I debated even writing this review, as I don't usually leave restaurant reviews-positive or negative.
I received a gift card to Gibby's for Christmas & was genuinely excited to return. The gift card was purchased over the phone & was ready for pickup at the time of our reservation, which went smoothly.
We were seated at a very tight table for two, with our chairs wedged between the backs of neighboring tables. While uncomfortable, we managed to settle in without disrupting other diners.
Shortly after, another couple was seated at the table beside us, requiring us to stand-with drinks in hand-to allow them access to their seats. Unfortunately, this became a recurring issue throughout the evening. Our server, Sebastian, repeatedly squeezed past us to pour water, take orders, & deliver food, frequently bumping into me without offering an apology.
The neighboring table eventually raised concerns about the lack of space & was reassigned, which once again required us to get up so they could exit. When salads, pickles, & bread arrived (all of which were very good), yet another table was seated nearby, & once again we had to interrupt our meal to let new diners through. Menus were passed over my head, & the repeated bumping continued. I was bumped well over a dozen times during the course of the meal without any acknowledgment.
For our mains, we ordered two Gibby's cuts cooked medium. They arrived medium rare. While not prepared as requested, the food was still enjoyable, & we chose not to send it back.
Overall, the food was solid. Unfortunately, the service left much to be desired.
When it came time to pay, I mentioned the gift card. Having served before, I had already calculated a 20% tip based on the full bill, not just the remaining balance after the gift card was applied. The gift card was processed, the remaining balance paid by debit, & the tip entered accordingly.
As I handed the payment machine back & said thank you, Sebastian tore off the receipt, tossed it onto the table, & walked away abruptly.
If a 20% tip is considered unsatisfactory, I would suggest checking in with guests shortly after their mains arrive, minimizing physical disruptions throughout the meal, & offering a simple'excuse me' or'sorry' when repeatedly bumping into diners.
Regardless of the tip amount, acknowledging & thanking guests is just good manners & what I would think is expected when you are representing a business.
While the food was good, Montreal has many excellent restaurants. At Gibby's price point, the overall experience matters just as much as the food-& unfortunately, this experience didn't feel worth it. I'm glad this was a gift card, & I'll be choosing a different restaurant to recommend or gift in the future.
⭐ Food Review: Gibby's - Old Montreal
I pass by this restaurant during the day & never knew that this place has such a rich history within the community. Gibby's has that unmistakable Old Montreal charm -- stone walls, warm lighting, & a sense that dinner is meant to be an occasion. Our visit leaned into that spirit beautifully.
🍷 Wine - Tenuta Geretto 2021 (White Wine). The evening opened with a crisp, elegant pour of Tenuta Geretto 2021. It struck a lovely balance - bright acidity, subtle fruit, & just enough minerality to refresh the palate between bites. A clean, versatile white that paired surprisingly well with a hearty steak.
🥩 Main Course - Rib Eye Boneless Steak (Enough for Two). Gibby's is known for its classic steakhouse approach, & the rib eye delivered exactly that. Generously portioned - easily shared between two - it arrived perfectly cooked, with that signature Gibby's char on the outside & tender richness inside. The cut had great marbling, translating into deep, buttery flavor without feeling heavy. Sharing it made the experience feel indulgent without being overwhelming.
🍮 Dessert - Crème Brûlée. A classic ending done right. The sugar crust cracked with that satisfying tap, revealing a silky custard underneath. Not overly sweet, not overly dense - just a smooth, comforting finish to a rich meal.

Gibby's remains a quintessential Old Montreal dining experience: generous portions, timeless dishes, & a setting that feels both historic & celebratory. The combination of a crisp Italian white, a shareable rib eye, & a well-executed crème brûlée made for a memorable evening that balanced indulgence with elegance.
My first time at Gibbys. Just wow! We went there before the Paul McCartney concert in November. The food & atmosphere were amazing. But the best part of our evening was the service. Our server Linda truly made it a memorable experience. Will definitely be back soon!
We had a wonderful time & truly enjoyed our experience at Gibbys. The food was excellent from start to finish, & Genevieve, our waitress, was fantastic very friendly, attentive, & made the evening even better! We highly recommend the Oyster Rockefeller, & you can't go wrong with the filet mignon or the beef Wellington.
Un des endroits les plus emblématiques du Vieux-Port de Montréal. Dès qu'on entre chez Gibbys, on sent qu'on traverse le temps : l'endroit est logé dans un bâtiment d'époque avec ses murs en pierre & son ambiance chaleureuse de taverne élégante. On y retrouve une atmosphère feutrée, idéale pour un souper en couple, en famille ou même un moment spécial entre amis.
