At 316 avenue du Mont-Royal Est, we've been loving the kouing-amann for over 30 years.
A true neighborhood café, the owner and employees work together to offer gourmet pastries (made with passion!), fresh sandwiches and the famous kouing-amann.
Let yourself be tempted by a moment of greed in a warm family atmosphere that has lasted for nearly three decades.

Their kouign-amann is so buttery but not overly sweet. Their apple puff pastries, their pain au chocolat, their croissants (cheese croissants, almond croissants, plain croissants) are all amazing, classic textbook viennoiserie tradition. Their hot chocolate is not overly sweet, which goes very well with a slice of warm kouign-amann on a cold winter day. The place is near Mont-Royal station. It has this lovely vibe of old historic Montreal store in the inside, from the decor to the music they play. There are only two small tables (2-3 chairs per table), but the pastries get sold so steadily that, whenever I visit, the pastries are always warm & fresh of the oven. I've never able to take a picture because I forget everything except eating when I hold their pastries.
Brought back from Montreal, their most famous item is the kouign-amann, a caramelized butter pastry. I purchased a 6-inch one. Heating it briefly in the microwave enhances the texture remarkably. The exterior remains crispy due to the caramelization, while the interior is soft & buttery, resembling a cross between cake & bread. It's sweet & aromatic, perfect to pair with a cup of coffee.
Wow! The best Kouign Amann I have tasted! I have tried the ones in Paris & in a very popular Pastiserrie along St Germain & I found them very rich & sweet & not as soft as the one I tasted here! That was why when I went back to Paris couple times after, I never bothered to taste them again. The one's here were very moist & soft & not that sweet! I was very full when we came in to try some & it was so good I finished one slice & decided to buy the grand one to take back home to Toronto! The lady serving was very nice as well!! Now I am wishing I bought two grand ones!
Rich, buttery, the right amount of sweet - everything you need & want a pastry to be, the kouing amann is it. This is a must visit.
The kouing amann cake was amazing! Buttery, sweet, chewy, bouncy, & slightly crisp on the outside. Heaven
