Monte Carlo potatoes, they used to be made with care & a were a beautiful sight, this time around they were unsightly, very unappetizing. Service was great. we will have to find a new venue for our birthday celebrations.
Only treats you well if you're white & old. Also doesn't do well with special occasions. Avoid if you want a meaningful dinner.
It was so sad because I could tell they were literally careless & kept me waiting almost an hour to be sat despite reserving online weeks in advance. I had a reservation for 16 for my BIRTHDAY. It was for 9:30 & upon arrival we were told that it would only be a 10m wait… why?'The table before us wasn't leaving' I had to go up to them multiple times & they'd ask me over & over'do you have a reservation??' Like ???
They ended up'seating us' at 10:15pm right when we had a second reservation at 11 (half our group ended up straight up refusing to have dinner at a place that made us wait so long)
We ended up leaving. Idk if the management is bad or if it was because we weren't Caucasian males so they thought we wouldn't spend money? Terrible.
Gibby's is our family's go-to place for birthdays, & it has truly become a tradition for us over the years. At this point, coming here feels like a family heirloom, it's the place where we celebrate our special moments together. The service is always impeccable, the steaks are consistently outstanding, & the overall experience is top-notch every single time. Everything about Gibby's feels elevated & memorable. If I could give more than five stars, I absolutely would.
We had a big birthday dinner. It was nice & fancy. One thing that disappointed me was there was only 1 chicken plate option.
I have been a patron of Gibbys my entire life. My family & I have been celebrating special occasions here for decades. My most recent experience last night was so disappointing, I felt I needed to leave a review. I was looking forward to a lovely evening for my mother's 75th birthday. I had ordered the beef wellington before & It was excellent. However this time around, the entire meal was mediocre at best & the service, terrible. Firstly, for one of the most expensive restaurants in the city, I was surprised to enter the front door to a very old smelling atmosphere. Like dirty carpets & old wood. I think some renovations are in order. The bathrooms are also dingy & old which is never a good indicator of cleanliness. My filet mignon which I ordered medium (a common cuisson) arrived rare on the inside. It was returned back to the kitchen & was reheated cut open & returned back to me well done & dry. It was sent back for a second time & when returned back was now blue. Even rarer than the first time. My mother who's birthday it was, ate her meal by herself. I did not want to return my meal back yet again for a third time. Most of the steak was left uneaten. We ordered dessert & coffee & finished our desserts by time the coffee arrived in a dirty cup with crusted on food that the waitress was scraping off in front of me with her nail. She seems annoyed when I asked for a clean cup, perhaps that was why I got water spilled all over me from her. Not even an apology. My mother was so upset that her birthday meal was ruined & her dinner companion (her daughter) sat & watched her eat, she cried. She felt she wanted to speak to the manager. My 75 year old mother has yet to be called back after leaving TWO messages. It seems that gibbys does not pride itself on the service & food quality it once did. I was sorry to hear the st sauver location closed down. I hope that is not an indication on what is to come for old montreal.
Resolution: Two bring this review up to date. Last weekend, Gibby's invited myself & my mother back for an all expenses paid dinner as an apology for the terrible experience. It was a lovely dinner. The food was good & the service was excellent by Nancy who was a doll.
I had previously visited gibbys & left a review, but am updating based off my new experience. I had a rather bad experience with the service over a month ago & the manager called me to have me explain the experience & offered me to come back & cover part of the meal due to the bad service the previous time. Even with the steak covered the bill was over $200 since we got wine & dessert.
This time the experience was much better. Me & my boyfriend were sat in the back of the restaurant where it is much calmer energy, & were served by Charlie she was great! She was able to help us recommend a good wine to pair with our steaks. Food was very good. I also had a Gibbys martini & I must say it is one of the best martinis I've ever had. For dessert we ordered the dame blanche, only slightly disappointed wad the chocolate sauce was already cold from the ice cream & had sunk to the bottom as a giant chocolate rock, but still good. We ordered espressos with dessert as well, I know gibbys is a fancy restaurant but 8$ before tax for a single espresso is a bit of a scam…
Overall very good experience especially after the previous visit, however we still did not see the elusive sommelier we had been promised to have sent to our table by the manager, but the waitress was extremely helpful!

We came here for my boyfriend's birthday with high expectations but were disappointed. The night started with me asking a few questions about wines, which the waiter didn't seem to have much knowledge on, instead of asking someone else he specifically said the Riesling was a sweet wine & wouldn't pair with steak, however after a quick google search, the wine is a dry minerally wine, which I don't expect a server to know every wine, but I wouldn't recommend saying your not sure than giving false information.
