Review Summary

La Cave à Manger is a tiny yet highly praised bakery tucked into Old Montreal with a cozy, intimate vibe and a small seating area, where pastries are repeatedly described as flaky, buttery and addictive. Standouts include the pistachio roll, croissant eclairs, croissants and the tiramisu croissant roll, along with beloved bagels and ham and cheese croissant, and the space often earns praise for its breads and creative offerings; the pistachio croissant and red velvet croissant are frequently cited as among the best in town. The service is consistently friendly and attentive, with staff going the extra mile, though some notes mention prices being on the high side for the portions and occasional inconsistencies in flavor. The space is small and sometimes crowded, with outdoor seating in good weather, and the basement location adds rustic charm. Overall, La Cave à Manger stands out as a must visit for pastry lovers in the Old Port, delivering high quality baked goods and a welcoming atmosphere, with many reviewers already planning a return.

We stayed across the street at Maison Bohemia who highly recommended La Cave a Manger. Over the course of the week we enjoyed: bagels, croissants, baguette, pain au chocolate & other assorted pastries. All were excellent. Nice cozy atmosphere with old Montreal charm. A definite must try bakery.

The best bakery in the old city, it's a bit expensive but worth it. Try the eclairs & the round cream filled pastries. Honestly everything is good. The place is a bit small but honestly I don't care it is so good

Tucked into the cobblestoned charm of Old Montreal, La Cave à Manger Boulangerie feels like the kind of place you wander into on a whim & leave remembering for all the right reasons. I stopped in near closing time on a small but meaningful mission: to find a birthday treat for a friend, ideally something kissed with pistachio. By then, their pistachio pastries had already sold out, hardly a surprise, but my momentary disappointment didn't go unnoticed.

The gentleman behind the counter met it with an easy warmth that defines great neighborhood bakeries. Along with the chocolatine & almond croissant I chose, both impeccably flaky, buttery, & deeply satisfying, he tucked in a cookie on the house. It was a small gesture, but one that spoke volumes about the care & attentiveness here. Service like that turns a good bakery into a beloved one.

Most importantly, the pastries landed exactly as hoped. My friend was very happy. In the end, La Cave à Manger delivered more than dessert. It delivered generosity, quality, & a reminder that hospitality can be just as memorable as what's in the pastry case.

Loved this place! Such a cozy bakery with a warm, welcoming vibe & kind staff. The pastries were absolutely delicious. I'm a big fan of pain au chocolat (or chocolatine, as we say in Québec 😄), & this one truly lived up to the hype, one of those pastries you see in TikTok videos & immediately want to try. It tasted heavenly: flaky, buttery, & perfectly balanced.

The space itself is small & intimate, with just a few chairs, but there are standing counters as well, which makes it comfortable for a quick stop. Overall, a lovely spot for high quality pastries & a cozy moment, I'll definitely be back!

I may not be French but food is universal. Out of the 5 countries I've traveled to, & the 5/6 bakery/cafes in Montreal I went to, these are some of the best pastries I've ever had. Everything from the lamination to the bake to the ratio of flavors was exceptional.

I will say so the seating is outside so plan accordingly with the weather.

Normally I take photos for my reviews but I was too busy enjoying the food! 10/10 will be coming back here again.

Nice place to stop in for some morning pastries & breakfast .

La Cave a Manger is located next to the Bonsecours market in an underground basement like area . Once you go down the steps you are met with a warm environment & a case with classic pastries including bagels , croissants sweet & savory .

Coffee barista was very friendly as she prepared a cappuccino for me . I decided to get an almond croissant which was delicious .

Nice flaky on the outside & moist filling inside . Ate it with great happiness. Coffee is well prepared & not too heavy . I also purchased a cheese & ham savory croissant for a later snack (not pictured) . Combination of the cheese melted & creating a crust with the pastry is awesome .

Great bakery & will definitely stop in again .

still thinking about our lovely breakfast here & missing this place already.

