If you're visiting Montreal & want a truly authentic local food experience, St-Viateur Bagel is an absolute must. This iconic spot has built a reputation that goes far beyond hype.
The moment you walk in, you're greeted by the comforting aroma of freshly baked bagels. What really sets this place apart is that the bagels are almost always warm-often straight out of the wood-fired oven. That warmth isn't just a detail; it completely transforms the experience. The outside has a slight crispness while the inside remains soft, chewy, & subtly sweet, thanks to the traditional honey-water boiling method.
Watching the bagels being made right in front of you adds to the charm. Whether you go for a classic sesame or poppy seed, or try something like cinnamon raisin, every bite tastes fresh & satisfying.
Pros:
- Consistently warm, fresh bagels straight from the oven
- Authentic Montreal-style bagels with a unique slightly sweet flavor
- Open 24/7, making it perfect for late-night cravings
- Affordable pricing for high-quality, handmade products
- A true local experience with visible traditional baking methods
Cons:
- No seating on this location, this is more of a grab-&-go spot
- Can get quite busy, especially during peak hours
- Cash-only at times
- Limited menu if you're looking for a full café-style experience
Overall, St-Viateur Bagel isn't just a place to eat-it's an experience. The combination of tradition, quality, & that signature warm bagel every time makes it unforgettable. If you're in Montreal, skipping this spot would honestly mean missing out on one of the city's most beloved culinary traditions.
I've long been a defender of Fairmount Bagel. Today - after 30+ years of loyalty - I finally gave St-Viateur a shot again (mostly to make my beloved mom happy). We've gotta stay open to change, right?
Turns out I still prefer Fairmount from every angle: the service, the shop is cuter, & even the packaging is better-the bag isn't comically oversized for just six bagels.
& most importantly: the bagels themselves. In my experience, Fairmount is simply more consistent. At St-Viateur, some bagels were noticeably more golden than others, & the ones I tried were less chewy & a bit drier than Fairmount (I sampled both the least & most golden).
All due respect to St-Viateur - thank you for keeping the rivalry alive. Montréal wouldn't be the same if we all agreed. :)

