Au Kouing-Amann Montreal Restaurant: Menu, Reviews & Reserve (2026)
Desserts & SweetsPastriesCaféSandwiches

At 316 avenue du Mont-Royal Est, we've been loving the kouing-amann for over 30 years.

A true neighborhood café, the owner and employees work together to offer gourmet pastries (made with passion!), fresh sandwiches and the famous kouing-amann.

Let yourself be tempted by a moment of greed in a warm family atmosphere that has lasted for nearly three decades.

Review Summary

Au Kouing-Amann earns widespread praise for its namesake pastry, with the kouign amann described as perfectly caramelized on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth soft and buttery inside, often hailed as one of the best pastries in Montreal. The menu also shines with croissants and other flaky specialties, though the star remains the signature treat, and warm service plus a cozy, compact setting are frequently noted. Busy periods, small seating, and occasional limited hours are common caveats, but queues are seen as a sign of popularity and the wait is often deemed worth it. Overall, Au Kouing-Amann is described as a must visit for pastry lovers, delivering consistent flavor, authentic Breton influence, and a memorable bakery experience that locals and visitors alike would return to.

My favourite bakery in Montreal. Quaint, authentic, friendly.

The apple compote filled pastry is suoerbe along with an assortment of croissant flavours & Kings cake.

Only two to three tables & standing room if you are planning to eat inside.

Wonderful staff!

Unbelievable! Had this on our last day in Montréal, but should have had it first (to go back!). This was the best Kouing Amann I've ever had! Not absurdly sweet (as some places do). The cheese croissant was great too!!

Arrived 10 min before they closed before our flights back to Vancouver. The only 2 things they had left were their croissant (they are great in its own way, slightly on the salty side) & kouign-amann, shaped like a pancake, but layers & layers of buttery pastry. I didn't know what it was & asked for a slice. The first bite made me cursed so loud. The 2 staff laughed & told my friend I was not the first one to have a reaction like that. Had to ask for additional slice to bring back to my family. If you're travelling to Montreal & making a stop here, bring a container.

Thank you again for ending my trip on such a high note.

I'm a huge fan of bakeries, & this is hands down the best bakery I've ever been to.

During my stay in Montreal, I visited four highly reviewed bakeries, but none of them came close to this place. Everything we tried was incredibly fresh, delicate, & absolutely delicious. It was so good that we finished an entire box of baked goods in about five minutes-& immediately went back in to buy more.

The customer service was also excellent-friendly, welcoming, & efficient. The shop itself was very clean & well kept, which made the experience even better.

One thing to note is that the indoor seating area is quite limited, so I'd recommend planning for takeout rather than dining in. Also, be sure to double-check their opening days & hours-they're only open Wednesday through Saturday, & closed the rest of the week.

Highly recommend if you're looking for top-tier baked goods.

Recommended items: chocolate croissant, kouing amann, cheese croissant, chocolate milk bread.

If you're in Montreal & love pastries, you absolutely have to try Kouign-Amann!

Hands down, this was one of the best pastries I've ever had. The Kouign-amann is simply amazing - perfectly caramelized sugar on the outside with rich, buttery layers on the inside. Crispy, sweet, & melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

We also tried the croissant & the almond croissant, & both were outstanding. The almond croissant is a must-try - flaky, buttery, & generously filled, with sliced almonds on top adding the perfect crunch.

It's a small place & very busy, but that just shows how good it is. Totally worth the wait. A must-visit spot in Montreal for pastry lovers!

Finally made it here while they were open after many failed attempts over the years! I got the most coveted kouign aman, some butter croissants & a couple almond croissants. They weren't the best almond croissants I've ever had but they were okay. I did however love the butter croissants & the kouign aman as I could taste the deliciousness of butter minus the greasiness. Now I have to wait 4 days for them to reopen lol

One of Montreal's best bakeries. Known for their Kouing Amann, which is a baked good I first came across in the Breton region of France. Delicious, but not good for your waistline! Also fantastic croissants.

Their kouign amann has genuinely made me rethink the standard. Absolutely mindblown at how good it is here, even came back & bought a whole kouign amann to bring back to Toronto. Also had their croissant au fromage & it might've one of the best i've had as well. An absolute must when visiting Montreal.

I tried 4 other bakeries & consider this one to offer the best croissant Montreal. The rest of the pastries are amazing too!

The kouign amann is one of the best pastries we've ever had in our lives oh my god. Perfectly soft, sweet, & buttery. It's not overly sweet or greasy, genuinely excellent in every aspect. We also got the butter croissant which was yummy & had a great texture as well as a unique flavour profile - we suspect it may be due to the use of whipped butter? Very cozy atmosphere & service is extremely kind. Cannot wait to come back & eat as much of the kouign amann as possible loll!!

Kouing Amann, j'arrive !

Pâtisserie Au Kouing Amann is one of our favourite pastry shops in the city. They have the worst hours (closed Sunday to Tuesday) but their kouign amann are amazing.

Grabbed a kouign amann ($3.25) & croissant au fromage ($3.50). Flaky, delicious goodness. You won't find a better kouign amann!

Located right on Mont Royal Avenue - one of my favorite pedestrian streets in Montréal - this bakery was a standout discovery. I've had kouign-amann before (at O Petit Paris in Montréal & even Dominique Ansel's bakery in New York City), but the one here is by far the best I've ever tasted.

The pastry is baked in a large round, almost like a pie, then cut into wedges to serve. The texture is exactly what you want: incredibly crispy on the outside, soft & tender inside. You can order a single slice for $3.25 CAD, a small round (about 6 servings) for $18 CAD, or a large (about 12 servings) for $33 CAD.

The shop is open Wednesday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. - so plan to arrive early before they sell out. The woman at the counter was very friendly & spoke both English & French, which made ordering simple.

They also offer a few other pastries (pain au chocolat, cinnamon roll, berry tart, plain croissant), but trust me - you come here for the kouign-amann. It's outstanding, & I highly recommend making a stop if you're in Montréal.

You know you've found the right bakery when the air smells like buttery heaven. Most people seemed to go for for their croissants (& yes, they're fantastic), but it surprises me how often the kouign amann gets overlooked. Their medium-sized version (about 6-7 portions) is something I could happily devour all on my own. It's rich & buttery, yet never feels heavy. I've never been to Brittany, but I imagine this is about as close to the real thing.

Really excellent options, despite a small selection. The Kouing Amann is so good, feel like you could eat a small one to yourself. Also, the chocolate croissant is the best in the area. The workers are super nice & passionate about what they do here. Small seating options, but there's street seating (until mid-October)

I wasn't too interested in another bakery. But one bite of the kouign amann had my partner & I coming back multiple days in a row. I've never had a better dessert - they're like a cross between croissants & custard. Immaculate 👌🏼

Nice little place with this amazing Kouing Amman cake. Croissants were nice & made correctly (crispy & flaky, not bready & dry)
