Gibbys used to feel like such a safe haven - a true institution known for comfort food & consistency. While we appreciated seeing some younger, fresh faces on staff & noticed a few updates, we were genuinely surprised to find that - other than hen - there is no chicken dish on the menu. Really? Did no one notice?
They used to serve a lovely Chicken Kiev, which many of us remember fondly. I mentioned this concern to reception twice before, but unfortunately felt dismissed.
It's disappointing. Gibby would surely turn over in his grave, & Claudia would not be pleased. I suppose all good things eventually come to an end - but we had hoped Gibbys would remain one of the exceptions.
This is a review about redemption. My wife & I & friends visited Gibby's in January & it
was not what we had hoped it would be. There were issues with one of the steaks & the service was mediocre. I posted a detailed review & I was very pleasantly surprised when I was contacted by Fatima Roman, the floor manager. She offered us the option of returning & having the restaurant comp our main courses. I have always maintained that the mark of an excellent organization is not that they never fail, rather what they do when they fail to meet their standards.
Well, we returned last night & we were treated like royalty by Fatima & the Director General, Jose Lourenco. The service & food lived up to & exceeded our expectations. & our cocktails & a dessert were comped as well. The restaurant more than redeemed itself & we will continue to patronize it, as we have for decades.
I had previously visited gibbys & left a review, but am updating based off my new experience. I had a rather bad experience with the service over a month ago & the manager called me to have me explain the experience & offered me to come back & cover part of the meal due to the bad service the previous time. Even with the steak covered the bill was over $200 since we got wine & dessert.
This time the experience was much better. Me & my boyfriend were sat in the back of the restaurant where it is much calmer energy, & were served by Charlie she was great! She was able to help us recommend a good wine to pair with our steaks. Food was very good. I also had a Gibbys martini & I must say it is one of the best martinis I've ever had. For dessert we ordered the dame blanche, only slightly disappointed wad the chocolate sauce was already cold from the ice cream & had sunk to the bottom as a giant chocolate rock, but still good. We ordered espressos with dessert as well, I know gibbys is a fancy restaurant but 8$ before tax for a single espresso is a bit of a scam…
Overall very good experience especially after the previous visit, however we still did not see the elusive sommelier we had been promised to have sent to our table by the manager, but the waitress was extremely helpful!

We came here for my boyfriend's birthday with high expectations but were disappointed. The night started with me asking a few questions about wines, which the waiter didn't seem to have much knowledge on, instead of asking someone else he specifically said the Riesling was a sweet wine & wouldn't pair with steak, however after a quick google search, the wine is a dry minerally wine, which I don't expect a server to know every wine, but I wouldn't recommend saying your not sure than giving false information.
He then went to ask the sommelier for a recommendation, but he didn't ask us what type of wine we were looking for, & came back to suggest a 130$ bottle, with the only reasoning that it was recommended. With no proper explanation of the wine I wouldn't purchase a 130$ bottle. Also if there is a sommelier, why are they not sent to the table to help pick a wine or recommendation?
Also when we came back with the recommendation, he brought the menu to my boyfriend even though I had been the ones asking the question??
For the steaks, the waiter asked if we wanted the steak spices on top or on the side, & the waiter wrote it down on his notepad, which my boyfriend asked for the spices on the side, yet we were served steaks with spices on them. (In my opinion it makes it worse if it written down & the mistake is made) . We decided not to say anything on the spot as the steak is still yummy & doesn't seem worth wasting a while piece of meat for a simple mistake.
In the reservation we had made a note that we were celebrating his birthday. At the end of the meal after asking for the bill, the waiter brought the bill & was about to get the card machine, & came back to say he heard it was a birthday, & said he would be right back. He brought out a cake which is presumably their policy, but he didn't ask us first, which yes it is nice but neither me or my boyfriend particularly wanted cake, so we ate some of it out of guilt of a whole cake brought out.
The steaks were good, also the German Riesling was a good dry white wine with steaks. The experience with the wine really tainted my experience, I know it is not a wine bar but at a restaurant where the bill is over 300$ you would hope to have a better service. At the end they take a picture on a Polaroid & give it to you which is cute.
With the whole experience I don't count myself coming back or recommending it to anyone either.
Gibby's is by far one of the best restaurants we have ever been to. From the amazing architecture to the romantic atmosphere. Our Server, Justin, provided attentive & personal service, ensuring that our entire experience was the best it could possibly be. In addition to the best steak we have ever had, the Old Fashioned was tough to beat. While the cost was high, we truly got what we paid for & would do it again. This is a must for anyone in Montreal.
