Review Summary

Reviews describe La Cave à Manger as a cozy basement boulangerie in Old Montreal with old world charm and a welcoming vibe, where pastries are the star and pistachio croissants, pistachio rolls, croissant eclairs, and ham and cheese croissants are repeatedly praised alongside bagels, pain au chocolat, and other flaky treats, while coffee and hot chocolate are well liked. The setting is small and seating is limited, yet the atmosphere and friendly staff create a memorable experience, and the location near the Bonsecours Market adds to the appeal. A few notes mention the prices as high and occasional inconsistency with some items, but many call the quality exceptional and say visits feel like discovering a hidden gem. Overall La Cave à Manger stands out for its pastries, especially the pistachio pastries and croissants, with many visitors planning return trips to try more of the menu.

Incredible pastries, the almond/ chocolate croissant is filled to the brim. We went twice in 3 days & I wish I could go back. Watch where you sit on the outdoor benches, they are covered in bird shit.

Delicious pastries! We had the ham & cheese, chocolate almond croissant, & the lemon meringue roll. All delicious!

still thinking about our lovely breakfast here & missing this place already.

We visited one early morning on a tuesday so it was still nice & peaceful. We went down the steps to a cozy bakery with a few seating inside & friendly staff. The pastries were made fresh & we got to enjoy a perfectly cooked smoked salmon sandwich, ham & cheese & fresh-out-the-oven pistachio croissant rolls! everything was sooo good! simple but quite satisfying for some reason.

Outside seating is a delight if you dont mind cleaning up some bird poo a bit so you can sit comfortably. Overall we really had a great time.

It would be nice to have the garbage bins moved to a location not by the steps though. But I get that maybe a'high-traffic' area would be best so the birds dont mess with it too much.

if you stop by, definitely try their croissant rolls!! the pistachio one was just amazing!

La Cave à Manger Boulangerie in Old Montréal is an iconic, rustic patisserie that's definitely worth a visit! They offer a highly curated selection of pastries, & we went for the chocolate croissant éclairs & the tiramisu croissant roll. Both were absolutely delicious-the fillings were rich & flavorful, & the pastries themselves were fresh, flaky, & buttery without being overly sweet. Every bite was a delight!

I also loved the ambiance of the place. It's rustic & charming, with a perfect outdoor seating area to enjoy your treats. It's a great spot to relax & take in the vibe of the Old Port. I'll definitely be back to try more of their amazing pastries!

I thought I would love this place, but I ended up not really liking it. The coffee was insanely strong- almost undrinkable, & I thought the pastries were too sweet. Maybe it was just us though, because people do rave about this place & it did go viral, but I didn't really like it & probably won't go back.
For reference: We got the tiramisu circular croissant, the red velvet croissant, & an iced coffee

Pastries are a bit expensive, but the chocolate chip cookie is phenomenal 🍪 Really beautiful patio to enjoy in warm weather.

One of the best pain au chocolat & overall pastries in Montreal… they taste amazing. If they would be fresh, I would give them 5 stars on food though. But still delicious. They're on the more expensive side, but they're worth it. They're located in a very nice historical area of downtown of Montreal.

Their staff is usually nice, haven't had yet a bad experience. I'm sure I'll keep coming here, every time I have cravings.

If I could rate value for your money, I would give it a 2/5 stars. The food was good but too expensive for what you're getting.

Went to get breakfast here on a Sunday. It was so busy & you can tell the place was popular. Everyone was served quickly so you weren't waiting in line for more than a minute or two.

I ordered a'hangover cure' with a maple latte for myself & a jambon beurre sandwich for my husband. The hangover cure is a croissant sandwich with cheese, chives, bacon & a runny egg. Each sandwich was $12.50. The latte was $6 or $6.50. Somehow with 15% tax I paid $36.22. The price surprised me because at first, I didn't realize how expensive my sandwich was & I didn't realize there was an egg in the sandwich. However, I still believe the price of the food was inflated overall.

The jambon beurre was made with fresh bread but it was stiff & cold. Nothing was warmed up or toasted. The ham & cheese was cut thick but also cold. Maybe it's supposed to be like that & it's just our fault for expecting something different.

In comparison, the hangover cure was warmed up & toasted. The bacon was the perfect amount of crispy & chewy. The cheese was delicious, I've never had anything like it. I had to eat it with a fork & knife however because everything was oozing out. Not a critique, just a beware if you order & think you're going to be able to walk with it.

The maple latte was really good but small. About the size of a small coffee from McDonalds in Canada. So $6-6.50 for that is a lot.

There was a variety of other pastries there as well that many patrons were purchasing.

Super cute location, tasty pastries, however the breakfast sandwich - called the hangover cure - is not good. It lacks flavor & is covered in bland béchamel sauce. I couldn't even finish half of the sandwich it was so distasteful.

The pastries were absolutely incredible. We tried the red velvet croissant which was so delicious without being too rich or sweet, we loved it so much we had to get more for the road! Also the coffees are really smooth & balance their sweet treats perfectly.

Great variety of pastries, I've tried four & all of them were absolutely delicious. London fog tea needs some improvement though, but you can't excel at everything at the same time

Probably the best pastries I've ever had. The man that served the pastries had top tier customer service to start off. But most importantly, wow… these pastries are done so perfectly. The ONLY sad thing about this place is how there is limited dine in space, which is understandable. But honestly, the fact that the pastries are so amazing makes up for it. Definitely worth driving here for!

Such a great all around space & vibe. The pastries are big & baked to a wonderful texture with a slightly crisp outer layer & very fluffy interior. All made right there behind the counter. Also recommend the matcha hot chocolate. Very matcha forward & delightful, to not mention a beautiful color.

This place is ridiculously expensive. Almost $10 for a croissant is insane, but honestly, it's worth it. The almond chocolatine is one of the best pastries I've ever had. Definitely worth a visit for a splurge on a sweet treat. It's busy & crowded & there's not much room to sit down in the winter.

Freshly baked pastries; very friendly staff; highly recommended. The only thing to note is that access is online from outside but it is worth being lost
