Review Summary

Cadet offers a highly regarded dining experience in Montreal, characterized by its creative, tapas-style menu that features well-executed dishes with global inspirations and balanced flavors. Many diners praise the quality of the food, particularly the black cod and focaccia, noting the innovative and seasonal approach to ingredients. While the ambiance is generally described as lively, stylish, and perfect for dates or sharing with groups, some visitors have noted that the space can become quite loud. Service quality is often highlighted as professional, friendly, and attentive, though there are inconsistent reports regarding speed and responsiveness, and some guests find the portion sizes small relative to the price.

The food was amazing. Everything we tried was spectacular. We had the cod, calamari, steak & potatoes, cheesecake & every one of those dishes was packed with flavor & cooked perfectly.
Even the salads, which were very good on their own, felt a little underwhelming compared to the hot dishes just because everything else was that outstanding.
My only comment is that dishes are so rich & intensely flavorful that, after a while, I found myself wishing there was something more neutral, like bread or rice, to balance everything out. Otherwise, your taste buds are getting hit from every direction all at once.
That said, the food was absolutely delicious, & I'd happily come back.

Cadet is one of my absolute favorite restaurants in Montreal. It's the kind of place that keeps you coming back because every meal feels exciting, thoughtful, & effortlessly delicious.

The atmosphere is cozy, vibrant, & intimate, making it perfect for a date night or an evening with friends. The staff are incredibly welcoming & knowledgeable, always offering great recommendations & making the experience feel personal.

The sharing plates are creative, beautifully presented, & packed with flavor. Every dish showcases seasonal ingredients & a level of craftsmanship that makes each bite memorable. It's the perfect place to explore new flavors while enjoying a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere.

Cadet has mastered the balance between exceptional food, outstanding service, & a fun dining experience. It's one of those rare restaurants that consistently exceeds expectations, & I recommend it to anyone looking for one of the best dining experiences Montreal has to offer. Thank you

The food was pretty average, there weren't any particularly new or distinctive flavors. The ingredient combinations in each dish felt quite common, & the flavors themselves didn't seem especially high quality. One of the dishes we ordered was their signature fried seabass, & its stomach was stuffed with a vegetable mixture that tasted nearly rotten. The service also was at a very medium level. The servers need better training.

One of my favorite meals - we were blown away by all the flavors & textures. We ordered the oysters, focaccia, asparagus (amazing!!) & lamb. Our server helped us narrow down the right wine selection as well. Every bite up until dessert was perfection. What a great spot!

The whole time my husband & I were there we had very poor service. It took more than 15 minutes for us to have someone take our order. From there once we received the food roughly 20 minutes later the waiter & waitress did not check in on us once. Never came to ask how we are enjoying the meal or if they can bring us anything. Once we finished our meals the servers never once came by to clear our table & remove the dishes. They never offered us a dessert menu & never approached us. This is the worst service I have ever received, especially for a Michelin star restaurant. We had to wave down a waiter to get a bill, otherwise it seems like no one would've came & ask or check.
The food was mediocre at best, we had the chicken wings to share which was decent. But my husband had the steak & it was not very good, he noted it was cooked strangely & it was chewy. The flavors did not make sense with chutney & Szechuan. & I had the market price fish & it was tasty at the time but later that night I had been glued to the toilet. The whole time I've been at Montreal & eaten all sorts of food this is the only place that made me feel sick physically after.
I also noticed that after my husband & I left that there was a coat check at the front, something nobody offered us? We noticed that the other tables received proper service having servers checking in on them regularly. & we were practically ignored the entire time we were at the restaurant. We were going to get a dessert but no one came to check on us for more than 20 minutes that we just wanted to leave.
Either way this is the worst service I've received anywhere, nonetheless a Michelin star restaurant. The food was mediocre, I will never come back to this restaurant & will never recommend anyone to come here.

We had a great dining experience at Cadet. The staff was friendly & very good about my allergies. All the dishes we tried were delicious. The standout dishes for me were the risotto & the lamb-both well-executed & full of flavor. Would definitely go back.

The food is superior! Definitely one of the best French restaurants in Montreal.

- Fried sea bass: the fish is fried but not oily with a very special taste. The vegetables in the dish is also very tasty. The sauce is nice & creative

- Black cod: nice & soft texture with great sauce

- Beef striploin: this is medium rare but somehow I felt that it's not tender enough

- Eggplant: newly added to the menu. Very special taste with some minced plum (fried)

- Oyster mushroom: always a fan of mushroom. & this combines with vegs & slices of pears to bring out the fresh flavor

- Beef tartare: fresh beef & well cooked mushroom

Not much to complain here. Just one note that the main courses come to the table really slow. After we finished the appetizers, it took them about half an hour to bring the main courses, which is a bit disappointing. Nonetheless it's a great experience & I will definitely revisit this place.

The flavors were quite creative - definitely a fusion style that draws from different Asian cuisines. For example, the fried sea bass reminded me of Yunnan China-style grilled fish with a rich, flavorful sauce. The hamachi had a fresh, clean profile with elements like sashimi, shredded daikon, & citrus zest, very much inspired by Japanese cuisine. The risotto, on the other hand, leaned more toward Middle Eastern flavors, with yogurt & aromatic spices.

Each dish came with a surprising twist & thoughtful flavor combination. That said, portions were quite small & the space felt a bit cramped.

Exceptional Tapas & Wine Pairings at Cadet - A Must in Montreal

Located on Saint-Laurent Boulevard in the heart of Montreal's Quartier des Spectacles, Cadet is a vibrant & stylish restaurant that has earned its place among the Michelin-recommended gems of the city. The atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between casual & chic, making it ideal for a night out with friends or a pre-show dinner.

The menu features a variety of refined tapas-style plates designed for sharing. The standout for us was the black cod (morue charbonnière)-incredibly tender, beautifully caramelized, & full of delicate flavor. Each dish we tried was thoughtfully presented, with excellent attention to balance & texture.

One of the highlights of the experience was the wine pairing. The selections were expertly matched to each course, enhancing the flavors without overpowering them. It's clear that great care goes into curating both the food & beverage offerings.

For dessert, the chocolate, caramel, & banana tart was simply unforgettable-rich & indulgent without being too heavy.

The service was warm, knowledgeable, & genuinely welcoming. The staff made us feel right at home while guiding us through the menu.

In short, Cadet delivers a polished & memorable dining experience. Highly recommended for food lovers visiting Montreal.