Gibbys, just one word & I will say it in my mother tongue, French: Magistral! World class service, superb food, & you know, when you do a classic like Escargots à la Bourguignonne way better than most of your peers (especially way better than those who are supposed to deliver the best version of that), & that is your case, all I can say is'Salut l'artiste!'. Impressed I was! & not to forget the tableside Brazilian coffee: I am sure you already know that, but this is a first in Montreal. & that was also very very world class. You will win many hearts with that one (not that you are not already winning hearts. Of course you do: your dining rooms were packed to the brim when I was there!).
Very disappointed with my recent experience at Gibbys.
I made a reservation for 8:00 PM & arrived exactly on time, yet I was still asked to wait in line. If guests respect your schedule & show up as requested, their time should be respected as well. To make matters worse, I left my name & number for a manager to follow up, & never received a call.
Gibbys used to feel like a special place to go out, with a certain standard & atmosphere. Now it seems that standard has slipped, with people being admitted in very casual attire like sweatpants. Whatever happened to maintaining a dress code & the experience that made this restaurant stand out?
Honestly, what a shame.
If you're looking for a classic, upscale steakhouse experience in Old Montreal, Gibbys absolutely delivers.
From the moment you step inside, the historic stone walls & warm lighting create an elegant, intimate atmosphere that feels timeless. It's the kind of place that's perfect for anniversaries, client dinners, or a refined night out.
The food is outstanding. The steaks are cooked perfectly to temperature - tender, flavorful, & expertly seasoned. The lobster is fresh & beautifully presented, & the sides are generous & satisfying. Everything feels thoughtfully prepared & high quality.
Service is another highlight. The staff are professional, attentive, & knowledgeable without being intrusive. They guide you through the menu & wine list with confidence, making the whole evening feel seamless.
Yes, it's on the premium side price-wise, but the quality, ambiance, & consistency make it worth it. Gibbys is a true Montreal classic - & for good reason.
Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates a traditional steakhouse done right.
This was our third visit to Gibbys in just over two months & it was incredible again. Sarah & Claude were amazing. Sarah was our waitress two weeks ago too, & we were so happy to see her again. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly medium rare & my girlfriend's sea bass was delicious. We had French onion soup to start & a spicy margarita in a martini glass, which was so good. We cannot wait to come back.
This one hurts to write a little. We visited Gibbys tonight for the first time in two years, a long awaited return for us after we had our first child. We used to visit here to celebrate our birthdays & anniversary every year. We love the old building, the ambiance & old school vibes. But the vibes were different all around. After glancing at the menu I noticed it was same but also very different from before, I speculated they were bought in the time of our last visit & this holds true. The general vibes are the same but the service was not as great as we're accustomed to. Not sure if it's because we brought our child with us? Or because we are American? Our server was fantastic, & made us feel welcomed when she noticed we didn't feel that way… but service from coat check & the hosts was rather cold. We also made notes in the reservation that it was my husbands birthday & requested a high chair, but I guess those got lost somehow because they made kind of a big deal about getting us a high chair after they brought us to the table. The food…I know they're trying to keep it original but it was rather mediocre. Steaks were cooked great but any lacked seasoning, the salad was soggy & almost inedible. The Diane sauce tasted different. It just wasn't hitting the same. We also were not offered the classic Gibbys cake that we always have received in the past for special occasions & the polaroid Picture they used to take. We were looking forward to having a new one with our new addition. Also, how is there no changing table at all in this place? Wild. What was supposed to be a lovely celebratory evening & sharing the tradition with our young son. But we don't think we will be back after this.
Had a great meal at Gibbys.
The steak was perfectly cooked, juicy, & full of flavor.
Classic steakhouse vibe, cozy atmosphere, & friendly service.
A solid spot in Old Montreal when you're craving a good steak.
When I go to gibby's I eat like a king & i'm treated like one too… I'll always return
Our server, Catherine, provided us with a wonderful experience! She was so much fun & had so much enthusiasm & knowledge. She clearly cares about what she does & I hope management recognizes how hard working & skilled she is! Everything we ate was delicious. We enjoyed the beef tartare appetizer & beef Wellington for dinner. The meal was perfectly paced. The dessert drink, named the Brazil, was so much fun & delicious. They flambé the drink at the table, giving you a great show. Thank you, Gibby's, for the amazing memories!
I debated even writing this review, as I don't usually leave restaurant reviews-positive or negative.
