Modavie is a timeless place that brings us back to our roots, where ladies & gents gather and eat in a lively atmosphere caused by great conversation, live music and the wooden scents of a vintage room. Born in 1997, it quickly became popular among locals & visitors, and is now considered a Montreal institution.
Treat yourself to refined French fare in an antique & dimmed corner locale spawning two floors. From the classic beef tartare, to tasty sweetbread, to the famous ratatouille, your cravings will be easily satiated.
Reviews describe Modavie as a warm, lively Old Montreal bistro with a welcoming vibe and memorable live jazz that enhances the evening. The menu is praised for classic French bistro dishes like mussels and fries, duck confit, lamb chops, steak frites, and seafood, with generous portions and fresh ingredients. Attentive, friendly service and a knowledgeable staff are repeatedly highlighted, helping guests feel cared for in a vibrant setting enhanced by a diverse wine list and craft cocktails. Overall, the atmosphere, food, and music combine to create enjoyable dinners for dates, friends, and celebrations, making Modavie a reliable choice in Montreal.
Very nice french restaurant, but the food was a bit lacking, maybe it was an off day. They claimed they were famous for their lamb... but I found it unseasoned. Our table also ordered the seasonal pasta bolognese but it was also very bland & under seasoned. The duck confit was the best item on the menu today along with the freshly baked bread & whipped butter. Was overall a bit disappointed.
Classic French cuisine with a wonderful atmosphere. The staff is extremely professional & will happily guide you through the menu. We started with the escargot & moved on to the poutine with braised lamb & duck confit for our main course. Highly recommend all 3! There was live music & overall a great atmosphere.

A great night out for you & your partner. Definitely leave a note on your reservations to sit near the live music on either 1st or 2nd floor. The food was good, however, for the price it's a little too expensive, but I guess you're paying for the experience of the live jazz as well. My partner & I ordered the steak & frites, & the duck confit. I would recommend both dishes if you're having a hard time choosing a meal. The in-house cocktail selection was great, especially the'blood orange squeeze' &'pineapple express', which I highly recommend.
Had a great night at this charming restaurant. We ordered the duck confit, steak frites, & a couple of drinks. Everything was delicious, especially the cocktails (pineapple express & blood orange squeeze)!! Immaculate atmosphere. Loved the live jazz, incredibly romantic!!!! Very fast & friendly service. Would definitely recommend for a nice date night out.
When the six of us entered Modavie for lunch we had no expectations but really like the decor & ambience of this bistro. We ordered from the lunch menu expecting small portions. Wow, tp our pleasant surprise the portions were very generous & delicious. The Red snapper & the Duck confit in particular were delicious. Highly recommend this restaurant if you want good food at outstanding value & quality.
We had an amazing meal at Modavie. Our server, George, gave us great suggestions from the wine to main dishes to desserts. Everything was on point. He was very attentive & friendly. Go for the lamb chops. They are to die for! My son has the mussels & my husband had the duck- both superb. In addition, there's live music which gives the experience a nice touch. We wanted to have a great French meal & Modavie did not disappoint. ❤️❤️❤️
We stopped in unexpectedly after an early show in Vieux-Port. Lorenzo greeted us & treated my family & I very well. Our server Patrice was excellent & the food was superb. I had the Confit de Canard (with Foie Gras add on) & it was probably the best duck confit I've ever had. I'd like to go back for an evening when there is music but our time in town probably won't allow it. Definitely would recommend.