Nous avons choisi une petite salade croquante en entrée, joliment dressée avec bacon croustillant, sauce onctueuse & tomates cerises fraîches. Ensuite, un demi-poulet rôti, bien doré & juteux, servi avec des légumes grillés & pommes de terre rôties, accompagné d'une délicieuse sauce maison bien chaude. Le tout était parfaitement équilibré.
En bonus, une petite boule de sorbet rafraîchissante a été servie entre les plats. J'ai aussi goûté un bloody caesar, bien relevé & joliment présenté.
Le service était attentionné, discret, très professionnel. La salle, avec ses nappes blanches, ses chandelles & sa lumière tamisée, offrait une ambiance parfaite.
Une adresse mythique, à visiter au moins une fois si vous êtes de passage à Montréal - ou à redécouvrir si vous êtes d'ici.
🍽? Une belle cuisine, un cadre historique & une atmosphère authentique : Gibbys reste une valeur sûre du Vieux-Montréal.
Gibbys Restaurant is a Family Tradition every December 30th! We always enjoy the beautiful ambiance & great service! We recommend the Rib Eye Steak, Grilled Salmon, Platter of large Shrimp, Beef Wellington, Cornish Hen! The salads were delicious. A must try are Gibbys Monte Carlo potatoes! For dessert we all ordered the Chocolate Mousse, it was the perfect ending to our beautiful dinner!
We celebrated Christmas Eve at Gibbys, & it was absolutely wonderful. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt festive, cozy, & timeless-perfect for a special holiday dinner.
The food was outstanding. The Beef Wellington was beautifully cooked & rich in flavor, the lobster was fresh & perfectly prepared, & the ribeye was tender & full of depth. Every dish felt like it was made with care & respect for classic steakhouse tradition.
Service was attentive without being intrusive, which made the evening feel relaxed & celebratory. It was one of those meals where time slows down & you're fully present with the people you're dining with.
An unforgettable Christmas Eve dinner. We'll definitely be back for future celebrations.
I am very disappointed, I have been coming to Gibbys for 3+ years including my wedding anniversaries & the service & food was always impeccable. Today, it was a huge let down. The homemade bread was dry & the service was abysmal, they spilled water & basically thrusted down our plates in front of us when we had been polite & kind the entire time. The steak was very bland even with their special seasoning blend which is a far cry from their usual cuisine. We were so appalled we did not tip & just paid for our meal. We will give Gibbys one more chance in 2026 for our 4th anniversary but if the experience is the same, I will not be changing this review. Merry Christmas.

Our experience at Gibby's Steakhouse was exceptional, & a huge part of that was thanks to Linda, our waitress. From the moment we sat down, she made us feel genuinely welcomed & cared for. Her professionalism, warmth, & attention to detail were outstanding.
Linda knows the menu inside & out, her recommendations were spot-on, perfectly tailored to our tastes, & elevated an already incredible dining experience. She struck the perfect balance between being attentive & giving us space, anticipating our needs before we even had to ask. Every interaction felt effortless, friendly, & sincere.
In a restaurant known for its history & high standards, Linda truly stands out as someone who embodies what great service should be. She didn't just serve our meal, she made the night memorable. If you're dining at Gibby's, you are incredibly lucky if Linda is taking care of your table. She is a true asset to the restaurant & a big reason we'll be returning.
Gibby's is one of the best places I've ever eaten at. Been there several times over many years. Never had a bad meal or bad service. Highly recommend.
A Truly Exceptional Dining Experience at Gibbys, Montréal
If you're visiting Montréal & looking for a dining experience that blends elegance, flavor, & outstanding service, Gibbys at 298 Pl. d'Youville is an absolute must-visit. From start to finish, everything about our evening was crafted to perfection.
The moment we sat down, we were welcomed with their signature pickles simple yet vibrant, the perfect way to activate our palates for what was to come. The appetizers set the tone for the night: the French onion soup was rich & deeply flavorful, the wedge salad is very fresh, & the beef carpaccio was delicate, & seasoned beautifully. Just when we thought it couldn't get better, they surprised us with a lemon sorbet palate cleanser that was refreshing & light.
The main courses were the highlight. Our steaks were cooked with absolute precision tender, juicy, & full of flavor. The potatoes paired perfectly, making each bite feel balanced & satisfying. & the finale, the Gibbons Delight dessert, was exceptional. It reminded us of a smooth, velvety chocolate mousse & was the perfect way to end the meal.
The cocktail menu here is just as impressive as the cuisine. Each drink was crafted with intention & flavor. Favorites from the night included the Steakhouse Martini Gibbys, Obsidienne Silhouette, Fraise Limoncello Spritz, & Le Nectar, all delicious, refreshing, & beautifully presented.
A special thank you to Benna, our server, who truly elevated our experience. Friendly, attentive, & knowledgeable, she made the night even more memorable.
