The food was very flavorful, I ordered the degustation menu which gave me a chance to try numerous of their dishes at once, highly recommend !
Abhi runs a wonderful restaurant. The fact that the generous menu is all vegan makes it a treat to visit with my vegan friends. A variety of Indian dishes across all regions are offered (great for foodies), the music & decor are welcoming & relaxing, & Abhi is extremely passionate about serving great food. Looking forward to returning!
Tula was an absolute delight. The restaurant opens for dinner at 5pm & we got there between 5:15 & 5:30; we were the first patrons. The restaurant was packed by 6:30 & we also saw many take out orders. We learned later that the owner & chef/menu creator himself follows a gluten free & vegan diet. This made sense as the menu was 100% vegan & 99% gluten free.
We started with masala chai, which hit the spot after a long day. The chai was served in a little matki (clay pot) & was aromatic.
For our appetizer we ordered the ragda patties, a street food. It was served in a small copper skillet. The dish was made very well with authentic flavors throughout. The potato patties were topped with the ragda (chickpea gravy) & garnished with sev (thin fried crispy noodles made from gram flour) & the traditional green/coriander & sweet/tamrind chutneys. Every bite had flavor. It's a big dish & perfect to share.
For our entree we split two dishes. We ordered the tofu tikka masala & jeera aloo mutter with two rotis (1 regular & 1 gluten free). The tofu tikka masala was seriously comforting. The dish tasted like it was homemade, was packed with flavor from simple ingredients & earthy spices. The jeera aloo mutter is a dry dish & mild. For us it worked well to use the gravy from the tofu tikka masala with the jeera aloo mutter. A simple dish, but very comforting. We were thoroughly impressed with the GF roti! The texture & taste were exactly like regular wheat roti…compliments to the chef for nailing it!
& finally for dessert we ordered what Chef Abhishek called a beautiful choice. The gulkand panna cotta. The flavors of this dessert are inspired by paan. Oh my god, this dessert really was insane. It captured the flavors & textures of paan without being overly bearing on either. The shredded coconut atop the panna cotta was'the icing on the cake.'
We chatted with Chef Abhishek to learn more about his inspiration & compliment him on his restaurant & menu. We learned that Tula means Balance in Sanskrit. He took everyone's orders & would take time to talk to all patrons.
This was an absolute gem. Chef Abhishek also shared his thoughts & execution for lunch/brunch. We wish we could have come back the following day to try out the lunch thali, which looks very unique/creative.
Was at Montreal during the weekend & went to Tula. It felt like home cooked food. Abhishek takes time to talk to his clients & explain the dishes. Each one is better than the other & you want to try all of them. From the biryani, Butter chicken to the Thali there is something for everyone. I had the brunch Thali & went next day for the biryani. Was simply amazing & I will go back for sure. There are few restaurants that cater to gluten free & this one has most options. I still have the taste of the delicious food
A great dining experience-super friendly, personal service that made us feel really welcome, & the food was both healthy & really tasty. The menu is full of unique, creative dishes you don't see everywhere, & everything felt fresh & thoughtfully made. You can tell there's real care & passion behind it all. Definitely a spot we'll be coming back to!
Amazing experience trying indian food. The atmosphere is lovely & decorated nicely. The food is well balanced. You can ordered the menu that come with small dishes so you can try many things. The Tigga masala is super good. Love it. Thank you for Abi for taking a good care of every customer & giving the time to explain the food. We were absolutely enjoy the meal.
TULA translates to'Balanced' & that's exactly what this restaurant is all about. An extraordinary culinary experience - five stars all the way!! Such homely preparation, felt light yet tasty. Highly recommended for wholesome & scrumptious food lovers!
Food:
This isn't your typical Indian restaurant serving the usual paneer, butter naan & Jira rice. If that's what you're after, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you're seeking something truly unique, this place delivers in every way. The menu is thoughtfully curated, reflecting genuine passion & care in every dish. We liked it so much that we ate there 3 times during our 3 day stay in Montreal. Here are the things we tried & absolutely loved. I normally like to rank dishes but all dishes came #1.
- Koshimbir - a refreshing salad
- Grandma's Special Curry - reminded me of a version of avial
- Chapati - very home made feel
- Ragda Patties - yummy chat
- Tomato Soup - so good, my daughter loved it
- Gulkand Panna Cotta
- lunch thali - comes with 4 curries, 1 salad, rice, roti & dessert.
- jackfruit biriyani - this was out of the world.
