This restaurant will be at the top of my list for'Worst Restaurants in Montreal.'
Food: absolutely garbage.
Service: trash.
The only flavor you can taste is salt. I honestly felt like my tongue was destroyed, & I probably consumed an entire year's worth of my normal salt intake in one meal. If salt were as expensive as gold, one serving of your lamb could buy two Teslas - the company, not the car.
Service can't even be rated, because there was no service. Nobody talked to me. I was ignored like I didn't exist. Nobody asked how the food was (which explains why it's salty as hell - the waiters never ask). Nobody recommended anything, food or drinks. Nobody asked if I wanted dessert.
I'm genuinely shocked by how bad the service was. This isn't just one of the worst in Montreal - it's genuinely hard to find a worse place in Quebec, let alone Canada.
Not recommended.
We were able to get a reservation for the same day. We tried duck confit, deer, veal cheek, salad, gnocchi, tartare, for dessert we had the Pavlova, sticky toffee, & the chocolate cake. Everything was very good, the suggestions we got from the waiter were accurate & the serving time was short. We would comeback & we do recommend it.
MERCI MERCI !!
My wife & I had an amazing dinner at Monarque while in town for a long weekend. We started with the steak tartare (pictured). I had the duck confit, which I loved. She had the veal cheeks & said it goes into her dining hall of fame. It was that good. Service was friendly with the right balance between tending to us while giving us space to enjoy our food & conversation. Oh & the dessert: we had the apple cider donuts. That might sound funny at a place like this. But wow! What a way to end a fantastic dining experience.
We stayed in Old Montreal, & it was walkable from our hotel, which was a plus.
Made a reservation for my boyfriends birthday dinner & had a lovely evening in the salle à manger. Highlights included the morue charbonnière, tartare de thon, & le tomate. From the host to the support staff running food, to the cocktails & our server, everything was thoughtful, delicious, & efficient. Despite the fact we were too full to have dessert as planned after the côte de boeuf (it's huge), our server still brought my boyfriend un mélange de petits morceaux with a candle in it for dessert!
Lastly, they were very accommodating with my difficult dietary restriction which demands little to no salt added to dishes. I am so grateful they made it possible for me to enjoy celebrating my boyfriend on his day!
We will absolutely return.
Was very crowded yesterday, still, like always, the service is smooth, even with a lot of patrons we were able to make a full meal (drinks, appetizers, entrees & dessert) a little under 2h
For drinks we got a beer & a mocktail
The Not Into Yoga mocktail was just too good, peppery, with a very creamy coconut milk
The white beer we got was very good for 9$, bitter just enough
For appetizers we decided to try the tuna tartare on special that was amazing, & some nordic shrimps with succin which were very tasteful
We continued with the half lobster, served with salad, fried cauliflower, an extra order of fries & the butcher's cut which was flank steak served with fries. Everything was good, except that the meat had little bits of tendons inside which made it a little bit chewy
Finally the dessert was the pavlova with raspberries which we shared. It was really good, raspberries were just acid enough to counter the sugar from the meringue & whipped cream
We ate from the brasserie menu-what a delicious meal with perfectly timed, attentive service. We had the bone marrow, which was easily the best bite of our trip to Montréal (best bite of food I've had this year), & I had the duck, which was so savory & crispy & tender. My husband had the swordfish special, which was lovely, but we agreed that my duck was the clear winner. We split a mille feuille for dessert, which ticked all the boxes that a dessert should! The restaurant space is beautiful & I would love to go back & try the full tasting menu/sit in front of the window into the kitchen.
Our experience started started strange & unpleasant: we came in just in time for our reservation & had to wait for almost 10 minutes for the hostess. She was on a phone the whole time, actually being quite rude to the phone guest, figuring out the reservation 2 months from now - while we just stood in front of her. When she finally decided to put her call on hold she didn't even apologize or acknowledge our long useless wait. Alright…
Then we waited for drinks for 30 minutes - our first app was served before our cocktails. Just because they didn't see them on the bar - they stood there melting for 20 minutes. Barely an apology here as well.
Food, however, compensated for this - great steak tartare, lovely octopus & desserts were amazing.
I really liked the food & the atmosphere of the restaurant, so I hope the service mishaps were a one time thing but it was still unacceptable for a restaurant of this level.
Delicious dinner with a great lively vibe on a Monday night! We ate in the bistro. Two of us must eat gluten-free, which was easily accommodated with many dishes (including 3 desserts) being gluten free. While all meals were terrific (lamb, sausage, fish of the day), be sure to order the fresh garden vegetables. Cooked so simply with butter & salt… a great way to enjoy the summer produce! Pictured is the (GF) raspberry pavlova.
I wish we could give multiple reviews over time in order to give feedback without affecting the review.
Ive been recommending this restaurant to all my friends visiting over the last few years because every time I've been, it always hit the mark. The daily fish, the duck confit, the lobster with starch, the vegetables & the squid are always a hit for me.
However, i just visited again this week & honestly they need to up their dessert game. I bet they loss/changed their pastry chef because it went from amazing to really disappointing.
The original Millefeuille which has always been on the menu is still phenomenal. BUT,
- the paris brest, is not restaurant standard. It looks like a sad stale donut on a sandwich plate. I mean look at it. Taste was ok, the pate was crunchy, but honestly does not belong to this restaurant, nor even a pastry shop.