We visited one early morning on a tuesday so it was still nice & peaceful. We went down the steps to a cozy bakery with a few seating inside & friendly staff. The pastries were made fresh & we got to enjoy a perfectly cooked smoked salmon sandwich, ham & cheese & fresh-out-the-oven pistachio croissant rolls! everything was sooo good! simple but quite satisfying for some reason.

Outside seating is a delight if you dont mind cleaning up some bird poo a bit so you can sit comfortably. Overall we really had a great time.

It would be nice to have the garbage bins moved to a location not by the steps though. But I get that maybe a'high-traffic' area would be best so the birds dont mess with it too much.

if you stop by, definitely try their croissant rolls!! the pistachio one was just amazing!

How to tell our family we are leaving them all & moving to Montreal because of this bakery & their'rolls'. Everything here in this underground bakery is EXCELLENT, but their truck tire-size rolls of croissant dough with heavenly fillings put us over the edge. It's so good that we are torn to post this because you will come & try the fresh orange juice, great coffee & baked goods produced with the highest standards & best possible ingredients (not easy to do these days) & - then it will be even more crowded. But such an amazing place & the world needs all the amazing it can get these days. Making the world better, one pastry at a time. &, no, I am not even their mom. ❤?

It's sorta hidden but once you find it, it offers delicious bakeries & good coffee.
The bakery was a bit pricey but it's located on a touristic spot.
I would recommand the Tiramisu Roll, its crunchy on the outside, & soft on the inside that is filled with sugary filling!

Bakery is excellent. Small place to sit in if it's raining outside. Recommend them to have umbrellas to increase outside sittings

Amazing bakery with plenty of outdoor seating with shade at street level. Coffees & cold drinks available. Chocolate croissant eclair with salt was incredible, was kind of a Nutella like filling. If you come towards the end of the day around closing (I came at 7:40pm) they may give you an extra treat! Very nice staff.

This was such a cute bakery just close to the water. The staff was very nice & accommodating & the food was absolutely delicious. There isn't much seating inside but plenty of places to sit outside which was nice. Will definitely check it out again

their famous round stuffed croissants did not disappoint! We opted for the crème brûlée croissant, & let me tell you, it was incredibly filling-so much so that we're not sure it's meant for a single person to tackle in one sitting! The combination of the flaky pastry & the rich, creamy filling was a match made in heaven. In addition to the croissants, we couldn't resist trying their hot chocolate, & we loved the variety of flavors available. We chose the Matcha hot chocolate, but there are also options like ube & pumpkin spice, each topped with a giant roasted marshmallow that adds a fun & delicious twist. It was chocolate was rich & comforting, making it the perfect companion to our croissant. We're already planning our return trip to try their other croissant flavors. If you're in the area, this bakery is definitely worth a visit for a truly indulgent treat!

We stopped in to order some pastries for dessert. The chocolatine/pain au chocolat was very good. The pistachio & strawberry matcha croissant(?) rolls were good too. They tasted great, but the bavarois/filling's consistency wasn't what I expected. Overall, a neat bakery in a nice setting.

Not surprisingly, I am back here for the second morning in a row. La Cave a Manger is a tiny, unassuming bakery that may well be the best find of my two week sojourn in Canada. I stumbled upon wonderfully fresh & tasty oceanside seafood in Newfoundland, an astonishing 7-course tasting menu on the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, & oysters & a panko crusted haddock burger done perfectly on Prince Edward Island, but the pastries & bread here are simply world-class. At the risk of slipping into a food coma today, I am back to have another three pastries here & to take away at least six croissants & a couple loaves of bread. The service has been warm, friendly, & responsive each time I have been here, & it has both a cute little seating area inside & a larger patio space outside. I will be back.

This is what you can expect from French bakery & coffee shop! Nice, welcome, & down to earth staff, which they love their job. There is an option to eat-out or stay in. However, if it is gloomy day, I would suggest outside because of stone-carpet street aside. They offer Breads & Pastries, using organic flour & filtered waterlog fermentation process to enhance flavor & digestibility, as well as pepperoni pizza, Natural Wines. Strongly recommended!
