyone to finish the Beef Wellington. It is that big a portion. Diane even suggested the wine that would go well with our meal. Great! No surprise that we return to Gibby's every time we're in Montreal.
We dropped in on a busy night without a reservation & got seated within 2 minutes. Then we met Tammy our server who made our night great. She had a good sense of humor & she helped us navigate the menu. The food was excellent & her suggestion for local red wine with our dinner was exceptional. Thank you Tammy for making a great dinner memorable.
❤?
Nice ambiance steakhouse near Old Town Montreal. It's an old converted horse stable. Very cozy with fireplaces. My steak dish was okay but not as impressive as I had expected. Very good wine list & attentive service.
Worth a stop.
Incredible service from our waiter vitali Would recommened to ask for him if you want someone who goes above & beyond & has incredible food & wine knowledge Thank you so much me & my girl loved your service
We went in for a steak last night. The place is beautiful. Wonderful location, beautiful building. White table cloth, lights lit up everywhere. We ordered a bottle of the 2021 Berone Chianti. (66$) She brought over a 2022 bottle & said that's all they had but it was the same price. Should have been lower then not the same. Right off the bat they're jurying you & giving you something of less value to charge the same. I own three wineries as she went off on it being the same. Not off to a good start. We ordered two 15oz rib steaks. They came with a salad, pickles & bread prior. Pickles, salad & bread were really good. The steaks were flavourless & pretty fatty. She pushed buying one of the sauces. IMHO you don't sauce a steak. Coarse salt is what's needed, not table salt. Most of the dinner was trying to upsell us, bottled water, steak sauce, apps, desserts. All in all, the keg is where I would stick. Nice to try these overpriced places once in a while but not at all needed & it was mediocre. Enjoy!
Had the opportunity to visit Gibby's during MTL á Table & tried the four course tasting menu. Everything was delicious, & the steak was cooked perfectly. Wine selection could be better but the South African Shiraz we ordered was really good.
Gibby's is expensive. The service was excellent(Nancy) the food was great. But the place is perhaps too casual for the price you pay. The wine list was shockingly simple, with wine prices at around 2.5X retail value - which is what you would expect from a good Steakhouse - but the choices were boring. Either they underestimate their clientèles tastes or I over-estimate what somebody spending 💰 expects from a wine list. For an above average steak & a night out Gibby's is a certainly great quality but not great value. The Keg is where I would go for a night out surrounded by people in jeans & T-shirts who aren't that into wine.
I loved the quality of everything!!! The pickles! The butter! The minced bacon (Although I don't like most of the bacon tastes in other places!)! The wine collection & above all the STEAK... The restoration of the old barn is very well done also! & thanks Alison for such a great service... Wish to be able to go back ASAP...😍😍😍
The quality of the food at Gibbys deserves to be among the best French restaurants in Canada. When coming here, no one can ignore the signature dish like beef wellington. My sister & I chose the following dishes: - Beef Wellington (main course) ~ $85 - Diane Steak (main course) ~ $83 - Crème Brûlée (dessert) ~ $18 - Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron Chambolle-Musigny 2020 (French red wine) ~ $286 one bottle - Cosme Palacio Rioja 2018 (Spanish red wine) ~ $52 one bottle Once you try the beefsteak here, you will understand why Gibbys is known as the best beefsteak restaurant in Montreal. The medium rare beefsteak at Gibbys is always perfect, the red meat is tender & juicy, melting in your mouth. Every dish is prepared with high-quality ingredients & beautifully presented, showing that Gibbys is a classy restaurant. Besides the excellent beefsteak, the sauces are equally delicious, but the most favorite is the Bordelaise sauce - a classic French sauce named after the Bordeaux region of France, famous for its wine. The sauce is made from dry red wine, bone marrow, butter, chives & demi-glace sauce. I chose the Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron 2020 (France) & my sister chose the Cosme Palacio Rioja 2018 (Spain). The 100% French pinot noir I chose was a typical Burgundy - it had rich, ripe fruit aromas, especially on the palate, with intense red berries, & earthy aromas such as forest floor, dried leaves & bay leaves. On the palate, the wine was ripe & sweet, quickly turning sour & the finish was a strong one with a certain structure. This Chambolle Musigny is very elegant, very pleasant on the palate with a strong, expressive finish - a great wine to accompany a meal at this stage. The Spanish Cosme Palacio is a good choice for the price, a delicate combination of blackberries, plums, crushed stone, concrete, wet earth & fresh mushrooms. It had a rich flavour - a complex finish that enveloped the palate. At Gibbys, this is the definition of a fine dining experience. Not only the luxurious space, quality dishes, Gibbys also affirms its class with professional service style. The plus point for Gibbys is the hospitality, enthusiastic & thoughtful service staff are always ready to advise customers on choosing dishes & choosing wine to go with. A perfect date night with my sister in yellow candles & melodious music, in addition, crème brûlée - a classic French dessert is the perfect ending to the meal. Price does not include 15% VAT & 25% tip. Total bill is over $750 for 2 people with 2 bottles of wine, a completely reasonable price. CA$377 / 1 person ~ 6.9 million VND (US$278)
What a wonderful location. Really good steak & potatoes. The rest is sub par. Waiter did not know the wine list. (3x SAQ prices!) Save half the bill & go to the Keg.
My first experience here. The ambiance was very pleasant. My waiter Alessandro was a nice & helpful person. The octopus was good but I have experienced much better at 40 westt. The rib steak was up to par & the side were simply delicious. How when I attend a restaurant at pay over 300$ for a couple , I would expect that any waiter pour the wine & water. At no time did anyone pour it. Very disappointed in the service. But I did tip myself for pouring it. Lol Whenever I attend a classy restaurant, the waiters usually share that responsibility. Another waiter saw me pouring the wine & never offered. Sad. That was my only negative experience. Hope the owner reads this post & corrects this because I really like this place.
