This is a very popular spot, & it was fun to watch the bagels being made fresh right in front of us. The bagels were good, & the live baking experience is definitely part of the appeal.
One thing I'd recommend is checking your bill before paying. We were accidentally overcharged at the cashier, & it was only noticeable afterward. It may have been an honest mistake, but it's worth taking a quick look at your total. Overall, it's still worth a visit if you're in the area.
Ask them what's fresh out of the oven…extra yummy when so warm & fresh!
Went with a few friends last weekend & honestly St-Viateur Bagel did not disappoint - we got there around 10am & watched them pull fresh sesame bagels straight out of the wood-fired oven, which was such a cool thing to see. The bagels are the real deal, chewy & slightly crispy on the outside, nothing like what you get at a grocery store. We grabbed a bunch to take back to the Airbnb with some cream cheese & smoked salmon & it turned into the best lazy brunch we've had in a long time. If you're in Montreal & skip this place you're genuinely doing yourself a disservice.
There really is no question that St Viateur is probably the best bagel in the world. This is especially true when you get it fresh from the oven. The smoked salmon spread they carry is also the best we've ever had, a deserving accompaniment to the bagel. Don't worry if you see a lineup outside the door, sometimes going all the way down the street. It is worth the wait which isn't very long anyway. This place is a must try.
The bagels were fresh & tasted amazing. We came from the US & were amazed by how good these bagels were. They were light & slightly sweet & (since we got the everything bagels) savory. Also, seeing how the bagels were made was great. Definitely the best bagels we had & a highlight of the trip.
Came to St-Viateur Bagel on our last night in Montreal to pick up bagels to bring home. Even though we just finished dinner, we had to try one fresh for science & it was absolutely worth it. They are different from the New York bagels I grew up with, but they are delicious in their own way. We ended up bringing a bunch home to share with friends & family!
Always serving fresh bagels! Bought the all-dressed seasoning for my Aunt who will be going back to Philippines because she loves it!
St-Viateur Bagel is well renowned for a reason. These are the freshest bagels you can ever eat & they are delicious.
You have to experience St-Viateur Bagel for yourself, & trust me you won't be disappointed.
Really amazing fresh bagels. We paid with credit card & looks like they take Apple Pay & Google pay.
Food:
The bagels were excellent. Fresh, warm, chewy, & clearly made with real care. We tried the everything, rosemary & sea salt, & spicy everything, & each one had its own personality. The everything was the classic safe winner, the rosemary & sea salt had a really nice savory bite, & the spicy everything added just enough kick without overdoing it. As someone who loves New York bagels, these absolutely stand up to them, while still adding their own Montreal twist.
Service:
The staff was genuinely great. Super kind, efficient, & clearly proud of what they do. They took the time to educate us a little on the bagels while still keeping the line moving, & you could tell they really care about loyal customers & first-timers alike. They even threw in something extra because we mentioned it looked good, which made the experience feel even more memorable.
Summary:
A must-stop Montreal bagel spot. The bagels are fresh, flavorful, & worth trying across multiple varieties, but the staff made the experience stand out just as much as the food. Great bagels, great energy, & the kind of place that makes you understand why people are loyal to it.