- Burger - crispy & delicious
- Bombay sandwich - we made this to go & ate it after about 8 hours & it was scrumptious
- Weekend Brunch Thali - pongal, sambhar, chutney, desset. I dont know how he gets such diverse food SO right
- Lentil idlis - they had shredded carrots & green beans. So thoughtful about making healthy food.
- Ragi dosa - this is not in the menu but the owner surprised us with it. SO good.
- Mango lassi - tasted even better than the dairy mango lassi. This was made with coconut milk yogurt that they make it themselves. I mean talk about the incredible amount of detail & care poured into creating it.
- Hibiscus & ginger drink -
- Chai - this came with the cutest sugar container on the side (see picture). Owner said he got them Bali when he was travelling.
Host, Service & Place:
Exceptional service & hospitality! We arrived about 30 minutes before closing, yet were welcomed with genuine kindness. There was no rush - we were encouraged to take our time exploring the menu. The host, Abhishek, patiently walked us through each item, clearly passionate about the food & the experience he offers. What stood out most was - he even recommended other restaurants in town that he personally likes. How often do you see a restaurant owner do that? It was clear he is not running the business just for the money. Once we placed our order, the food arrived promptly & was absolutely delightful. It is a beautiful, boutique restaurant. The interior is beautifully designed with tasteful decor that creates a calming & inviting ambiance.
Overall, a great experience.
If you're vegan & gluten-free, this restaurant is a wonderland. You can eat every single thing on the menu except for the French fries. I & my companions had the tasting menu, which included eight small tastes, each better than the last. Mine came with gluten-free chapati, which was delicious. The dishes included a tofu curry, a raita-inspired stew, a black-eyed pea dish, salad, mixed vegetables, pappadam, & the most luscious sweet potato cardamom dessert. I loved every bite. My non-vegan, gluten-eating companions also adored it. The service was gracious, helpful, & warm. We're definitely going back!
TULA is 100% authentic & sublime. Made for us by us. This is truly one of the best vegan restaurants & the absolute best Indian restaurant in the city serving honest, innovative & exciting dishes that are healthful & true to the sophisticated compendium of ancient recipes. For those of you who know… you just know. For many thousands of years Tamil culinary customs & ancient traditions have scientifically researched, tested, & prescribed the healthiest food combinations of ingredients & perfected recipes. The idli is a must try. The idli may be one of the best I've ever tasted & I've had idli in Tamil Nadu & Rishikesh; it is fermented properly & steamed to perfection & served with a sumptuous sambar & chutney. It truly is the breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner of champions. The lunch thali is divine; the palak paneer is delicious, the salad is a bright & fresh delight, the dal is perfect, the rice is steamed to perfection with jeera, the aloo is amazing, & the payasam is absolutely luscious & lightly sweetened allowing the natural flavours to shine. The kulhad masala chai (specially requested with jaggery) is so delicious that I ordered a second one! The mango lassi is also amazing. TULA is such a welcomed & warm addition to the vegan & Indian selection of restaurants in the city. Without a doubt TULA is one of the best vegan & Indian restaurants I've ever had the pleasure of visiting anywhere in the entire world. This is world class & sophisticated cuisine whilst also being down-to-earth healthy home-cooking. Enjoy your meal! Peace & love & thanks to the folks at TULA for an amazing meal. I've been craving another visit ever since so I'm looking forward to their dinner menu next.
The first time I came here I didn't realize they hadn't opened yet & I had to leave soon after but I was greeted warmly by the worker or owner. They were so passionate, humble & kind & encouraged me to come back another time. I haven't had the chance yet but I was craving good & healthy restaurant food while stuck at home & had a feeling they would be an ethical business that doesn't use plastic. I assumed correctly, yay! so I just ordered 5 dishes with chapatis off skip the dishes that came in paper/bagasse packaging. Everything was impressive but the pindi cholle, tikka masala & lasooni dhaniya & chapatis were sooo amazing ! The other two dishes (vegan butter chicken, tofu achari) were great but I would recommend the other ones more. Hope I'll be able to get a taste of the chill & joyful restaurant environment sometime soon while trying more menu items because there are still so many. I'd definitely get delivery again too 🥡
Update: finally ate in resto & it was a vibe. Busy & slow but the owner gave me a chai tea & his kind service to make up for it. I had the vegan chicken tikka masala & the elderberry cucumber pineapple cocktail
I returned on a weekend for the brunch menu & it was divine. The owner puts so much love into the cooking & explaining the dishes. The vibe was peaceful. Here's what's on the plate : Porridge = millets & lentils & eaten with fresh coconut sauce (yellow), lentil stew with lots of veggies, Tofu scramble, Black chickpea salad, Potatoes boiled & seasoned, Sweet potato porridge, Crepes made with lentil flour, spinach & herbs & you eat that with tamarind sauce 🤍❤?
