For Newyorks bagel is sacred, but if there is anything taste or feel like fresh, just right texture, bite, warmth. - then this is it. Its heaven, all flavors are great, my personal favorite is sesame, onion, everything, rosemary & maple-apple. Now New York bagel will never taste the same.
If you're visiting Montreal & want a truly authentic local food experience, St-Viateur Bagel is an absolute must. This iconic spot has built a reputation that goes far beyond hype.
The moment you walk in, you're greeted by the comforting aroma of freshly baked bagels. What really sets this place apart is that the bagels are almost always warm-often straight out of the wood-fired oven. That warmth isn't just a detail; it completely transforms the experience. The outside has a slight crispness while the inside remains soft, chewy, & subtly sweet, thanks to the traditional honey-water boiling method.
Watching the bagels being made right in front of you adds to the charm. Whether you go for a classic sesame or poppy seed, or try something like cinnamon raisin, every bite tastes fresh & satisfying.
Pros:
- Consistently warm, fresh bagels straight from the oven
- Authentic Montreal-style bagels with a unique slightly sweet flavor
- Open 24/7, making it perfect for late-night cravings
- Affordable pricing for high-quality, handmade products
- A true local experience with visible traditional baking methods
Cons:
- No seating on this location, this is more of a grab-&-go spot
- Can get quite busy, especially during peak hours
- Cash-only at times
- Limited menu if you're looking for a full café-style experience
Overall, St-Viateur Bagel isn't just a place to eat-it's an experience. The combination of tradition, quality, & that signature warm bagel every time makes it unforgettable. If you're in Montreal, skipping this spot would honestly mean missing out on one of the city's most beloved culinary traditions.
My bagel was so dry & flavorless. Tasted a day old.
But it's cute inside!
Never a disappointment here. Find a parking spot & you're good to go to enjoy the best bagels, no matter the the flavor. They have cream cheese for immediate bagel consumption.
These are my new favorite bagels! Soft texture & great flavor! I treated myself to 4 or 5 bagels & just snacked on them throughout the afternoon. You should definitely stop here if you're visiting Montreal!
Absolutely delicious bagels! Light, fluffy with a crunch, a mild sweetness which invokes a deep flavorful beady flavor - like standing in a wheat field.
Competes with NYC bagels - arguably one of the best I've ever eaten… (as a New Yorker, from Brooklyn… shhh they're gonna get mad at me.)
** Cash only, so bring it! There's an ATM but fees are higher than a bank ATM. ** Bagels are worth the trip! Try all the flavors - especially the Everything & Pretzel Salt bagels. Note: Montréal style bagels are thinner, denser & more flavorful - best eaten warm from the oven or toasted. At this flagship location, no seating inside, so pop over to a nearby coffee shop (recommend: Cafe Felice).
St-Viateur Bagel is a great place to enjoy authentic Montreal bagels at a good price. The bagels themselves are very good-fresh, flavorful, & exactly what you expect from such an iconic spot.
One interesting aspect is how the toppings work. They give you the bagel, & then you choose & buy whatever you want to put on it from the refrigerators next to the counter. You assemble it yourself. This setup has both pros & cons: it gives you flexibility & choice, but it may not be ideal if you're looking for a fully prepared bagel sandwich.
I also liked that they have a wide selection of souvenirs, which makes the visit more fun, especially for tourists. On top of that, the service was friendly & efficient.
Overall, it's a classic Montreal experience with good bagels, fair prices, & a unique self-serve style that many people will enjoy.
I had a wonderful experience at this iconic bagel shop in Montreal. The bagels were incredibly fresh & flavorful - perfectly chewy with that signature wood-fired crispness. Watching them bake right in front of us, with thousands of golden bagels coming out of the oven, was truly a treat. The aroma, the craftsmanship, & the warmth of the place make it a must-visit spot for anyone in Montreal. Highly recommended!
had the pleasure of trying the traditional bagel at St-Viateur Bagel, & I have to say it was incredible! The portion size is very generous - definitely filling enough for a hearty meal. The bagel itself was perfectly baked with that authentic Montreal-style texture: crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, & packed with flavor.
The price-performance ratio here is excellent. You get great quality for a very reasonable price, which makes it a must-visit spot for bagel lovers or anyone looking for an authentic Montreal experience.
On my first visit, we waited about 40 minutes in line, which might seem long, but the friendly atmosphere & the smell of fresh bagels baking made the wait enjoyable. We decided to eat inside, & the experience was wonderful - fresh, warm bagels served with great service.
The next day, we wanted to enjoy the same delicious bagels at home, so we ordered via Uber Eats. Even through delivery, the quality & taste didn't disappoint. It was almost as good as eating there!
