We had a spectacular meal at Holder last night. My wife & I shared oysters, calamari & a fish & chips dinner with a nice bottle of reasonably priced wine / with perfectly dine crème brine for dessert. The real bonus though was the exceptional waiter - Philip - who found the perfect balance of being attentive without being intrusive. He seemed to know just before me when my water or wine needed refilling. Johan who also attended to us was also awesome. Highly recommend!
One of the few places we were lucky to get dinner reservations...which is both good & bad. The service was excellent...well trained & knowledgeable wait staff. Ours was Anabelle & she made some great suggestions, topped off our wine & checked in on us. The food on the other hand was ok...we 4 got the Hanger steak (was cooked medii but was still tough/, Lobster ravioli (no flavor, wouldn't reco), the duck confit was good & the veal Marsala steak was the best among the 4 dishes.
I would give our recent dining experience at Holder six stars if I could. The food was excellent. We shared the calamari & mozzarella di bufala to start. The braised beef cheek was outstanding - rich & flavourful. The grilled hanger steak was bistro perfection. But what made the evening was possibly the best service we've had ever. Professional of course. But friendly & kind & genuine. Joe made a great evening unforgettable. His food & wine suggestions were spot on. So if you're gonna go to Holder, ask for a table in Joe's section. It's worth it.
The restaurant has a pleasant layout & a comfortable atmosphere-thankfully not too loud, which made for a relaxed dining experience. However, the service left something to be desired. While our server was clearly inexperienced, they were polite & made a genuine effort, which I appreciated.
Unfortunately, the food didn't justify the high prices. The mussels had an overpowering smell that made them unappetizing, & the French fries were soggy & greasy. The salmon tartare had potential, but the quality of the fish didn't seem particularly fresh.
The wine list was average-nothing remarkable-but be sure to double-check prices. Our check listed a different price for the bottle than what was shown on the menu, which was a bit frustrating.
Overall, while the space is inviting, the experience didn't live up to expectations, especially considering the cost.
Our group really enjoyed everything. Beef tartare, mussels, caramel dessert stood out. Good Canadian wine list.
Excellent service in a warm & cozy environment with a great crowd of people & a great wait staff. Food was delicious French fare. They did an excellent job with the wine. The place is just a little noisy. The ceiling could use some acoustic baffles to make conversation easier, but I can't wait to go back!
The mussels in broth were unbelievable. Fantastic service, including for kids. Thanks to Joe for the wine samples & cookies.
I'm writing this review two years after my visit to Holder. I had their Moules à la Pastis & I am still thinking about it. This is as good as moules-frites gets. The mussels were fresh & the broth was both flavourful & complex. Is it the best moules-frites? I cannot say because I have not tried every moules-frites in the world but if I have to find a better moules-frites that would be an endeavour. Sure, maybe the best moules-frite is still out there. But to be tossed back to the sea of bistros, to be again at the mercy of fortune, whether it's the not-so-fresh undercooked mussels or the disappointment when the chef mistook simple to mean bland in the business of mussel-cooking. Or when the cook has taken too much liberty with the wine that you can skip the aperitif.
Why? When one could just ask for a table & a bowl of Moules à la Pastis at Holder.
Did it blow me away? No. Was it good French food at an expected price? Yes. Cool atmosphere, decent wine selection, better whiskey selection
This was truly one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. The food here is beyond delicious, even down to the free bread. We ordered the French onion soup, the grilled hanger steak with shallots & fries, the pappardelle with mushrooms, pine nuts, & pancetta, & a side of sautéed rapini. Everything exceeded our already high expectations. For dessert, we ordered the butterscotch mi-cuit with Maldon salt & butterscotch ice cream- I don't think I've ever had a better dessert. The wine selection is fantastic & my boyfriend loved the cider on tap! If you find yourself in Montréal, this place is a must!
Our quest for a delightful dining experience during our weekend getaway led us to Holder, & it surpassed all our expectations. With our server Antoine offering impeccable wine & dessert recommendations, & his attentiveness ensuring our glasses were never empty, combined with the stunning bar & exquisite cuisine, we will undoubtedly be recommending this dining experience. We recommend: -Château Garraud'18, Lalande-De-Pomerol. (For a full bodied affordable red wine. Antoine's recommendation) -The Duck Confit -Crème Brûlée -MI-CUIT Au Caramel Salé (A Butterscotch style lava cake with ice cream. This was a unique dish that is hard to compare to anything else I've had. This was also a Antoine recommendation)
Wonderful full-service restaurant on Rue McGill on the edge of Old Montreal. Delicious French-inspired food steak, pasta, seafood, salads. Spacious brasserie style room. Excellent wine & cocktails. Highly recommended.
I rarely post Google reviews unless I found someplace to be exceptionally spectacular. I went to Holder on a Sunday night & had one of the best restaurant experiences in Montreal in a long time. For all of summer, I'm accustomed to visiting all the top-rated restaurants & terrases in Montreal but always had sub-par service at most places. Was really a spark of joy visiting Holder - the staff is incredible, sooo warm & friendly & there's always someone to take care of you. In terms of service, one of the best restaurants I've been to in a long time - hands down!!! They have an amazing selection of wines if you're a wine-person & our server let us try a few options before which I thought was very nice. The atmosphere, the staff, the food - all top-notch!!!!!!!
Only positive is the atmosphere & & staff were friendly enough. Other than that I was so disappointed. Waited forever between courses (easily 30 minutes). Ordered the rack of lamb, it was only 4 chops. A rack of lamb means full rack of lamb like Gibby's. Food was cold, every time waiter came to fill wine glasses he would spill it on the table. Was expecting so much more. Will never return.
My husband got sick from eating mussels here :/ - servers seemed to serve certain customers over others seemingly along racial lines, it was a frustrating experience & the food could have been better overall. There are gluten free options here including the onion soup but be aware the onion soup is a wine reduction & tastes different than your typical onion soup. Also note the regular menu is not available during brunch service.
We took a group of executives to Holder this week & the experience was fantastic. Antoine was attentive, friendly & efficient The food, wine & sangria were delicious! Thank you for a great evening.
Fine dining in a tourist area. There are a lot of fake high-end restaurants in Old Montreal. We had a superb dinner here. The halibut special was truly special. Good wine selection, attentive but unpretentious service. A pleasurable experience all around.
Delicious French food & excellent service. I enjoyed a duck confit that was incredibly moist & flavorful, with meat that melted in the mouth. The salad dressing, enhanced with white truffle, was outstanding. A slightly chilled white wine complemented the meal perfectly on a summer night. The crème brûlée was not overly sweet, boasting a very smooth & delicate texture. Great meal!
I had one of the best meals of my life tonight. The atmosphere was perfect. The wine suggestion given by Fred along with the food was 5 stars all around. I am beyond satisfied. The food was fresh & the service was perfect. I hope to go back again soon!
