Had an incredible omakase experience here my first night in Montreal. The food was phenomenal, the flavors were interesting & varied with a strong French influence. The menu was well thought out & the drinks were delicious too. Only about half the menu was sushi, & all of the plates were conceived from the French/Japanese fusion, so this was not a traditional Japanese omakase which made for a unique tasting.
The service was wonderful, very friendly & efficient, & the atmosphere was calm & intimate. As a visitor to the city I could not have asked for a better evening.
We attended the 6pm seating on a Wednesday evening for Omakase dinner, & the experience was extraordinary! The Montreal-born Japanese trained Chef prepared 16 mouthwatering & sensational courses, each one expertly prepared & beautifully presented. The wine pairing consisted of two glasses of white wine, one of chilled saki, & one red wine which were served in perfect harmony with the flavors in each dish. To say that this experience was divine, could be an understatement.
Michelin-level service. The staff is friendly & professional.
I salute the chef's courage to deliver on such a unique omakase menu. The chef's knife work & rice technique are on point.
The interplay of textures & flavors was truly gratifying.
Great ambiance with sober decor & good music.
I'll be back.
Wonderful culinary experience in a beautiful setting & staffed by warm conscientious people. The tataki appetizer was delicious (flavor bomb) & the maki sushi roll was amazingly fresh & balanced. I had the shrimp dish & my husband had the short rib. Both were incredible...a true fusion of Japanese & French cuisine. All were paired with very smooth cold saki. The dessert was also unique & delicious. Loved the yuzi ice cream. One thing we will request when we return is more seasoning, as that's our preference. Highly recommended.
This was my fourth time at Nama Omakase, & Chef Gacong never disappoints. He always pays great attention to detail, making sure every guest feels welcome & leaves completely satisfied. My most recent visit was for a farewell dinner. We chose the 5-course menu at $135. Some of my friends & family were worried they might still be hungry afterward, but by the end, they were absolutely full & they really loved the entire experience, from the rich flavors to the beautiful presentation. The Japanese-French fusion is truly the highlight, blending elegance with creativity. The cocktails are fresh & tasty, perfectly complementing the dishes.
The ambiance is modern & beautiful, & the service is excellent. The staff took the time to explain each dish, which made the experience even more special. Every bite was a true delicacy. Highly recommended! 😁
An unforgettable dining experience from start to finish.
We opted for the Omakase & couldn't have been more impressed. Each course was a beautifully curated expression of flavor, texture, & presentation. The cocktails were expertly crafted, & the service was attentive, knowledgeable, & warm. Truly a standout meal that we'll be talking about for a long time!
I had the pleasure of dining at Nama Omakase last night & it was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we walked in, the ambiance was intimate & refined, setting the stage for what turned out to be an extraordinary culinary journey.
Every course was thoughtfully prepared & beautifully presented. The fish was incredibly fresh-melt-in-your-mouth quality-& the balance of flavors in each bite showed true mastery. The chef's creativity really shined through with unique combinations I've never seen before, yet everything worked harmoniously.
The service was warm, attentive, & knowledgeable without being overbearing. You can tell there's passion behind everything they do here-from the pacing of the meal to the way each dish is introduced.
This was easily one of the best omakase experiences I've had in Montreal. If you're a sushi lover or simply looking to treat yourself to something special, Nama is a must. I'll definitely be back.
I took my girlfriend on a date 2 nights ago & I must say... Get ready to emerge yourself in a dinning experience that goes beyond the food. From the service, atmosphere, vibe, music everything about Nama was exquisite. Impeccable service, & the food is mouth watering. From starters to the main, you can't go wrong with any options from their menu. Don't get me started with the desserts, the amount of attention the detail & combination of flavors crafted in each one of them is outstanding. My gf & I took a variety & let me tell you.. our 2nd stomach was beyond satisfied!
A must try! We will be definitely returning real soon!
$135 PP Omakase menu (for two). Great service. Food was hit or miss for us. Lovely experience overall.
Overall impression: Impeccable service from our waiter. Beautiful dessert plating. Too many'pre-packaged'-tasting flavors & disjointed elements to recommend the cooked dishes as standalone. Sushi omakase could still be good.
5 course omakase breakdown:
First course: Beef tartare & red snapper- primary ingredients were both fresh. Tartare had a touch too much sesame oil & felt a bit greasy but still enjoyable. Red snapper was perfectly good. Pickled mushrooms etc. tastes exactly as what you'd get at any other spot. The Lychee(?) had an overwhelmingly synthetic taste. Couldn't help but feel that some elements come commercially prepackaged.
