At 316 avenue du Mont-Royal Est, we've been loving the kouing-amann for over 30 years.
A true neighborhood café, the owner and employees work together to offer gourmet pastries (made with passion!), fresh sandwiches and the famous kouing-amann.
Let yourself be tempted by a moment of greed in a warm family atmosphere that has lasted for nearly three decades.
Au Kouing-Amann is widely praised for its namesake pastry, a buttery, caramelized treat with a crispy crust and a soft, melt-in-your-mouth center, frequently described as the best Kouign Amann in Montreal, with croissants and almond croissants also highlighted; the shop is small and cozy, with limited seating and a tendency toward takeout, while the staff are consistently friendly and helpful; opening hours can be limited or vary by day, so planning ahead is advised; overall, reviews celebrate freshness, balance, and rich butter flavors, making Au Kouing-Amann a must-visit for pastry lovers in Montreal and often worth buying a whole Kouign Amann to take home.
I'm a huge fan of bakeries, & this is hands down the best bakery I've ever been to.
During my stay in Montreal, I visited four highly reviewed bakeries, but none of them came close to this place. Everything we tried was incredibly fresh, delicate, & absolutely delicious. It was so good that we finished an entire box of baked goods in about five minutes-& immediately went back in to buy more.
The customer service was also excellent-friendly, welcoming, & efficient. The shop itself was very clean & well kept, which made the experience even better.
One thing to note is that the indoor seating area is quite limited, so I'd recommend planning for takeout rather than dining in. Also, be sure to double-check their opening days & hours-they're only open Wednesday through Saturday, & closed the rest of the week.
Highly recommend if you're looking for top-tier baked goods.
the kouign amann was the most DIVINE, DELECTABLE little treat ever. it was soooo hot & fresh & warm JUST PERFECT ON A COLD MORNING. it had a chewy, sweet caramelized-sugary crust & a super soft, mushy, comforting doughy inside. the entire thing was just oozing with butteriness, & slightly oily - paired nicely with a cup of water. i kind of want to bring an entire full 12 portion pastry home .
Love the pastries here! Initially got the Almond crossaint & this raisin/orange pinwheel. The almond crossaint was freshly made & was the highlight for me! Realized that the bakery is specialized in making Kouign-amann [thus the name lol] so i ordered a slice. It was very yummy but a little too heavy for me! My boyfriend very much enjoyed it though! Should def make this a stop if you are travelling to Montreal!
Pâtisserie Au Kouing Amann is one of the most memorable bakeries we have ever visited, & it deserves every bit of a 5-star rating. If you love pastries, this place is an absolute must. The moment you walk in, the air is filled with the rich, buttery aroma of freshly baked goods, & you know you're in for something special.
We tried their famous kouign amann, & it was perfection - beautifully caramelized on the outside, flaky & tender inside, with just the right balance of sweetness & butter. It's one of those pastries you remember long after you've finished eating. We also sampled a few other treats, & everything was consistently fresh & full of flavor.
The bakery itself has a cozy, authentic feel, & the staff were warm, welcoming, & happy to help with suggestions. You can tell they take pride in what they make. It's not a huge space, but it feels like a little hidden gem tucked into the heart of Montreal.
This place alone is worth a detour if you're visiting the city. I would come back in a heartbeat & highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates top-quality pastries. Easily one of the best bakery experiences in Canada!
Kouign Amann anywhere is the best tasting, richest pastry in any form. Theirs is no exception. Never seen it in this large pie form. Buy a full one to take home. Their heating-up instructions worked great to return it to almost as good as fresh (& DEFINITELY still better than the many stale croissants we kept getting at other shops in Montreal).

Awesome place. Very affordable yet delicious fresh pastries. Some of my favorites are the croque monsieur, kouign amann, quiche, & the almond croissant. Definitely will stop by again when I'm in town.
First time visitor. Bright & dainty place. Truthfully I didn't order their specialty menu item. I went in for an Americano & a fresh Croissant. The croissant was flaky & just the right amount of chewy. There were only two tables & I felt a bit guilty taking up a table just for myself. So I took off a star just because it seems like a place where you grab & go your order. There is a lot of foot traffic & I over heard a lot of customers say that this was their favourite spot! I would go back & try their Kouign Amann. Next time!
Cafe Mocha was great, the baked goods were incredible, all the croissants were light, fluffy, & fresh, will forever be a stop when visiting Montreal. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
Cozy little bakery. The smell of butter once you enter is amazing. There is not much seating, & it gets filled up pretty quickly. We had a slice of kouing amann (butter cake), & I heard the angels sing. It was crispy on top but with a soft middle. Very fresh. I have to come back for the croissants &, of course, another slice of the kouing amann.

An absolute must if you are visiting Montreal! I love that each slice is relatively inexpensive. It's ultra delicious when fresh & hot! Not a place for seating though, so expect to takeaway. Only has 2 tables in the shop & outside is too hot in the summe
Just do yourself a favor & go get a slice of the legendary kouign Aman, you won't regret it. All the pastries tasted were freshly made & delicious & the owner was so kind. Highly recommend.