He then went to ask the sommelier for a recommendation, but he didn't ask us what type of wine we were looking for, & came back to suggest a 130$ bottle, with the only reasoning that it was recommended. With no proper explanation of the wine I wouldn't purchase a 130$ bottle. Also if there is a sommelier, why are they not sent to the table to help pick a wine or recommendation?
Also when we came back with the recommendation, he brought the menu to my boyfriend even though I had been the ones asking the question??
For the steaks, the waiter asked if we wanted the steak spices on top or on the side, & the waiter wrote it down on his notepad, which my boyfriend asked for the spices on the side, yet we were served steaks with spices on them. (In my opinion it makes it worse if it written down & the mistake is made) . We decided not to say anything on the spot as the steak is still yummy & doesn't seem worth wasting a while piece of meat for a simple mistake.
In the reservation we had made a note that we were celebrating his birthday. At the end of the meal after asking for the bill, the waiter brought the bill & was about to get the card machine, & came back to say he heard it was a birthday, & said he would be right back. He brought out a cake which is presumably their policy, but he didn't ask us first, which yes it is nice but neither me or my boyfriend particularly wanted cake, so we ate some of it out of guilt of a whole cake brought out.
The steaks were good, also the German Riesling was a good dry white wine with steaks. The experience with the wine really tainted my experience, I know it is not a wine bar but at a restaurant where the bill is over 300$ you would hope to have a better service. At the end they take a picture on a Polaroid & give it to you which is cute.
With the whole experience I don't count myself coming back or recommending it to anyone either.
This one hurts to write a little. We visited Gibbys tonight for the first time in two years, a long awaited return for us after we had our first child. We used to visit here to celebrate our birthdays & anniversary every year. We love the old building, the ambiance & old school vibes. But the vibes were different all around. After glancing at the menu I noticed it was same but also very different from before, I speculated they were bought in the time of our last visit & this holds true. The general vibes are the same but the service was not as great as we're accustomed to. Not sure if it's because we brought our child with us? Or because we are American? Our server was fantastic, & made us feel welcomed when she noticed we didn't feel that way… but service from coat check & the hosts was rather cold. We also made notes in the reservation that it was my husbands birthday & requested a high chair, but I guess those got lost somehow because they made kind of a big deal about getting us a high chair after they brought us to the table. The food…I know they're trying to keep it original but it was rather mediocre. Steaks were cooked great but any lacked seasoning, the salad was soggy & almost inedible. The Diane sauce tasted different. It just wasn't hitting the same. We also were not offered the classic Gibbys cake that we always have received in the past for special occasions & the polaroid Picture they used to take. We were looking forward to having a new one with our new addition. Also, how is there no changing table at all in this place? Wild. What was supposed to be a lovely celebratory evening & sharing the tradition with our young son. But we don't think we will be back after this.
We had a wonderful experience here! The food was delicious & the atmosphere was warm & romantic, perfect for celebrating a birthday as a couple. The complimentary birthday cake was beautiful & very tasty. A special thank you to Genevieve for being so attentive, kind, & friendly throughout our visit. We truly appreciated the thoughtful service & had a very happy celebration here.
The food, the ambiance, the staff, & the service were exceptional! Although it is on the expensive side, you get a good amount of great quality food for your money. They even brought us a peach cake to celebrate my birthday.
Kind of disappointed the servers knew it was my birthday (he wished me hbd) but we did not get a complimentary cake or Polaroid.
Meanwhile, the other table next to us was also celebrating a birthday & they got a complimentary cake & Polaroid. What's with this unfair & inconsistent service? If we were expected to pay for birthday treatment, that's fine. However, we were not informed at all.
If you decide to celebrate a special occasion here, do not expect it to be special. Very disappointing for a meal as expensive as this.
Great location & atmosphere, but the service did not match the price. I made a simple birthday request for my wife in advance & confirmed it with the hostess, but it was never done. Meanwhile, another table received birthday service. Very disappointing experience-I would not return or recommend.
An amazing experience & incredible food. The steak was perfect. It was my wife's birthday & they brought out maybe one of the best cakes we've had. You get so much for the money & a beautiful atmosphere.
Celebrated my birthday at Gibbys while in Montreal. Started with table bread, steak tartare & escargot. All delicious. Beef Wellington was one of the best I've had. Great service & ambiance as well. Highly recommended in you are in Old Montreal!
What happened to Gibbys?
My son chose Gibbys to celebrate his birthday with us (his parents) & his girlfriend. He was looking forward to an excellent steak, which in the past was a staple at Gibbys. Well, not any more! 3 out of 4 of us at the table ordered steak & we were very disappointed. The meat was very low quality (thin cuts, too much fat at the edges, & worst of all _very_ tough). This was at best Grade A beef.
