If you're visiting Montreal & want a truly authentic local food experience, St-Viateur Bagel is an absolute must. This iconic spot has built a reputation that goes far beyond hype.

The moment you walk in, you're greeted by the comforting aroma of freshly baked bagels. What really sets this place apart is that the bagels are almost always warm-often straight out of the wood-fired oven. That warmth isn't just a detail; it completely transforms the experience. The outside has a slight crispness while the inside remains soft, chewy, & subtly sweet, thanks to the traditional honey-water boiling method.

Watching the bagels being made right in front of you adds to the charm. Whether you go for a classic sesame or poppy seed, or try something like cinnamon raisin, every bite tastes fresh & satisfying.

Pros:
- Consistently warm, fresh bagels straight from the oven
- Authentic Montreal-style bagels with a unique slightly sweet flavor
- Open 24/7, making it perfect for late-night cravings
- Affordable pricing for high-quality, handmade products
- A true local experience with visible traditional baking methods

Cons:
- No seating on this location, this is more of a grab-&-go spot
- Can get quite busy, especially during peak hours
- Cash-only at times
- Limited menu if you're looking for a full café-style experience

Overall, St-Viateur Bagel isn't just a place to eat-it's an experience. The combination of tradition, quality, & that signature warm bagel every time makes it unforgettable. If you're in Montreal, skipping this spot would honestly mean missing out on one of the city's most beloved culinary traditions.

This is definitely one of the best spot to go if you want to taste a Montreal Style bagel when in Montreal. Their bagels are really fresh & delicious! Highly recommended bagel shop!!

** Cash only, so bring it! There's an ATM but fees are higher than a bank ATM. ** Bagels are worth the trip! Try all the flavors - especially the Everything & Pretzel Salt bagels. Note: Montréal style bagels are thinner, denser & more flavorful - best eaten warm from the oven or toasted. At this flagship location, no seating inside, so pop over to a nearby coffee shop (recommend: Cafe Felice).

St-Viateur Bagel is a great place to enjoy authentic Montreal bagels at a good price. The bagels themselves are very good-fresh, flavorful, & exactly what you expect from such an iconic spot.

One interesting aspect is how the toppings work. They give you the bagel, & then you choose & buy whatever you want to put on it from the refrigerators next to the counter. You assemble it yourself. This setup has both pros & cons: it gives you flexibility & choice, but it may not be ideal if you're looking for a fully prepared bagel sandwich.

I also liked that they have a wide selection of souvenirs, which makes the visit more fun, especially for tourists. On top of that, the service was friendly & efficient.

Overall, it's a classic Montreal experience with good bagels, fair prices, & a unique self-serve style that many people will enjoy.

I ordered half a dozen bagels (assorted) as it was my first time trying Montreal style bagels! I wish I asked for their fresh bagels as it definitely made the difference. The fresh sesame bagel I got was pretty tasty (8/10) & I bought a small size of butter to try it out. This location was cash only so ensure you have cash in you - or use the ATM located near the entrance.

had the pleasure of trying the traditional bagel at St-Viateur Bagel, & I have to say it was incredible! The portion size is very generous - definitely filling enough for a hearty meal. The bagel itself was perfectly baked with that authentic Montreal-style texture: crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, & packed with flavor.

The price-performance ratio here is excellent. You get great quality for a very reasonable price, which makes it a must-visit spot for bagel lovers or anyone looking for an authentic Montreal experience.

On my first visit, we waited about 40 minutes in line, which might seem long, but the friendly atmosphere & the smell of fresh bagels baking made the wait enjoyable. We decided to eat inside, & the experience was wonderful - fresh, warm bagels served with great service.

The next day, we wanted to enjoy the same delicious bagels at home, so we ordered via Uber Eats. Even through delivery, the quality & taste didn't disappoint. It was almost as good as eating there!

The staff at St-Viateur Bagel were very kind & helpful during both visits, which made the experience even better. One thing to note: they only accept cash & debit cards, so be prepared for that. Credit cards are not accepted.