Overall, Gibbys delivered an unforgettable experience. The cuisine, the cocktails, the atmosphere, & the service all came together seamlessly. I definitely recommend visiting this spot when in Montréal, you won't be disappointed.
Beau décor d'ambiance reflétant le Vieux Montréal resto autrefois utilisé pour les écuries D'Youville, un atmosphère règne quand vous pénétrez à l'intérieur.
Un service de valet est offert à la clientèle. Les plats au menu sont dispendieux on y va pour célébrer un événement , carte des vins à prix quand même raisonnable.
Le clou de notre visite… le service de « Linda H.» efficace,connaît bien son menu nous fait des suggestions appropriées autant pour les plats que les vins, aucunement bousculés
Gibbys doit réaliser que Linda est une perle pour l'établissement

Svp les nouveaux propriétaires méfiez vous des changements. On ne change pas une recette gagnante simplement pour être mercantile à la longue vous risquez d'être perdants
Very good , 1st time at Gibby's & I'll return soon. Wear a sweater very cold. Asked the manager to pls turn up the heat. He replied, wait till more people show up & it will be warmer. Not impressed , & yes the restaurant got full & it was still cold. My girlfriend keeped her coat on till we left.
The définition of cozy. Went for lunch & had beef carpaccio + 12oz pepper steak. Food was excellent, perfect medium rare all the way through. The Gibby's Old Fashioned was delicious. On top of all of this, the service was impeccable.
I went to Gibbys over the weekend & cannot recommend this restaurant enough. Klaude was my server for the evening & was attentive, kind, & took the time to happily answer all of my questions. The night started with delicious, warm bread & pickles. The clam chowder is some of the best I've ever had with a healthy amount of clams in every bite. I had a Gibbys salad & loved the house dressing. My entree consisted of the large Filet Mignon, a broiled lobster tail, & Monte Carlo potato with asparagus. The steak was cooked to perfection & I have never had a twice baked potato so incredibly delicious. The broiled lobster tail was in a class of its own. The dining room has exposed wood beams & has a very intimate & historic feel to it. I cannot recommend this place enough & will make it a point to go back. A perfect place to treat yourself to an incredibly delicious meal that you will never forget. Thank you again, Klaude & crew!
Benaf was amazing. We have been to Gibby's a hundred times. Always great. This lady made it even more special.
Wonderful meal at Gibby's this evening. It has been years since I was last there & I was happy to learn that the food, service & atmosphere were still at the same impeccable level as I remembered it. The Beef Wellington was superb as were the Cornish Game Hens. Our server Adib was nothing short of splendid. Cannot recommend Gibby's enough!
A (now former) friend of mine tried to tell me that''The Keg' is just as good as Gibby's, if not better, so I asked him exactly what kind of drugs he's been smoking! VERY embarassing & SAD, Owen! I've had the crab cakes at Gibby's & I've had the crab cakes at'The Keg,' & let me tell you, it's not even remotely close! & that's without even mentioning the STEAKS!
Pre-appatizers: Before they even take your order they bring you pickles, bread, butter, bacon bits, etc -- now THAT is service! Everything in this category is excellent, be careful not to fill up on it.
Steaks: These are the best steaks in town, believe me! I recommend the wellington, 8oz tenderloin, & ribeye. Tremendous! Friend of mine had the rack of lamb & said it was wonderful.
Appateizers: Really recommend the burrata appatizer (served with fresh peaches, nice!), beef carpaccio, clam chowder, & the crab cakes. They bring you a green salad or wedge salad to start as well -- IMO these can be ommitted; good but not special. Once upon a time gaspacho was offered as well which was the BOMB! Unfortunately it's no longer part of the starter options which is regrettable indeed.
Fish/Chicken/Other Mistakes: If I wanted fish I'd go to a fish-house, not a steak-house. I mean, really? . . . anyways, the wife had the salmon or halibut or some non-steak item & really enjoyed it . . . she'll come around!
Sides: Monte Carlo Potato, sauteed mushrooms, whatever you like. Quality.
Dessert: Cheesecake with blueberry reduction . . . simply incredible! Ice cream . . . very nice! Chocolate Cake . . . elite!
Drinks: Many excellent wine choices. Whiskey Sour was no joke.
Prices: Very pricey IMO, special occasion type of spot. But, you know this going in & you certainly get what you pay for!
Overall: NO GIBBY'S SLANDER WILL BE TOLERATED! Gibby's is an institution in Montreal, & is somehow not universally hailed as the best place in town! Would love to see the gaspachpo make a return, but hey . . . whatcanyoudo?
We had such an amazing time at Gibbys! Our waiter Adib M gave us the best experience. He explained everything on the menu & was very knowledgeable on the items. He told us the history of the building & was everything a good waiter should be ! 10/10 would recommend!!!