This restaurant is my favourite in Montreal. I had the pleasure to visit yesterday & today. For appetizers I highly recommend the French onion soup & sweet bread. My friend said the escargot was the best it contained the perfect seasoning balance. The lamb chops are amazing & so is the duck confit. Every cocktail I tried was delicious. Don't forget to get the crème brûlée. The server was meticulous & Lorenzo took great care of us, what a gem of a person! I will definitely be back when we visit Montreal next!
We went to Modavie to celebrate a special occasion, calling early to make sure we were seated next to the live band. Upon arrival we were seated behind a post which blocked our view of the band. Further, we could barely make out the music over the loud chatter which seemed to echo throughout the restaurant making it difficult to hear the person right next to you. The salmon of the tartare was tasteless but the garlic snails were not bad. The duck confit was amazing but unfortunately it was the only dish that impressed us. The Niçoise salad came out more salty than the manager who arrived to rectify the intolerable dish.
Lorenzo's excellent service turned a great brunch into a phenomenal experience to be remembered. I recommend the duck waffles or the braised lamb. The live music is enjoyable & the ambience is very rustic yet cozy. Thank you again to Lorenzo & the team who took care of us today.
Fantastic. One of'many' great places to eat in Old Montreal. Having said that, Modavie stood out as being one of the best. Service was excellent, the decor & live music was great as well. The food......perfection! French Onion soup & the Duck Confit were both the best we've had yet. The'huge' bowl of local muscles was also the best. Highly recommended!!! 😀

Amazing dinner. Went here spontaneously on a Saturday at 7:30pm without a reservation with my boyfriend. Was sat immediately at the bar as all tables were reserved (totally get it, love sitting at the bar). The bartender was attentive & very talented as the cocktails we got were both superb. We ordered the snails as an app, I got the duck confit, & he got the lamb chops. We were given extra bread for the snail butter without asking. Waters always refilled. Meats cooked perfect. Live music was to die for. Got double espressos, crème brûlée, & profiteroles for dessert which were equally delicious. If I lived here I think I'd go every week.
The vibes here were amazing, super elegant yet homey & cozy. Everyday they have an accompaniment for music & the day we went had jazz playing while we were eating. The apps (escargot & soup) were 🤌- both were not your standard snails or french onion soup. The soup had an extremely rich flavour shine through that came from the deep caramelization of the onions. The accompanying garlic butter & cheese that was paired with the escargot was salty which was good. Onto the mains, the table favourite was the duck confit. The duck was so tender & when paired with the sweetness of the walnuts & the acid from the pickled cabbage, it made a wonderful bite. The lamb chops were great as well, the meat was cooked to our liking. We do wish there was a sauce to accompany the lamb, perhaps a sweet red wine sauce to cut through the saltiness of the veggies & enhance the lamb taste. As an aside, the potatoes were delicious LOL. The lamb pasta was amazing as well, flavour-wise. We wish there would have been more lamb in the pasta as the portion of meat felt lacklustre. The pasta was perfectly cooked & held onto the sauce very well. Lastly, the drinks were delicious- perfectly balanced between sweet & tangy. The service here was phenomenal, they consistently checked up on us & made sure we were well taken care of. Overall, the restaurant was a great experience in MTL, a good place to go to if you're in the area & are looking for a more expensive dinner.
Great find! Had live music great bartender & the foods amazing. Def a great date night spot. Great attention to my lemon allergy. Had the duck one of my fav & hubby had the rack of lamb. All good. Hubby loved thr French onion soup.. For me it had great flavor but to chunky I perfer more broth
Excellent restaurant with live music. The food was delicious, & the portions were generous. I ordered a duck confit, a beef tartare & a flank steak. The flank steak was ok, I had a bit higher expectation. The prices are above average, including for the drinks. Overall I loved it a lot, just a bit expensive.

Everything was really good! Tasty food (we ordered onion soup, escargot, mussels & duck, wine, additionally they brought hot delicious bread with butter). Really nice service & amazing atmosphere with jazz music.
10/10 brunch experience!!! (June 2022) Very quaint atmosphere, delicious food, affordable prices & outstanding ambiance. Particularly enjoyed the jazz music at brunch which was a delight. I had the eggs benedict with lamb, creme brulee for dessert. My friend had the breakfast poutine. Came for dinner May 2023 - duck confit was delicious & so was the creme brulee. The appetizer bread & butter was so yummy. Beautiful background live music which I enjoyed over my meal. Jan 2024: had duck breast, grapefruit mimosa.
