Kyo Bar Japonais offers a lively, stylish atmosphere in Old Montreal where guests enjoy fresh, authentic Japanese dishes that are beautifully presented and full of flavor. The menu runs from sashimi and nigiri to wagyu gyoza, takoyaki and generous bowls, with many dishes praised for balance and quality and tasting menus that showcase the kitchen's skill. Service is widely appreciated for its friendliness and knowledge, with staff guiding guests through dishes and drink pairings and handling dietary needs with care. While prices can be high, the overall experience is memorable and the restaurant is ideal for celebrations or a special night out, with reservations recommended on busy nights.
A great restaurant with some fantastic dishes & beers! Ed, Jacob, & Jesse all served us throughout the night & they were fantastic as they provided great recommendations for drink & food, along with some great conversation.
The beers being opened tableside & poured was a level of service I haven't experienced in quite some time from a restaurant. It was greatly appreciated. Being a vegetarian, Jacob recommended the Yami Yami roll that was one of the best sushi dishes I have ever had, hands down. The spicy edamame, miso soup, & vegetarian dumplings were all amazing choices as well. They weren't overfilling or overpowering in quantity & seasoning, respectively.
The Hitachino beers were all so good & a great way to compliment the dishes if you enjoy beer with distinct flavor profiles. Normally, I'm only used to Sapporo as my home province has very little offering in the way of Japanese beer. The Hito White, Lager, Damidami, & Red Rice were all so unique but complimentary to the food. The taste was quite noticeable but subtle at the same time; each one was in its own way fantastic. I cannot emphasize enough how well they paired with the food that was served. I truly respect a restaurant that can elevate the experience by pairing drinks so effectively with the food.
The entire restaurant is beautifully laid out. It felt like the prohibition met rustic-modern, & had a baby. It really provided a wonderful atmosphere to spend the evening so close to attractions like the Notre Dame Cathedral & La Grande Roue!

I've been here at least four times. Every single time, the food is impeccable. Highlights include the Tuna Tataki, the Gindara, & the Wagyu Gyoza, always a must-order. & generally speaking, the staff is always courteous & kind.
Every time, however, there's always a bit of something lacking with the service. A long delay between being sat down & getting to order (might as well order food at the same time as drinks, takes 20 minutes to be seen again), or taking the menu away despite saying you'll order more, or the (in)frequency of the waiter/waitress coming back to pour the bottle of alcohol. But tonight, the service was the poorest I've seen. Table for 2, 9pm on a saturday. My partner ordered a 2017 Chablis for the two of us, but only later did we realize we were given a 2023 without the waitress noticing or acknowledging. Okay, that's fine, we didn't notice either, so we'll drink it & accept that we're paying double for an inferior bottle. However, having to wait 5-10 minutes for our waitress to notice our glasses are empty on a repeated basis is disappointing. & when she does pour us more, she pours an uneven amount between the two of us (huh?).
The worst part of it all: at the end of the evening, when dessert & tea are finished, there was a 30 minute(!) wait just to get the cheque. During that time, our waitress disappeared completely. Other staff members are cleaning tables, finishing up payments with other guests. We're trying to flag down ANYONE who looks in our general direction, no one comes to check in on us. Eventually we get someone's attention (lady putting down napkins for tomorrow's service) who talks to someone else. We get a monsieur (not our waitress) to organize the bill. He gives apologies for the slow Point of Sale (sure, whatever) & takes another 5-10 minutes to organize the bill. Madame waitress reappears in our line of sight & is, again, not checking in on us. Thank you monsieur for finally letting us leave, but now the tipping situation is awkward (monsieur didn't serve us, & madame waitress pulled a Houdini & forgot how to do her job). Fine, minimal tip, & you can get the rest from the bottle you wrongfully picked out.
& just as a little cherry on top of this discouraging evening, on the way out, with only a few people still at tables, there was the pungent chemical smell of sanitizing products in the restaurant. What a good way to turn one's stomach for the worse after such good food. I'm just sad that this experience ruined this restaurant for me. I would only recommend this place as a'visit-once' for anyone who's never tried it before.
Perfect dinner & an amazing experience overall! The service was outstanding - our waiter was incredibly knowledgeable about the entire menu, explained everything in detail, & even took the time to guide me through what I could safely eat during pregnancy, which I really appreciated.
The food was absolutely delicious, & every dish looked & tasted amazing, from the starters all the way to the desserts, ice creams, & mochis. A wonderful atmosphere & a great place for a special dinner. Would definitely go back!
I loved my experience there! My friend & I & massively gluten intolerant, & the waitress Elizabeth was well aware of what food was safe & not even for the special menu. The food was absolutely amazing, I can't wait to go back!! This was one of my greatest experience in a long time!
Kyo was already a great spot, but Emma behind the bar made the night. She recommended the Hitachino Nest beer, which instantly became my new favourite - smooth, unique, & the perfect pairing with the food. Great atmosphere, great sushi, & the kind of service that actually makes you want to come back. Ask for Emma's recommendation & trust it.
Had a great experience at Kyo in Montreal. The food was fresh, flavorful, & beautifully presented. The atmosphere was cozy & welcoming, & the staff were incredibly friendly. A special thank you to Margaux for the excellent service - attentive, kind, & made the evening even more enjoyable. Definitely a spot worth visiting for great Japanese food & a warm dining experience!
