Hong Mère is amazing. I went with a group for a Wok cooking masterclass & we watched & learned as Chef Yu WOKed us through 11 dishes from his menu. We learned how to choose a wok & if we chose cast iron, how to season it for non-stick cooking. Then he showed us how he prepares, cooks & plates 11 different dishes. The attention to every detail & his mastery of North-Eastern Chinese & Szechuan cuisine is astonishing. This is no
assembly line. Every dish is cooked from scratch. My favourites were the Japanese tofu & Salt & Pepper shrimp, & spicy fish soup & crispy chicken...actually EVERYTHING is amazing. Family owned & operated...THIS is best of Montreal Chinese. & chef Yu wants to help people with limited exposure to discover AUTHENTIC Chinese. So ask about an alternative to General Tao & the other typical fare. You are going to be shocked at what you experience. I am going to make a video & attach it to this post late March 2026.
Delicious northern Chinese dishes, with varied flavours & spicing, with occasional accents of Szechewan peppers. The owners, including their professionally trained chef son, were welcoming & try hard to please (MSG: yes or no, your choice.)
The house specialty chicken legs & the ginger pork were memorable. Try the twice fried shrimps as well, you will likely not be disappointed if you like tempuras.
A favourite vegetable dish was the spicy cauliflower.
Uber... I'm very disappointed. The only dish that was good was the pork knuckle. Everything else was terrible.
Spring rolls burnt.... Fried Rice way too starchy... Pineapple, chicken unrecognizable inadequal breading, totally soaked... Beef & vegetables also not good... beef is either poor quality or they don't velvet their beef before they cook it.
Shrimp sezchuan inedible... consistency like mashed potatoes.
I would not recommend this restaurant unless all you order is the pork knuckle.
The BEST!! My faves: Japanese Tofu + Eggplant, stir-fried green beans & the chicken with house-spicy sauce 🤤
My favorite Northeastern Chinese food in the Western hemisphere. My family has roots in that area in China & I don't care what anyone else says - this place tasted like home. My husband & I live in Boston & drove here for a long weekend to celebrate my birthday...& everything from the server in the back busy storing inventory while shouting welcome to us in Chinese to the taste of every dish...I don't remember tasting this kind of flavor outside of China. Get the traditional Northeastern Chinese plates like 大拉皮 or 锅包肉, we added on a specialty Chicken dish that the chef recommended & didn't regret it. Licked the plates clean & we'll be back every year 😉
Food was delicious!! Service & atmosphere was good too. Recommend the chicken with the house sauce. Will definitely be back!
À must! Very authentic. A Fantastic experience! EVERY dish was exceptionnaly good. We highly recommend the Chicken with house spicy sauce, the cold shredded potatoe salad, the Green beans & the Fish soup.
This is authentic, delicious Chinese food.
Highly recommend C01 (chicken in home sauce) & L03 (stir-fry beans)
No background music, you're able to talk & hear your friends talk
Not sure how I missed this place before, it's been there for 11 years but I'm sure glad I found it now. A delicious Chinese restaurant outside of Chinatown, yay!
BTW, their website food photos are not all accurate so don't rely on them.
I ordered 3 things: Cantonese chow mien, pork belly dish, green beans with ground pork & all of them were delicious & I highly recommend. I can't speak for all the other dishes but those were certainly amazing & good quality. All the ingredients were a little above & beyond, you could tell.
The Cantonese Chow mien for example used a slightly different noodle than I'm used but it was still so good & the veggies & meat were a good quantity & quality. They used little chunks of thicken thighs for example, tender & marinated instead of thin dry chicken breasts in other places I've been to. It also had shrimp, chicken, beef! All 3!
1000% recommend & will be coming back. The in house dining set up looked quite nice as well, not super fancy but definitely beyond a cheap in & out place so you could come with friends & family to have a nice dinner there & it's BYOB!
I got the spicy chicken plate with a side of rice, it was so delicious!!! & my partner got general tso tofu which they loved. Will have to come back next time I am in Montreal