Second course: Eggplant katsu with salad, swordfish on daikon. Great textures in the eggplant with high quality ingredients. Swordfish was a little dry, but fine with the sauce.
Third course: Sushi course. Received red snapper again, & it turned out to be the freshest of the fish in the sushi row. We would have preferred a bit more vinegar in the rice with a little bit more wasabi. Maki was made beautifully, with great balance of flavors, & the fish on top was perfection. While the sushi was subpar, the maki was the highlight of our meal
Fourth course: Short rib & brussels sprouts. Good, familiar flavors. Brussels sprouts were greasy but otherwise cooked perfectly. Short rib a bit dry with a'spice package' tasting sauce.
Fifth course: sake-infused ice cream with rice pudding & orange crisps; gin(?) infused ice cream with cake & what tasted like waffle cone crumbles. Gorgeous plating, both hits & misses (orange crisp = perfect. cake = slightly stale, rice pudding = disjointed, ice creams = delightful)
Bottom line: Good experience. Would not go for the cooked dishes at this price point. Higher end sushi omakase might still be worthwhile if the maki is an indication of freshness & execution with that specific experience.
The Omakase experience is exceptional.
The discussion of the preparation & quality of the dishes is remarkable.
Fine French service combined with precise fresh Japanese flavors make this a must experience.
The meal at Nama offered moments of promise, notably the well-cooked but overly sweet Miso Black Cod & attentive, knowledgeable service in an elegant setting. However, execution was inconsistent: the Octopus Leg was dry & flavorless, the Halibut Beurre Blanc was overcooked & poorly balanced, & the $60 Nigiri Omakase lacked standout quality to justify its price. The sake selection also underwhelmed, leaning unexpectedly sweet. Despite its upscale ambitions & strong presentation, Nama fell short of delivering value or consistency, especially compared to other high-end Japanese restaurants in Montreal.
5 stars - An Exceptional Omakase Experience
Nama Omakase delivers an unforgettable dining experience from start to finish. Every dish was beautifully plated & thoughtfully crafted, showcasing top-tier ingredients & inspired flavor combinations.
We started with the Scallop Leche de Tigre-Japanese scallop with pomegranate, avocado, shiso, & lemon. Bright, fresh, & incredibly well balanced. The Ora King Tartare with ponzu, wasabi, & watermelon radish was equally stunning-delicate but full of personality.
The Soft Shell Crab was a standout-crispy & rich, served with kimchi, cucumber, salmon roe, & an indulgent spot prawn bisque. The flavors were bold but refined.
We finished with a 12-piece sashimi moriawase & 6-piece nigiri omakase-impeccably fresh fish, perfect rice, & elegant presentation. Every bite was close your eyes heaven.
Service was excellent-attentive, knowledgeable, we arrived really early (5:30pm because we had a show to get to on a Monday night, so despite look was sleek & intimate, making it perfect for a special night out, it wasn't busy. The staff mentionned that we were in fact early
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a next-level omakase in Montreal.
We celebrated a friend's 40th birthday at Nama Omakase & had an extraordinary experience! Every dish was exquisite, showcasing impeccable freshness, vibrant flavors, & beautiful presentation. The chef's expertise was remarkable, offering a masterful balance of creativity & authenticity in each course. The staff was professional, attentive, & genuinely warm, enhancing our dining experience with thoughtful details & impeccable service. Highly recommend Nama Omakase for a truly memorable culinary journey. We left completely delighted!
This is a high-end modern French & Japanese fusion cuisine. The nigiri omakase at lunch was exquisite, the rice was perfect & each fish had a different flavor profile. The highlight for me was the soft shell crab dish, it was excellent, especially the little dabs of lemon/lime gel, blending everything perfectly with the sauce & tying the dish together harmoniously. The restaurant is led by chef-owner GaCong Ruan, who grew up in the restaurant industry, & executive chef Michael Ho, a finalist from'Les Chefs!'. We were lucky to be greeted by them both today! Perfect for special occasions, business dinners or just a quick lunch or late evening craving for high quality sushi... this is the hot spot to go to.
This was an amazing omakase experience! The food was absolutely incredible, the fish was unbelievably fresh, perfectly seasoned, & each course was beautifully presented. Every bite felt carefully curated, with a perfect balance of flavors & textures. You can tell the chef takes great pride in their craft, & it truly shows.