- the forest noir was also a bit shocking. 1cm thin layer of flat cake with some decoration. I mean, we dont really care about price when going to Monarque so i cant believe its a matter of food cost here. It almost ate like a sauce you would wipe at the bottom of your plate with a piece of bread.
Honestly, still an excellent restaurant but lacks the sweet finish to make it phenomenal as it used to be.
I will be thinking twice before recommending this restaurant again until the dessert card is fixed.
This was one of the best restaurants I have ever been to in Montreal. It makes complete sense why it was one of the top restaurants in Canada (#17). Service was top tier & the atmosphere was a vibe. The food was absolutely incredible & I had the best time eating here. I can't say enough good things about all of the dishes. Underrated dish of the night was the morel mushrooms, asparagus & fiddleheads. They were cooked to perfection. The bone marrow & snails were chefs kiss. All of the mains were to die for & you can't go wrong with choosing any of them. The desserts were wonderful. The passion fruit pavlova was the perfect combination of tartness from the passion fruit & the airy sweetness of the meringue. The rice pudding was really sweet but the flavour combo was great. The maple crème brûlée was a standout with the maple flavours. Overall I had an amazing experience with the food, service & atmosphere. Highly highly recommend!
App & main were both well made, but the dessert was disappointing.
I had a wonderful birthday dinner at Monarque. The steak tartare may be the best I've had, & the bone marrow was very unique & flavorful. The jus for the duck was a bit on the salty side, but pretty much everything was wonderful. The servers also gave me some little desserts & a candle!
I had a delicious dinner last night at Monarque. Sat at the bar & Johanna served us. She was so nice, friendly, helpful & attentive. In fact all the staff are friendly & so polite. Had the signature Monarque cocktail which was perfect. The halibut, salad & cauliflower were delicious, so tasty & beautifully prepared. We didn't have room for dessert unfortunately, I know their desserts are fantastic as well.
What makes Monarque so special is the great ambiance, delicious food, excellent service & friendliness of all the staff. Can't be beaten!! Looking forward to my next visit!!
We read great reviews & were excited to try Monarque. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The service was cold & inattentive. No one checked up on us. Our water glasses were barely refilled. I noticed the tables around us received better service & the servers constantly checked on them. I don't know why. While no one was rude to us, we weren't properly attended to, receiving just the bare minimum of hospitality.
The wine selection & wines by the glass was fine, but the cocktails were extremely weak & 90% ice. I am not exaggerating. I took one sip of my drink through the straw, & there was no more liquid. The glass was filled to the brim with ice. This was the same for all 4 cocktails I ordered. The food was average at best for a French restaurant of this high standard. The portions were also very small. I'm used to French dining & I'm aware portions are usually small. However, this was the smallest I've ever received in a French restaurant in the city, especially at this price. My table of 3 ordered 12 oysters, octopus, foie gras, & tartare to start with. For the mains, we had duck confit, veal cheeks, & boudin. For dessert we had Pavlova & poached pear hazelnut. Everything was average. Not good & not bad, but nothing to rave about. The best part were the oysters. They were fresh & juicy. Not sure if I will return.
We went as we saw that Chef Nancy Oakes was there Friday night.
My friend had been to the restaurant before, but it was my first visit. It was a bonus to be seated next to the window that allows you to see the kitchen staff in action.
The service is excellent. Very attentive & friendly staff, who , when I mentionned I felt some dishes too salty, made sure I was given a new dish with less salt & that all subsequent ones were made accordingly.
The food was excellent, the portions just right for a 7 course meal.
We were surprised though with the dessert: un chocolat fondant was a bit « ho hum » for a menu of that caliber.
The restaurant was full that night so the noise level was a bit high, but overall a pleasant experience.
Visiting the city & decided to dine with them for a birthday celebration. It was highly rated on Google & recommended by many. But our experience was quite bizarre.
First of all, we walked in & were guided to our table. Our server never made an appearance or introduced herself. Some other staff helped us with our coats. We were seated for a while & she was no where to be found, another staff swung by to give us the wine list & menu. She was no where to be found. Finally, she came by. She didnt know the menu well enough to answer our questions (she was honest abt it. But that doesnt make it ok). Idk if she was that busy or just avoided our table & eye contact at all times, very inattentive. It took her so long to come to our table, other staff had to step in & come check on us.
The food itself was ok. Impressed with some dishes more than others. But they mixed up our main courses. & they dont reli explain the dish upon serving, so thank god i know what i ordered. Plus the super long waits in between. Our dinner was 3+ hours for 3 courses.
Our server didn't come back to take our dessert order or the bill. Two other different staff stepped in…
Overall, very mid experience for what we were paying for.
Dinner here was delightful! Service was top notch & attentive & we enjoyed the recommended three courses (four, if you add dessert). We found the portions small enough to accommodate all three although the third course could have been split. Our favorite dish was the miso black cod! Would strongly recommend for a birthday dinner or anyone traveling from out of town!
Favorite restaurant in Montreal. Dishes are delicious, visually stunning, & well executed. Staff are efficient & friendly. Make sure to save room for dessert.