My son ordered his steak rare as he has done elsewhere & did so with confidence given Gibbys past reputation. The steak was cold inside (not cool, cold!) & felt that it had just been taken out of the fridge (or the freezer) & quickly slapped onto the grill. My ribeye was like the bottom of a shoe, tough & with no flavor except for the spices. The meat had no marbling at all. My wife's steak was passable, but neither of the 3 steak lovers at our table finished their steaks, which _never_ happens in our family. The Monte Carlo potato was very good, thankfully.
We were left thinking how much better things are at The Keg, which is not even supposed to be in Gibbys' class.
The 4th guest had grilled salmon which looked good & tasted fine, no issues there. The'famous' Gibbys salad was ok, fresh ingredients, nice dressing, croutons & bacon bits all good.
We reserved through Opentable & had noted that it was for a birthday & asked for the cake & splarker, as well as the polaroid. On the eve of the reservation, we got a call from Gibbys to confirm our request, including the cake & sparkler. All good so far.
At the restaurant, at the end of the meal the waiter brings the cake. No sparkler. He said they ran out. What is the point of confirming then? Run out & get a bloody sparkler when you bother to confirm, that's what good service _is_. The cake was this tiny terrible dry cake, which was supposed to be dessert. It was such a turnoff that we didn't order real dessert, hurriedly paid the bill & made a note to write a review about our experience.
Our waiter was effective & polite, nothing over the top. The valet was excellent, polite, funny & efficient. He even took a picture of us at the entrance. We are all smiling as it is before the meal...
Our bill with tax & tip was over $750 ($761.95 to be precise, with tax & tip). Gibbys is not what it used to be & with so many excellent choices in Montreal we are never returning. Very disappointing.
Gibby's will always be the'go-to' place for anniversaries or birthday. A fancy place however reasonable prices.
Paid around $350 w tip
I got the Beef Carpaccio, half dozen Fresh Oysters, Beef Wellington, the 18oz Rib Eye steak plus a sparking water
Highly recommend the Monte Carlo version of the baked potato.
I recommend arriving 10-15mins earlier to find parking
The last of my favourite restaurants finally has fallen. Once my first choice for birthdays or any celebration but now I will definitely think twice before going back.
Service left a lot to be desired. Waitress seemed bothered anytime a request was made, making a big deal about having to'go down to the kitchen'. Pickles & bread took forever to arrive, along with taking our order. Sat nearly 30 minutes before we were served & another 20 before any food hit the table.
Food was good but not excellent. Prices have increased but the quality has gotten worse. Steak was not cooked correctly.
Overall not the experience I expect for $100+ a head. Very disappointed & I am sad to say that I will be looking elsewhere for a high quality dining experience.
Edit: Management responded to my concerns promptly, assured me that changes are going to be made at the restaurant & offered some compensation. Will see how my next experience is & update the review.
Edit 2: Went back tonight & my experience was much better, while there were still some issues with the kitchen they certainly made up for it. Service was much better & I would definitely return.
Such a classic. They servers are so… feeling nostalgic at the level of service that's not found anywhere else. They make it feel like you're their only guests.
Ok so here's the thing. It looks like expensive prices (steaks for example) but there's a lot that comes with it. The appetizers, either a salad or a wedge. Try the wedge!!!! It's a meal on its own but soooooo good. Never seen lettuce this size. Also on the table, bacon, pickles & bread as soon as you get there.
Steaks were awesome as you'd expect, perfect cooking & lots of choices of sides.
2nd time we come here for a birthday, if you say it ahead of time, you'll actually get a birthday cake.
Also fun to watch them do their show with alcoholic coffees & pouring with the flame.
Of course the restaurant is gorgeous & so classy.
Go there! Must visit if you're in Montreal, everyone knows this place !
Vitali took care of us tonight for my friend birthday, he made sure to explain in details everything that we needed to know about steaks even making great suggestion 🫡 real gentleman , we appreciated the food & the ambiance that allowed us to celebrate properly thank you mister Vitali
The service & atmosphere are stellar. I went for my birthday & got a complementary cake.
The food: I've had the filet mignon & beef wellington. They were both amazing, cooked to perfection & seasoned wondefully. The only complaint I have is the borderlaise sauce for the beef wellington was too sage-heavy, but the steak, duxelle, & puff pastry were so good sauce was not necessary. The iceberg salad is one of the best salads I ever had, & you can get extra bacon to your liking. The mocktails are sweet & flavorful. The fries were okay, not much seasoning but cooked perfectly.
Our server Klaude was great & I hope to get him as our server next time I go.
Went to Gibbys Monday April 14 for my partners birthday, amazing service from the second we stepped in. Got sat at Vitaly's Table he gave us the most amazing experience we could've asked for. Great man, great waiter, amazing service & we had an amazing night. I Recommend this location & vitally of course! 10/10. Food was amazing too by the way.