Overall, if you're ever in Montreal, St-Viateur Bagel is an absolute must. I'm already looking forward to my next visit & can't wait to enjoy these amazing bagels again

Yes, if you want the real McCoy of Montreal-style bagels, come here. The authenticity shines through & the pricing is reasonable considering their heralded status in town. I greatly enjoyed the product though being cash-only & not offering receipts makes me suspect they're money-launderers or tax-cheats 😜 please start accepting credit cards. I never carry cash.

Phenomenal bagels! As one of the original Montreal-style bagel shops, St. Viateur Bagel & Cafe is a must-see for folks who enjoy a good bagel (or really any carb). The bagels are served piping hot & have the slightly sweet flavor so core to the Montreal-style bagel. They're quite a bit lighter & airier vs. the New York-style bagel, which I appreciate, & they're great with a sandwich, cream cheese, or just on their own. I tried their sesame bagel, & it was completely covered in sesame seeds. It's also really fun that you can see their whole operation from the cash register -- the kitchen is totally open, so you can see the staff mix the batter, shape the bagels, & pop them in the oven.

Good Canadian style bagel. They are famous for sesame bagel. They do not have their own cream cheese. They only accept cash & Canadian debit cards

I found St. Viateur's bagels to be overrated. The hot & fresh poppy seed was not bad, & the cold sesame had a good flavor, but in general the cold bagels were hard & void of much flavor. I made this a central place to visit during my time in the city, & I definitely wouldn't next time. I don't know if I came on an off day, or if this style just falls far short of the NYC style. A reminder that it's cash only, & take-out only. My favorite aspect of the bakery is the quaint atmosphere, & you're not really able to enjoy it because of the nature of the line & it being take-out only.

The Montreal style bagel is glorified in this iconic Montreal bagel shop. For decades, St-aviateur bagel has been a great option for a cheap bite & to have the Montreal experience. Locals & tourists should try this iconic spot

A small store, the bagels were super fresh & delicious. We like Montreal style bagels' slightly sweet, less salty & more chewy nature. We enjoyed the bagels with the Tre Stelle cream cheese, a fantastic cream cheese of the Denmark. We withdrew cash at the ATM in their store when we saw "cash only".

Classic example of Montreal style bagels & my favourite place for bagels. Your order will always be fresh baked bagels as they are constantly baking batches but if you can time it right (or ask politely) you can get ones that are fresh from the wood baked oven. They have a few varieties (like blueberry) but the classics are poppy seed & sesame.

St-Viateur bagels is an overrated tourist trap Honestly do not get the hype. Like sure Montréal style bagels may be worth buying in a grocery store for their potentially unique style / flavour but this store is not worth it. First red flag for me is them being cash only. Now I tend to carry quite a bit of cash & prefer paying by cash many times - way more than the average person; & yet I was taken aback. & sure I get small businesses not wanting to pay potentially exorbitant credit card fees. But these guys ain't a small business - they are an overrated tourist trap. The cash only at this stage just to me screams money laundering & tax evasion (via undeclared income). Heck they don't even have a cash register. They were just scribbling stuff on a pad. Like if I was a CRA / RQ officer & I saw this I'd be calling for a complete audit immediately Second was the lack of service & rudeness. You'd think a bagel shop at the very least would butter it. But no, I asked for bagel with butter & the cashier, in a sarcastic tone said that I can buy (!!) butter (at inflated prices) & that "we don't make sandwiches here" They can't even do basic services of a bagel shop, instead relying on being a tourist trap. Finally, they clearly run an (show) assembly line where bagels are being made. But they are not seeking their fresh ones to customers that is for sure. The bagels did not taste fresh out of the oven at all, despite what talk & assembly line process will have you believe. It tasted meh & a bit stale to be honest

I had been waiting to try a Montreal bagel for a while & it didn't disappoint. I got a all dressed bagel with smoked salmon. They didn't go overboard with the capers or onions. Definitely different from a NY style bagel but very delicious. I appreciated the freshness & the slight smokiness of the bagel. Prices were reasonable & the staff were pretty skilled at getting people in & out, managing ordering, etc. I wasn't prepared for a cash-only type of place & they told me where I could find an ATM very easily across the street.

I converted so hard to the Montreal bagel. I am rationing my remaining bagels & considering being unfaithful to my local NY Style bagel shop & getting these shipped.
