Kyo Bar Japonais is praised for fresh, beautifully presented sushi and a wide range of dishes from sashimi to wagyu and takoyaki, with flavors described as vibrant and well balanced. The vibe is warm and stylish in Old Montreal, blending intimate ambiance for dates with a lively energy that makes evenings feel special. Service consistently earns praise for being attentive and knowledgeable, with staff guiding guests through the menu and helping with sake and cocktail pairings. Many diners describe occasions from Valentine’s nights to anniversaries as memorable, thanks to thoughtful touches and smooth pacing. While the quality and atmosphere shine, some guests mention the price and portions as high and a few experiences of crowding or slower service on peak nights. Overall Kyo Bar Japonais is regarded as a standout choice in Montreal for sushi and Japanese dining, offering reliable excellence and a festive, refined experience.
I had the Gourmand special & thoroughly enjoyed it. A prix fixe meal, it included an appetizer, soup, & two mains (one grilled entree & one sashimi/sushi entree). The food was superb, flavourful, & while not an overly large amount of food, it was very satisfying. The menu had an extensive selection of standard izakaya entrees as well as sashimi/sushi offerings.
The service was attentive, the staff were friendly, & the food came promptly but not too soon. Overall, I found no fault with reservation. I would strongly recommend a reservation though as the place really filled fast after about 7:00 PM.

Probably the best sushi iv'e had (Unagi Roll)
Sat at the bar & was served by the bartender Tony, super nice guy & great conversation. Definitely recommend this place!
We got the 30 piece Maki chefs special, & the calamari for food, & a Kyoto Fizz, & Taiyo. We loved everything. Both of us got to try all of the sushi, & there were no misses. The sushi was fantastic, a large variety, of tuna, salmon, cucumber, crab, & shrimp with avocado, seaweed, rice, & more. The calamari was amazing too, perfectly crispy & fried without too much. It had a deep, exquisite flavor too. The drinks were the'worst part' but they were still good. Just expensive, as is typical for cocktails though. Our server, who's name we missed, was great too. We discussed things to do in Montreal, the jazz fest, other restaurants we'd recently visited, & more. His love for Montreal & the food scene here was evident & reflects great on Kyo too. Overall, it was a great great time

A great restaurant with some fantastic dishes & beers! Ed, Jacob, & Jesse all served us throughout the night & they were fantastic to speak to as they provided great recommendations for drink & food, along with great conversation.
The beers being opened tableside & poured was a level of service I haven't experienced in quite some time from a restaurant. It was greatly appreciated. Being a vegetarian, Jacob recommended the Yami Yami roll that was one of the best sushi dishes I have ever had, hands down. The spicy edamame, miso soup, & vegetarian dumplings were all amazing choices as well. They weren't overfilling or overpowering in quantity & seasoning, respectively.
The Hitachino beers were all so good & a great way to compliment the dishes if you enjoy beer with distinct flavor profiles. Normally, I'm only used to Sapporo as my home province has very little offering in the way of Japanese beer. The Hito White, Lager, Damidami, & Red Rice were all so unique but complimentary to the food. The taste was quite noticeable but subtle at the same time; each one was in its own way fantastic. I cannot emphasize enough how well they paired with the food that was served. I truly respect a restaurant that can elevate the experience by pairing drinks so effectively with the food.
The entire restaurant is beautifully laid out. It felt like the prohibition met rustic-modern, & had a baby. It really provided a wonderful atmosphere to spend the evening so close to attractions like the Notre Dame Cathedral & La Grande Roue!
Very very bad quality sushi, I eat sushi throughout Montreal, & I think this one was the worst. They overcharged & gave very bad quality fish. Very disappointing.
Kyo bar Japanese is among the highest-rated sushi restaurants in Montreal. However, personally, I found the sushi extremely bland & did not enjoy the food at all.
The service, on the other hand, was impeccable. I'm not sure if it was an off day, but based on my experience, the sushi really did not meet my expectations.

The service was extremely slow for a 3pm. I asked for no wasabi & I had wasabi on my plate. They forgot our miso soups so the soup arrived cold. We had to ask twice for soy sauce at a Japanese restaurant & we waited a while to get served. The sushi quality was mediocre.
I love dining out in Montreal. I think it's my favourite Canadian city for its dining scene. I can see why this place is so popular: really amazing location in a vibrant area, cool atmosphere, very personable & professional staff, always poppin with people. It is the cool place to be.
It has lots of great Japanese dishes. The noodle dishes were great, the wagyu beef dumplings were some of the best dumplings I've ever had. The desserts were outstanding.
But honestly I've tried a lot of sushi all over North America & the sushi here is very average. It was by no means the highlight of the meal.
But nonetheless, we enjoyed our evening & meal very much.
Note: I dined here July 11, 2025. This is a late review.
The transition between Elizabeth to Tristan was like God serving me the best plate of sushi I ever had, & then Jesus coming down to serve me another plate of sushi that shocked me to my core. Both servers made the experience amazing & I cannot recommend it enough!