The plant based chicken veggie ginger stir fry is sooo delicious
Mango lassi too. Helped with the spice of the chili chicken which is really spicy beware!
I came back on a weekday to try the vegan chicken wrap. They give the option of mild or spicy & if you choose mild they use butter chicken. It was wrapped well so you could take it to go if you want & comes with sauces. The chapati used for the wrap was soft & went well with it.
We had an incredible dining experience that brought back so many memories of home. The jackfruit biryani was absolutely mind-blowing-easily the best biryani we've had in Montreal! The coconut curry was bursting with flavor & warmth-it tasted just like something made in a home kitchen, full of love & nostalgia.
A special shout-out to Abhishek, who was an exceptional host. Despite us arriving just 30 minutes before closing, he welcomed us with a big smile & made sure we felt right at home. He suggested the best dishes that could still be freshly prepared, & everything exceeded our expectations.
Highly recommended for anyone craving truly authentic Indian flavors. We're already looking forward to our next visit!
I really wanted to rate 1 star just to get the epic replies from the hilarious person behind TULA's Google account, but I'll have to give it an honest 5 stars review. We ordered for the first time tonight (after reading all the 1 star reviews), & although the dishes are pricey on DoorDash, TULA did not cut any corners. The spices are plentiful & the dishes are satisfying; some serious comfort food! The portions are filling, the rice is prepared perfectly. We loved the butter chicken, grandma's coconut curry, tofu bhurjee & tofu koliwada (the 6 pieces were quite large & the breading is nicely spiced). We loved all 4 dishes equally. The accompanying mint & tamarind chutneys were delicious (next time, I would extra chutneys since the tofu koliwada pieces are so generous). We are definitely ordering again.
i enjoyed my first visit to Tula & I can't wait to try everything on the menu. The dishes are explained perfectly in the menu & are not what is typically listed in an Indian restaurant. Everything was so flavourful & not oily. The portions were very generous & we were offered takeout boxes to put the remainder in for another wonderful meal.
Hi everyone, I'm leaving a review here to encourage you to go explore the sunny dishes of Tula restaurant, a gem of an Indian Vegan restaurant on Saint Laurent right above Fairmount. I didn't know quite what to expect, & was enchanted by all of the depth of flavor, texture & deliciousness of all the dishes we tried.
Definitely try the Koshimbir salad, like a loaded coleslaw with a twist & a medley of tangy flavours & colours; cabbage, carrot, greens, pomegranates, mung beans/lentils, walnuts & a few edible flowers on top. So pretty & surprisingly hearty.
The vegan Tikka Masala with plant based'chicken' was so satisfying in flavor, colour & texture who would've known it was vegan. Just a delight in every bite.
Do not miss Grandma's Special Coconut Curry. It has everything in it to satisfy all of your taste buds, with beautiful fresh bright green peas, potatoes, plant-based protein & a golden yellow colour that warms your soul & leaves it glowing.
The Black Chickpea & Black-Eyed Pea Ghassi had just the right amount of warmth & was so tasty. So happy to have tried this unique dish. The Jeera rice was a perfect balance of cumin seeds & cilantro & the Chapatis were warm, soft & pillowy, so tasty & smelled good.. What is their secret?
Top it off with a tall glass of hibiscus & ginger, & you're good to go. The food was so clean, thoughtful, considered, packed some huge flavours & was wildly satisfying. Special thanks to Priyanka & Brenda for being such lovely hosts & for offering a fun & cohesive service. I can't wait to come back again to try more. Yay Tula!
Came here during a trip. Lovely service in both English & en Français. We ordered 3 dishes (a couple of curries & a spinach dish), all were fantastic. Price including drinks was quite reasonable.
I absolutely love the server (male without hair). He takes time to explain the dishes. Food is great & the drinks are good too.
Finally a really healthy Indian resto that is tasty & really vegetarian. They are super accommodating with gluten free people too as their dishes are naturally gluten free & have gluten free chapati which is super rare. Highly recommend.
Delicious plant based / vegan dishes. Healthy & so flavorful. The mocktails were very tasty & the service was on point.
This restaurant serves very good vegan food. Thé owner & all the staff are really nice & welcoming. I had the Tali & one after the other the dishes were very tasty. I am very pleased to have stopped to eat at this Small restaurant (Seats 40 people) Thank you very mis h for your kindness
The dishes have very good & unique flavours. We enjoyed the various recommendations from the lunch menu. The drinks were also excellent. Definitely a great spot!!
