It's owned & operated by an Indian family so there are some Indian varieties of the pies as well. I opted for more traditional varieties. I went for the spinach, egg & cheese as well as the steak & cheese. To my surprise I actually preferred the non-meat pie. The steak was made with a tomato-based sauce that I wasn't loving but didn't dislike either, the density of the meat was more like brisket to me. The pie crust is expertly made & the packaging is smart. The place is very small, only a few tight counter seats available & no restroom but that's just a limitation of the address.
Lots of pies to choose from (both meat & vegetarian), & some selections of traditional Australian/New Zealand pastries too. I went with the steak & mushroom, which the cashier recommended. I didn't plan on eating my pie right away, & she offered to give me a cold one instead (which is a bit cheaper) & provided reheating instructions too. Really great service!
WOW that filling -- the steak was really tender & the gravy had great flavor. The outer layer of the pie was really flaky, but the inner layers were doughy & seemed raw still even after following the reheating instructions. I guess it wasn't quite baked through the first time? The pie was still fantastic overall, so I'd come back.
Love the fresh made in store, New Zealand pies. Pastry is so flaky, & the insides are full of a rich tasting gravy with thick chucks of meat.
Day 1 in @montreal & the first order of business was to climb Mount Royal. Coming down for lunch, we checked out this place serving cusine from New Zealand, @ta_pies. Surely, 4.8 stars from over 600 reviews is something? & something it was! Just awesome pies. But don't miss the rum balls!
I've been going here since they opened! Amazing food & people! The pies here are better than many you find in New Zealand!
Very close to the authentic meat pies that I tried in New Zealand. Definitely will be going back for more!