I received a gift card to Gibby's for Christmas & was genuinely excited to return. The gift card was purchased over the phone & was ready for pickup at the time of our reservation, which went smoothly.
We were seated at a very tight table for two, with our chairs wedged between the backs of neighboring tables. While uncomfortable, we managed to settle in without disrupting other diners.
Shortly after, another couple was seated at the table beside us, requiring us to stand-with drinks in hand-to allow them access to their seats. Unfortunately, this became a recurring issue throughout the evening. Our server, Sebastian, repeatedly squeezed past us to pour water, take orders, & deliver food, frequently bumping into me without offering an apology.
The neighboring table eventually raised concerns about the lack of space & was reassigned, which once again required us to get up so they could exit. When salads, pickles, & bread arrived (all of which were very good), yet another table was seated nearby, & once again we had to interrupt our meal to let new diners through. Menus were passed over my head, & the repeated bumping continued. I was bumped well over a dozen times during the course of the meal without any acknowledgment.
For our mains, we ordered two Gibby's cuts cooked medium. They arrived medium rare. While not prepared as requested, the food was still enjoyable, & we chose not to send it back.
Overall, the food was solid. Unfortunately, the service left much to be desired.
When it came time to pay, I mentioned the gift card. Having served before, I had already calculated a 20% tip based on the full bill, not just the remaining balance after the gift card was applied. The gift card was processed, the remaining balance paid by debit, & the tip entered accordingly.
As I handed the payment machine back & said thank you, Sebastian tore off the receipt, tossed it onto the table, & walked away abruptly.
If a 20% tip is considered unsatisfactory, I would suggest checking in with guests shortly after their mains arrive, minimizing physical disruptions throughout the meal, & offering a simple'excuse me' or'sorry' when repeatedly bumping into diners.
Regardless of the tip amount, acknowledging & thanking guests is just good manners & what I would think is expected when you are representing a business.
While the food was good, Montreal has many excellent restaurants. At Gibby's price point, the overall experience matters just as much as the food-& unfortunately, this experience didn't feel worth it. I'm glad this was a gift card, & I'll be choosing a different restaurant to recommend or gift in the future.
Gibbys is an amazing establishment with absolutely unforgettable food, service, ambience, & very cool history. I'm not sure if Kas still works there, but he was our server & literally was my favorite person I met in Montreal for our long weekend getaway. We were there a YEAR ago & I haven't forgotten about Gibbys & Kas! Everything we had was perfect delicious. We will definitely return next time we're in Montreal! Photos shared too!
⭐ Food Review: Gibby's - Old Montreal
I pass by this restaurant during the day & never knew that this place has such a rich history within the community. Gibby's has that unmistakable Old Montreal charm -- stone walls, warm lighting, & a sense that dinner is meant to be an occasion. Our visit leaned into that spirit beautifully.
🍷 Wine - Tenuta Geretto 2021 (White Wine). The evening opened with a crisp, elegant pour of Tenuta Geretto 2021. It struck a lovely balance - bright acidity, subtle fruit, & just enough minerality to refresh the palate between bites. A clean, versatile white that paired surprisingly well with a hearty steak.
🥩 Main Course - Rib Eye Boneless Steak (Enough for Two). Gibby's is known for its classic steakhouse approach, & the rib eye delivered exactly that. Generously portioned - easily shared between two - it arrived perfectly cooked, with that signature Gibby's char on the outside & tender richness inside. The cut had great marbling, translating into deep, buttery flavor without feeling heavy. Sharing it made the experience feel indulgent without being overwhelming.
🍮 Dessert - Crème Brûlée. A classic ending done right. The sugar crust cracked with that satisfying tap, revealing a silky custard underneath. Not overly sweet, not overly dense - just a smooth, comforting finish to a rich meal.
🎯 Overall Impression
Gibby's remains a quintessential Old Montreal dining experience: generous portions, timeless dishes, & a setting that feels both historic & celebratory. The combination of a crisp Italian white, a shareable rib eye, & a well-executed crème brûlée made for a memorable evening that balanced indulgence with elegance.
My first time at Gibbys. Just wow! We went there before the Paul McCartney concert in November. The food & atmosphere were amazing. But the best part of our evening was the service. Our server Linda truly made it a memorable experience. Will definitely be back soon!
We had a wonderful time & truly enjoyed our experience at Gibbys. The food was excellent from start to finish, & Genevieve, our waitress, was fantastic very friendly, attentive, & made the evening even better! We highly recommend the Oyster Rockefeller, & you can't go wrong with the filet mignon or the beef Wellington.