The staff at St-Viateur Bagel were very kind & helpful during both visits, which made the experience even better. One thing to note: they only accept cash & debit cards, so be prepared for that. Credit cards are not accepted.
Overall, if you're ever in Montreal, St-Viateur Bagel is an absolute must. I'm already looking forward to my next visit & can't wait to enjoy these amazing bagels again
Phenomenal bagels! As one of the original Montreal-style bagel shops, St. Viateur Bagel & Cafe is a must-see for folks who enjoy a good bagel (or really any carb). The bagels are served piping hot & have the slightly sweet flavor so core to the Montreal-style bagel. They're quite a bit lighter & airier vs. the New York-style bagel, which I appreciate, & they're great with a sandwich, cream cheese, or just on their own. I tried their sesame bagel, & it was completely covered in sesame seeds. It's also really fun that you can see their whole operation from the cash register -- the kitchen is totally open, so you can see the staff mix the batter, shape the bagels, & pop them in the oven.
Nice atmosphere.
It is obvious that the place has been touched by all this kind of publicity.
Tasted a) the plain, b) all seeds, c) poppyseed, d) onion. I tasted them as they were & with cheese-ham.
They were pretty nice.
Now.. comparing it with the NYC… tough call. But.. i think i will go with the NYC.
Nevertheless nice flavors, cut the too much social activity.
Best
I have to give credit to the woman helping me out here. I asked about the freshest bagel besides the sesame, & she didn't hesitate to feel every single bagel & let me know which were the softest. I ended up getting the pumpernickel since that was one of the softest ones, & it was decent. It was soft inside, but a bit too doughy for my liking, & I didn't really get too strong of a pumpernickel flavor or the signature subtle sweetness of a Montreal bagel. But that crust 👌 The bagel was pretty good, but the exceptional service is why I'll return.
St-Viateur Bagel in Montreal is an iconic bakery known for its hand-rolled, wood-fired bagels that boast a slightly sweet, chewy texture. Open since 1957, it has maintained a strong reputation for serving some of the best bagels in the city, with flavors like sesame, poppy seed, & everything bagels being crowd favorites.
While the bagels are undeniably delicious, the shop's small space & long lines can make the experience feel rushed. Adding more seating or streamlining the ordering process could improve customer convenience. Nonetheless, for an authentic Montreal bagel experience, St-Viateur remains a must-visit.
Don't understand the hype. The bagels are flavorless & the staff is rude.
This is hands down the best bagel in the world-you absolutely have to try it! The taste reminded me of the traditional bread you'd find in old Jerusalem, rich with flavor & authenticity. I even brought some back to Toronto & paired them with my Tim Hortons coffee, & let me tell you, it was the ultimate combination. A must-try for any bagel lover!
As a New Yorker surrounded by incredible bagel options, I have high standards when it comes to bagels. In fact, bagels are one of my all-time favorite food. if I had to pick one thing to eat for the rest of my life (with all the sandwich fixings, breakfast variations, or pizza bagels), it would be bagels! So, I was beyond excited to try Montréal bagels in their home city. I started with a blueberry bagel, which I devoured plain, no cream cheese, no butter, just the bagel itself. & let me tell you, it was heavenly. Sweet, dense, moist, it was perfect on its own. I could never enjoy a New York bagel without toppings with the same reaction. Later, I tried an everything Montréal bagel as the base for a breakfast sandwich (at another restaurant), & while it was delicious, I have to admit-nothing beats a New York everything bagel for sandwiches. So, are Montréal bagels better than New York bagels? My answer: yes & no. For eating plain, the blueberry (& I'd image any sweet bagel) a Montréal bagel was unmatched. But for sandwiches, New York bagels still holds my heart. That said, Montréal bagels from here deserve all the praise-they're so flavorful, & absolutely worth a visit. I took a half-dozen blueberry bagels home with me because I just couldn't get enough. 5 stars all around!
Had high hopes coming here after hearing amazing things about their bagels & the bagel scene in Montreal overall. Flavors were good, a little faint though & the texture was right on point. There was no space to sit at all/bathroom & they didn't have an option for toasting which is how I enjoy my bagels.
I found St. Viateur's bagels to be overrated. The hot & fresh poppy seed was not bad, & the cold sesame had a good flavor, but in general the cold bagels were hard & void of much flavor. I made this a central place to visit during my time in the city, & I definitely wouldn't next time. I don't know if I came on an off day, or if this style just falls far short of the NYC style. A reminder that it's cash only, & take-out only. My favorite aspect of the bakery is the quaint atmosphere, & you're not really able to enjoy it because of the nature of the line & it being take-out only.
