Kyo Bar Japonais offers a lively, stylish atmosphere in Old Montreal where guests enjoy fresh, authentic Japanese dishes that are beautifully presented and full of flavor. The menu runs from sashimi and nigiri to wagyu gyoza, takoyaki and generous bowls, with many dishes praised for balance and quality and tasting menus that showcase the kitchen's skill. Service is widely appreciated for its friendliness and knowledge, with staff guiding guests through dishes and drink pairings and handling dietary needs with care. While prices can be high, the overall experience is memorable and the restaurant is ideal for celebrations or a special night out, with reservations recommended on busy nights.
The cocktails, mocktails & food are all great. We loved the 10 pc chef's sashimi, 10 pc chef's maki, vegetarian spring rolls, & particularly the tataki sake. The matcha colada, Taiyo, fleur du Kyo, & eclat rose were all delicious as well. They were easily able to accommodate a gluten allergy. Service was good.
Unbelievable food, service, & atmosphere. I was attending a conference in Montreal & happened upon this restaurant & I was very grateful that I did. One of the best food experiences I have ever had! I deferred the food recommendations to Kathy & she did not disappoint with both her selections & service.
The first recommendation was the Gindara Saikyo Yaki, which was absolutely outstanding. I would visit Montreal from Ohio just to eat this dish.
Next was the Unagi roll… also outstanding. Packed with lots of ginger on the side, which I appreciate.
Last was the Tataki Maguro. Amazing. You absolutely have to try it. Perfect amount of spicy & crunchy, packed with flavor.
I am very grateful to have happened upon Kyo. I cannot recommend it highly enough. My compliments to the chef & the entire team for an incredible experience. Thank you for your care in cultivating such incredible dishes in a fun, enjoyable environment. & a special thank you to Kathy who hit a home run with her suggestions!

Probably the best sushi iv'e had (Unagi Roll)
Sat at the bar & was served by the bartender Tony, super nice guy & great conversation. Definitely recommend this place!
I highly recommend! There's a lot of variety & interesting tastes, the'yuhi roll' was by far my favorite. Not only was the food & ambiance very pleasant, but the service was fantastic too, thank you to our server Kathy for giving us an amazing night!
A great restaurant with some fantastic dishes & beers! Ed, Jacob, & Jesse all served us throughout the night & they were fantastic to speak to as they provided great recommendations for drink & food, along with great conversation.
The beers being opened tableside & poured was a level of service I haven't experienced in quite some time from a restaurant. It was greatly appreciated. Being a vegetarian, Jacob recommended the Yami Yami roll that was one of the best sushi dishes I have ever had, hands down. The spicy edamame, miso soup, & vegetarian dumplings were all amazing choices as well. They weren't overfilling or overpowering in quantity & seasoning, respectively.
The Hitachino beers were all so good & a great way to compliment the dishes if you enjoy beer with distinct flavor profiles. Normally, I'm only used to Sapporo as my home province has very little offering in the way of Japanese beer. The Hito White, Lager, Damidami, & Red Rice were all so unique but complimentary to the food. The taste was quite noticeable but subtle at the same time; each one was in its own way fantastic. I cannot emphasize enough how well they paired with the food that was served. I truly respect a restaurant that can elevate the experience by pairing drinks so effectively with the food.
The entire restaurant is beautifully laid out. It felt like the prohibition met rustic-modern, & had a baby. It really provided a wonderful atmosphere to spend the evening so close to attractions like the Notre Dame Cathedral & La Grande Roue!

Overall a very enjoyable time here. The food was priced well & we were able to try a lot of different things. Some of the Maki rolls were just so so in terms of flavour, but all of the fish seemed really fresh. Our server was really friendly & checked in with us frequently despite how busy it was that evening. The only negative thing of note is that they initially had us seated right near the front door before we asked to move. People were trying to squeeze behind us & it was pretty cold... I'd just consider removing this table of I were the restaurant .
Nice experience at Kyo. Had dinner & tried a few different dishes. Sashimi was fresh, the rolls were creative. Agedashi tofu was a little too oily but still good. Our waiter was nice & professional.
Yakiudon was soaked in sauce & way too salty. Chief choice sushi was just bunch of Japanese American fusion rolls. Grilled pork belly is more like extra salty Chinese hong shao rou. Oyster tastes nothing but fishy.
Karaage was on point though. Not the best I've had but was cooked the way it should be.
Not much food option for kids as most dishes are spicy.
Such a cute ambiance, the blue fin tuna tataki & the fish in the rainbow roll were super fresh! This place is worth a try & I'd highly recommend a reservation if you go on a busy night

The staff was lovely & attentive yet super busy like all places. We did not mind the wait as we were seated outside, for our check & had plenty of hot jasmine tea (delish) & our bellies & palates were joyfully content.
The menu was amazing & the choices plentiful.
The sake flight was superb & I would encourage all to sample this delight.
The orchestration of staff was so nice. They bring you dish after dish & are all professional & knowledgeable.
Montreal humans are the best in the world. We loved every dish, roll, miso soup & will return everyone we go to Montreal.
Ps; make a reservation on open table.
Had a great experience at this restaurant; nigiri & rolls were perfect, drinks were delicious & our server Annikat was polite, attentive & very professional. Would definitely return again!
A fun & cozy izakaya bar. The kaarage chicken was an absolute winner. Crispy, crunchy, moist inside, & has a delightful slightly spicy warmth. Perfectly done japanese fried chicken that pairs well with Asahi beer. The gyozas weren't so perfect, drowning in a Thai sweet hot sauce. The curry chicken sauce was flavorful & popping but the chicken was was ordinary, slightly over cooked, there wasnt anything to dip into the curry sauce so we ordered a bowl of rice to accompany. The sushi was surprisingly good. We ordered califonia rolls, & it arrived with sweet tamago, unexpected & yet delightful sweet touch. We also ordered a rainbow roll, that was also good.
This was some of the best sushi we've had in recent memory. We got the Haru roll (pictured) as well as their spring roll & rainbow roll & wow it was good. The rice was super soft. The fish tasted super fresh & melted in your mouth. I thought this was very reasonably priced as well. We would come back in a heartbeat.

Food was good & service at the bar was great. I had the spicy tuna roll & shiitake mushroom dish & liked both! Paired really nicely with a glass of Sancerre.
Great spot!
Super fresh; try the chef's sushi- its got a great value, you get a mix of some really great/creative rolls! Wagyu gyozo were also great & come in a delicious thai sauce!
Amazing place. My daughter has to be GF & they were very accommodating. Enter side of the menu could all be made GF.
A bit loud inside but, that was because it was packed.
Service was amazing & all of the food was delicious. Had one of the sushi specials & the tuna spring roll. Completely full after & flavors were spot on.
