Update (20260321): Quality seems to have dropped IMO. All three of my dishes came & were subpar, boring & a disapointment. Friends. I sent to the restaurant had a similar reaction too. Which is too bad. Used to be my fav pace. Dropping from a 4 star to a 3 star. :/
Oh Hong Mere, where have you been... & why did it take so long for us to meet...erm... yeah, stick to a review.. ok, GTC (yeah, you know what I mean) is not too saucy, crispy & just daaaamn good. The veg menu has MANY nice options rather than just the filler classics. Some spicy fish soup? Yup. They got that too. I ordered delivery & my order came in good time & was nice & hot. No complaints really. Will for sure order from here when I need me some GTC loving. The restaurant has been fully renovated & looks amazing! Love it!
Accidentally pass by this place, menu made me go in for a bite
The flavour actually quite impressive 😊very authentic Chinese dishes but also accommodating to some local palate 😌
Ordered the braised pork with quill egg + spicy cabbage, very satisfied with the taste
Would probably come back & try some more dishes 😌
Hong Mère is amazing. I went with a group for a Wok cooking masterclass & we watched & learned as Chef Yu WOKed us through 11 dishes from his menu. We learned how to choose a wok & if we chose cast iron, how to season it for non-stick cooking. Then he showed us how he prepares, cooks & plates 11 different dishes. The attention to every detail & his mastery of North-Eastern Chinese & Szechuan cuisine is astonishing. This is no
assembly line. Every dish is cooked from scratch. My favourites were the Japanese tofu & Salt & Pepper shrimp, & spicy fish soup & crispy chicken...actually EVERYTHING is amazing. Family owned & operated...THIS is best of Montreal Chinese. & chef Yu wants to help people with limited exposure to discover AUTHENTIC Chinese. So ask about an alternative to General Tao & the other typical fare. You are going to be shocked at what you experience. I am going to make a video & attach it to this post late March 2026.
Delicious northern Chinese dishes, with varied flavours & spicing, with occasional accents of Szechewan peppers. The owners, including their professionally trained chef son, were welcoming & try hard to please (MSG: yes or no, your choice.)
The house specialty chicken legs & the ginger pork were memorable. Try the twice fried shrimps as well, you will likely not be disappointed if you like tempuras.
A favourite vegetable dish was the spicy cauliflower.
Small edit-- We always get takeout & love the food. We dined in one time & it was alright. The atmosphere is not great as they only have bright industrial white lights so I probably wouldn't dine in again. The food is still delicious however so we'll definitely continue to get takeout from there!
Went with a non Chinese friend. We didn't order spicy dishes cause my friend cannot have spicy food. Overall the food was okay. Both the beef & pork had too much potato starch. It didn't meet my expectations (heard from friends that it was really good) tho. However my friend loved the dishes. One potential reason could be we didn't order the classic spicy dishes that I'd like. I'd go with my Chinese friends to order more classic dishes to see how I like the restaurant. Giving it a ⭐⭐⭐⭐ considering that the dishes we ordered weren't really those I'd like, which might have impacted how I liked the food. If I can give a half rating, I might do 3.5 :)
Giving ⭐⭐⭐⭐ rating to Service cause the cashier explained that they couldn't do % for tips anymore due to the new law, & suggested that I could change the number I'd like, which made me feel like I should give more, despite that fact the lowest default tip was already about 18%. But.. I might have misinterpreted..
The BEST!! My faves: Japanese Tofu + Eggplant, stir-fried green beans & the chicken with house-spicy sauce 🤤
Some of the best Chinese food in Montreal. Spicy & fresh & delicious!
Got B1 Beef option which was a good portion, spicy, & delicious. The peanut butter dumplings were alright. We asked the bill to be split but the server split it price wise instead of by which items we each ordered, when I clearly ordered a lot more than my friend. There was a tiny ant on the table. The water jug has an annoying cap that doesn't make pouring easy.
Excellent food - more in the savoury side of things. We ordered pork belly with egg & pad Thai. The pad Thai was not super sweet which we liked, & not spicy. I had the hot & sour soup, nice & rich. Three in our party, still had a bit of leftovers (good sized portions)
À must! Very authentic. A Fantastic experience! EVERY dish was exceptionnaly good. We highly recommend the Chicken with house spicy sauce, the cold shredded potatoe salad, the Green beans & the Fish soup.
I got the spicy chicken plate with a side of rice, it was so delicious!!! & my partner got general tso tofu which they loved. Will have to come back next time I am in Montreal
