I happened to come across the previous year's bill a couple of weeks before my yearly visit & so decided to keep it to compare prices since I always order the exact same meal. The price increased by 10% in one year! The worst part, the serving size had decreased. The coleslaw bowl was half full. Coleslaw!
Needed to grab a late night dinner after catching the Habs game & was happy to see Dunn's is open super late. I got the Super Combo Smoked Meat for takeout & it was a massive portion size for only about $30 after tax.
The food tasted great. I'd say this was probably my second favourite smoked meat meal during my stay in Montreal. The meat was a little too lean for my liking, would have probably preferred it to be a little bit more fatty (kind of felt more like a pastrami sandwich). But the portion size was huge, flavours were great, & value for money pretty good. The coleslaw in particular was delicious. Will definitely come back the next time I'm in Montreal!
I cannot begin to tell you how good my sandwich, coleslaw, & cheesecake were. I had Dunn's for the first time only 5 days ago. & I have thought about it all of those 5 days since. For a number of reasons, I wish I lived in the area; Dunn's is one of them. It's pricey, but the taste alone makes it worth it. My only complaint (if you can call it that) is the fries were nothing special.
Definitely a must visit for some local food & the history of the place.
Had the famous smoked meat sandwich & Italian poutine. Smoked meat was juicy & soft, good light spicing, served with a tangy pickle & super tangy coleslaw which I think cut through the meatiness really nicely.
Couldn't not try their famous strawberry cheesecake made on site, a nice tangy cheesecake with great creamy & fluffy texture, strawberry adds a nice fruitiness to it, however it was lacking much of a base… if it had more of one I would've rated it outstanding!
Lovely service, attentive & polite team.
TOURIST TRAP WITH BAD FOOD. I used to go quite often at Dunn's late 90s early 2000s. Everyone was welcomed like a family member & the food was excellent. NOT ANYMORE. Stay away from this place. The waiter was barely polite & you're obviously just a dollar sign to him. The bread was ultra thin, soggy right from the start, & tasted nothing. The cook added just a tiny spot of mustard in the middle of the bread & that shows how little they care. The meat (medium) tasted nothing. The coleslaw was room temperature & served in an half-empty tiny bowl buried under the fries (they just threw everything in the basket). The tiny fries were barely hot & limp & were tiny so it cooks faster so they save money. Dunn's used to be a great place & proudly serving good food. Not anymore & it's now even worse than your local fast food joint. I've spent $35 for nothing & never going back. Stick to Schwartz instead because they have pride THERE.
Critical Knife & Fork:
This or Schwartz's? Followed the recommendation of a native of Montreal & tried Dunns. The smoked meat is delicious, just the right amount of tender, fat, & seasoning. The bread can't handle the meat but who cares! Lots of mustard, coleslaw & a dill pickle makes this an unforgettable lunch. & of course the poutine was Devine! Strongly recommend. No nonsense service & a staple of Montreal's food culture.
Staff were friendly & very prompt with welcoming you, taking your order, attentiveness. We weren't overly hungry but wanted to try Dunn's. We split the super sized Montreal smoked meat sandwich & split the routine. It was enough for both of us & it's was delicious. I can say that this was the best coleslaw (according to my taste)I've had in Montreal & I had coleslaw at 4 different places.
The most amazing Reuben & Club Sandwich. The meat was juicy, moist & stacked high. The Club sandwich was more than anyone can eat.
They give you a Hugh pickle, coleslaw & fries. It is pricey but since I got two meals out of my order I was able to justify it.
The restaurant was clean with a nice ambience & service was good.
This place tops all other smoked meat places on montreal. Everything was fresh & delicious. Tve coleslaw OMG, the best I ever had. Fries were amazing🔥
I had the Reuben & it was perfect. Cheesy, meaty delight on pumpernickel bread. Coleslaw was so crunchy & don't forget the dill pickle.
French onion soup wasn't impressive, but the smoked meat was great. The meat platter had a lot of fries & some bread, I would have preferred less fries & more coleslaw.
I really like a smoke, but when I am in Montréal, I go to Dunn's Famous for my smoke meat fix. Great atmosphere & service. I had the super combo, smoke meat sandwich, fries, & coleslaw. Everything was excellent on my plate. I recommend Dunn's Famous.
We had a great casual lunch at Dunn's. Thoroughly enjoyed our smoked meat Reuben, but ESPECIALLY the coleslaw, which was vinegar based & honestly to die for. The fries were also very tasty & held very minimal oil, which is rare for hand cut. The portion was pretty big & definitely shareable. Our server was attentive & kind. Would definitely return!
There is a nice selection. I'm not fan of hot dog poutine but general tao one never disappointed me. Fish & chips was ok. Nothing special. Their latkes (potato pancakes) were missing salt big time. It's one of my favourite dish & I was very disappointed. We also tried karnatzel, which I don't recommend. I feel like you should eat this cold since it's a dried sausage, meanwhile it was served hot soaked in oil. I think we just got a beef hot dog instead with a side of a pickle. Their coleslaw is good, not too much vinegar there like most of the places I tried. Their chocolate cake is very tasty.
Yes, eat this. Mediterranean Salad & a Super combo with the Rickard red beer. The coleslaw was okay but everything else was amazing!!!!
The ambiance was classic for a taste of Montreal smoke meat sandwich's & poutine. The two of us shared the Super Combo Smoked meat sandwich & replaced our fries with Quebecoise poutine (+$7). It was the perfect amount of food. The coleslaw had a great zing that cut through the richness of the sandwich & poutine. Not super busy with friendly & fast service. Price was very reasonable & not overpriced. A definite must visit.
Hidden Gem near shopping. Melt in your mouth meat. Try signature bloody mary. Poutine n coleslaw flavorful. Dont go anywhere else!
I was in Montreal for work last winter & I found myself pulling a late night & needing a nourishing dinner after 10pm. Upon seeing that Dunn's was still open, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to try a different smoked meat joint, & I was very much satisfied! I got the smoked meat sandwich combo with fries & coleslaw & it was delicious. Savory, filling, & reasonably priced. While I'd say my favorite smoked meat sandwich in Montreal is still Schwartz's, I would gladly return to Dunn's too.
Visited fairly late at night on 8/22. Sat promptly then seemingly forgotten about for 10mins or so. It was pretty busy so I won't get too worked up. Gentleman came to take order, nice guy. I need to preface this next part with, I HATE pickles. Not, "oh darn there's a pickle on that, I'll just take it off", more "oh there's a pickle on that, never eating as it is infected, & I should burn the building down to be safe". I communicate that in a way to every server so they get it. My brother also piled on reminding our server I didn't want a pickle on the coleslaw. So, the coleslaw showed up with a pickle.... so not eating that. Yes I could have tried returning, but I didn't pay enough attention in French class & it's coleslaw right? Why make a big deal when I can do it later online.... Sandwich was... good? I mean it was yummy but not crazy. The poutine... The fries & cheese were fine, but go easy on the thyme or rosemary in the gravy. Edible but not memorable. Oh.. & the reason for 3 stars instead of 4? that meal plus a pop was $43.82 with tip. Not worth it... at all.
The smoked meat sandwich on rye bread was heavenly. It was served with coleslaw which balances the fat of the sandwich. It was the best sandwich I've ever had in my life. But I guess fries are not their forte? They were soggy, oily & takes away the joy one feels while devouring the sandwich. They should gather together & reinvent the way they do the fries.