St?Viateur Bagel - Montreal
There's a comfort in returning to a place that gets it right every time. St?Viateur has that steady, unmistakable rhythm - the wood?fired oven working nonstop, the air warm with sesame, & trays of bagels coming out with that signature crisp exterior & chewy center.
Whether you stop in early in the morning or later in the day, the experience stays consistent: friendly, unpretentious, & focused on the craft. The sesame bagel remains the classic, but everything that comes out of that oven carries the same quiet confidence.
It's the kind of spot you find yourself revisiting without thinking - a small Montreal ritual that never disappoints.
I visited St-Viateur Bagel in Montreal & absolutely loved the authenticity! If you're visiting the city, this is a must-try spot for breakfast. The sesame bagel & everything bagel are both amazing fresh, warm, & perfectly chewy. Grab one & head over to Café Olimpico (or your favorite local café) for a coffee the combo is perfect. Highly recommend this Montreal classic!
I had a wonderful experience at this iconic bagel shop in Montreal. The bagels were incredibly fresh & flavorful - perfectly chewy with that signature wood-fired crispness. Watching them bake right in front of us, with thousands of golden bagels coming out of the oven, was truly a treat. The aroma, the craftsmanship, & the warmth of the place make it a must-visit spot for anyone in Montreal. Highly recommended!
Took the kids here to try montreal bagels for the very first time. There was no line even though, it is supposedly one of the most famous icons in the area.
We ordered a half dozen each of the all dressed & sesame bagel with a smoked salmon spread.
The bagels are supposedly fresh but when we tried cutting it & schmearing the spread to try, we find the bagels to be a little too hard & definitely have a good chewy texture but just not that great tasting. Is the place over-rated???
Should we have gone down the street & try out its rivalry bakery? The line was super long for that establishment.
Perhaps, we may just have to go try out that bakery on our next visit to Montreal.
In summary, we definitely felt a bit disappointed by the qualtity & taste of the bagels from here. We may try it again once we visit the'other' bagel shop. :D
Friendly service. Bagels were super good. Soft & chewy. Good amount of seeds on top. Will definitely return when I'm back in the area.
had the pleasure of trying the traditional bagel at St-Viateur Bagel, & I have to say it was incredible! The portion size is very generous - definitely filling enough for a hearty meal. The bagel itself was perfectly baked with that authentic Montreal-style texture: crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, & packed with flavor.
The price-performance ratio here is excellent. You get great quality for a very reasonable price, which makes it a must-visit spot for bagel lovers or anyone looking for an authentic Montreal experience.
On my first visit, we waited about 40 minutes in line, which might seem long, but the friendly atmosphere & the smell of fresh bagels baking made the wait enjoyable. We decided to eat inside, & the experience was wonderful - fresh, warm bagels served with great service.
The next day, we wanted to enjoy the same delicious bagels at home, so we ordered via Uber Eats. Even through delivery, the quality & taste didn't disappoint. It was almost as good as eating there!
The staff at St-Viateur Bagel were very kind & helpful during both visits, which made the experience even better. One thing to note: they only accept cash & debit cards, so be prepared for that. Credit cards are not accepted.
Overall, if you're ever in Montreal, St-Viateur Bagel is an absolute must. I'm already looking forward to my next visit & can't wait to enjoy these amazing bagels again
Good bagel! I appreciate how efficient the team members kept the long line. Sesame bagel was yummy- crispy & crunchy on the outside (maybe one minute too toasty for my liking), & chewy on the inside. Chives spread was nice. Iced tea was good, but I wish I asked for an unsweetened version because it was too sweet & over powered the taste of tea. My husband enjoyed his everything bagel le steak sandwich. Overall, a solid start to the day, but honestly if we had known they were cash only before & had seen another bagel place that accepted card, we probably would have pivoted there.
Super quick & cheap! Good bagels if you like the doughy/chewy texture. The everything bagel was very flavourful - would recommend that. My friends got the rosemary & sea salt & they liked mine more!
Would have enjoyed the bagels more if they were served warm. Very nice & chewy. Loved the everything bagel seasoning. Cash only.

Open since 1957, it has maintained a strong reputation for serving some of the best bagels in the city, with flavors like sesame, poppy seed, & everything bagels being crowd favorites.
While the bagels are undeniably delicious, the shop's small space & long lines can make the experience feel rushed. Adding more seating or streamlining the ordering process could improve customer convenience. Nonetheless, for an authentic Montreal bagel experience, St-Viateur remains a must-visit.
Classic bagels. Crispy & chewy. Fresh warm & delicious. I think I ate 6 of them right away. Get two dozen because one won't last.
Had to wait about 10 minutes in line, but it was totally worth it. We tried the sesame, all dressed, & pumpernickel bagels-so good we had to stop by the Mile End location for two more sesame bagels. Fresh out of the oven, crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside-absolute perfection! Just a heads up, it's cash only.
Got an everything bagel. Had to buy the cream cheese separately in a box. Bagel was okay, chewy outside & fresh inside.
St-Viateur Bagel delivers an exceptional bagel experience. We sampled a dozen, split between regular & sesame, & each was superb-fresh, perfectly chewy, & bursting with flavor. The regular bagels had a delightful density, while the sesame added a crunchy, nutty twist. Service was friendly & efficient, making the visit even more enjoyable. If you're a bagel enthusiast or just looking for the best in town, St-Viateur is a must-try. Hands down, the best bagel I've ever had!

A small store, the bagels were super fresh & delicious. We like Montreal style bagels' slightly sweet, less salty & more chewy nature. We enjoyed the bagels with the Tre Stelle cream cheese, a fantastic cream cheese of the Denmark. We withdrew cash at the ATM in their store when we saw "cash only".
Got a fresh hot sesame bagel & I personally thought it was great. I loved the slightly chewy texture inside & the slight crunch outside. There was a line but it moves pretty fast. Pick up some cream cheese or other toppings from the fridges on the side & pay for them in the front with your bagel order. There's another location not too far from this one & I'd probably just go to the one with the shorter line next time. Bring cash!