Beyond the food, the service was just as exceptional. The staff was warm, attentive, & made sure we had a flawless experience from start to finish. The chef took the time to explain each course, adding a personal touch that made the meal feel even more special. The atmosphere was elegant yet inviting, creating the perfect setting for a memorable night.
If you're looking for an outstanding omakase experience with top-quality fish & impeccable service, this is the place to go. Already looking forward to my next visit!
Nama Omakase exceeded all expectations! We were a last-minute group of 15 people, & they went above & beyond to accommodate us seamlessly. From the moment we arrived, the service was impeccable-attentive, professional, & incredibly welcoming.
The food was absolutely delicious, with every course showcasing fresh, high-quality ingredients & masterful preparation. Each bite was a perfect balance of flavors, making it a truly unforgettable dining experience.
Beyond the food, the vibe was fantastic-elegant yet relaxed, with a great ambiance that made the evening even more enjoyable.
Highly recommend Nama Omakase for anyone looking for an exceptional experience, whether for an intimate dinner or a large group gathering. Will definitely be coming back!
If you've ever wondered what it's like to ascend to sushi nirvana, look no further than Chef GaCong's omakase experience in Montreal. I went in expecting a fancy dinner, but I walked out questioning everything I thought I knew about food, art, & frankly, life itself. From the first dish, it became clear that this wasn't just dinner-it was performance art. GaCong doesn't just prepare sushi; he crafts edible masterpieces with the precision of a neurosurgeon & the flair of a Broadway director. The presentation was so immaculate that I hesitated to eat it, half out of respect & half because I didn't want to ruin the Picasso before me. Every bite was an existential crisis. The kind of flavors that make you reevaluate your childhood memories of eating supermarket sushi. & then there's GaCong himself. A man of infinite skill, he runs the sushi bar like a virtuoso conductor leading a symphony of flavors. GaCong is also a great host with plenty of wonderful tips about Montreal & hockey! This guy isn't just a chef; he's a culinary prophet. Sure, it comes with a hefty price tag, but let's be real-can you really put a price on a spiritual awakening? My only regret is that I'll never experience this meal for the first time again. Chef GaCong, please remember me when you're world-famous.
Can't say enough good things about this food, experience, & chef! What a fantastic restaurant! The food itself was divine, with each course more unique & flavorful than the next. But what really made this meal so special was the attentive & friendly service, the ambiance, & the welcoming environment. The wine was great too! GaCong the head chef was incredible & knowledgeable, & made us feel so special. A must try! We will be back.
I had dinner tonight with my family at Nama. We had an amazing experience. First of all, I would like to thank our server. He was phenomenal. We had our kids tonight, who are 5 & 7. Having kids in fancy places can be stressful, but the entire team there was so kind & attentive. Our server was patient & nice. He helped us with the menu & checked in on us. Not only did we have great service, but so did the kids. My son & daughter felt included in our experience. The bartender was great. I had the espresso martini. My drink was strong. My kids had a mocktail. I mentioned the kids' preference, & the bartender made the perfect fruity mocktail. They enjoyed it. The pictures shown are what we ordered tonight. My kids enjoyed the octopus. It wasn't chewy & the sauce that came with it was delicious. The salmon tartare is good but we were most impressed with the tapioca cracker that came with it. The sashimi is nicely cut & fresh. Their soy sauce is salty & doesn't overpower the fish. My favorite is the makis.I love the taste of the maki without too many ingredients or sauces on top. You can taste the protein in each one. We highly recommend the ramen dish. The broth was creamy with a ton of flavor & the noodles were cooked perfectly. The rack of lamb was cooked well & didn't taste gamey. We finished the night with the coconut cake & ice cream. The dessert had a sweet & sour flavor. The green tea cheesecake was also good. Thanks to the team for the experience. We had a wonderful time celebrating my partner's birthday. We will definitely be back for the Omakase experience & more.
The best, & I literally mean THE BEST Omakase experience I've had. Chef GaCong made sure that me & my SF had a memorable anniversary. The twist on each dish really made it one of their own. The attention to detail & the flavor combinations are outstanding. Each dish made us crave for more. It felt like we had to be extra delicate with each piece because they looked like literal art. We want to thank the staff & chef for this beautiful & unique culinary experience. We will be back!
