The Rendang daging (coconut beef) is to die for, the Ayam goreng manis (fried chicken with fermented honey) will blow your mind, the Kajang panjang kluwek (green beans) is so delicious you won't stop eating... Yes it gets expensive if you have wine like we did, but just go for the food & you'll freak out!!
Came across this place while looking online for gluten free restaurant. As someone who is gluten free it was definitely worth the trip. Even for my boyfriend who was a gluten eater he enjoyed the experience. We had corn fritters & oyster mushrooms for appetizers & they were breaded & delicious. For mains we had beef ribs & Rendang which were both good. The beef ribs were to die for. Very delicious. For dessert we had the ice cream which I very much loved especially the citrus taste. My boyfriend enjoyed the black rice. The servers took time to speak to you & engage in conversation. Thanks from your Toronto friends!
Tried out Satu Lagi, the only Indonesian restaurant in town, for a weekend brunch. They have a spacious outdoor terrasse. Mains are $18.00 to $26.00.
- Matcha latte ($6.00)
- Kaya toast & onsen egg ($10.00) - not authentic according to my Singaporean friend
- Rendang eggs benedict ($26.00) - rendang was okay. Side salad wasn't satisfying
- Nasi lemak ($23.00) - tiny portion
- Pulau pain perdu ($22.00) - standard fare
Food was decent, got a little taste of everything. The chicken with hot sauce was fantastic, a great combination.
The meat in rendang was too shredded for my liking despite the strong taste of lemongrass & rendang flavor.
The vegetable was slightly underwhelming. This is probably due to the lack of wok fire.
The crème brûlée texture wasn't quite right, it was a little curdy. However, the taste was good.
Overall, a restaurant that provides a unique experience for Indonesian Malaysian food.
The food is absolutely phenomenal. Every dish was so flavourful & well prepared, & the courses were perfectly spaced out.
Starters: highly recommend the tempeh & beef skewers, the fried mushrooms, & the tofu.
Mains: the rendang & the green beans are a must. The sauce that the clam stir fry was prepared in is also superb. You have to get rice on the side (both types are great but the turmeric one is fantastic).
Special mention for the pandan crème brûlée (still thinking about a day later) & chili mutiara drink (fresh & perfect for the summer).
Service is fast & attentive, & the staff is all very warm & welcoming. The ambiance feels elevated without being overbearing, & the restaurant itself is beautifully designed & warmly lit.
Perfect place for a small group to share plates & grab drinks. Book in advance & ask for a table by the window in the summer, booth indoors in the winter. Their terrasse is also lovely too if you're lucky to catch it in the warmer months.
I came here with my husband for dinner & we ordered the rendang & kangkong belacan-both were delicious & full of flavour. The service was attentive & we enjoyed sitting outside. The only small thing I'd point out is the sambal. As an Indonesian, I found it very mild compared to what I'm used to back home. It still tasted great, but I missed that extra kick of spice. Overall though, a wonderful dining experience & we'd be happy to return.
Nice restaurant, great service, but a bit pricey. creative takes on Indonesian cuisine - I liked the idea of serving sambal as an appetizer. However, coming from the Netherlands where Indonesian food is common, I found the main dishes rather'underwhelming':
The Rendang lacked its usual bold flavors & tasted like a mild beef stew with coconut/peanut. The Marinated Beans were tasty but undercooked & rather pricey. Still worth the visit though…
Special note : their online reservation system asked if it was a'special occasion' - it was my anniversary - but there was no follow-up at the restaurant. Better to skip the question if it doesn't lead to anything...?
Stylish atmosphere, friendly staff, & beautifully presented dishes. We enjoyed the chicken & fish skewers, gado gado, rendang, chicken curry, & pandan crème brûlée-the dessert was the highlight. While everything was well-cooked & satisfying, the flavours lacked the boldness & depth we've experienced in Southeast Asia. The drinks were refreshing but mild. A pleasant experience overall, just not as punchy as hoped.
This place is special - the consideration & intentionally in the food, drinks & atmosphere are top notch. Standouts for my pallet are the mushrooms, malay Cote de boefe, the rendang & honestly all the cocktails. Ask your server for a natural wine pairing.
Amazing dinner. The beef rendang threw me right back to my Yogyakarta trip, the fried mushroom dish was actual heaven, service was very attentive, & the decor is wonderful. I can only recommend, & look forward to coming again :)
We had a great meal at Satu Lagi. The waiter guided us through the menu & we opted for the Jamur Jamur mushrooms (great with a sambal sauce), chicken satay (not bad but not great), rendang beef curry (a little one note in flavour), Chinese broccoli (so delicious!), & a chili cocktail (yummy)!
Another Montreal Gem. Delicious!
I went with three others. We shared the Sambal assortment as an appetizer. I had the Rendang Daging beef dish, very tender with coconut citronella rice, & the Kailan Bakar chinese broccoli side dish. The flavours are all amazing. I also had the fried bananas for dessert; it's all good. My friends loved their dinner choices, the service was excellent & the sound level allows for conversations without having to yell.
Also, it's 100% gluten-free, coeliac-friendly.
Apparently Satu Lagi means'One More', in English. I say'several more' is how often we'll be going back.
We went there for dinner. For the atmosphere & service, it's a bit expensive. The portions are ridiculously small. Especially the Sambhal, 4 tiny portions of sauces which lacked flavour & were not spicy at all. Chicken satay was good. All you can taste is the coconut milk in the beef rendang. It was a bit too much. The rice was very dry & crunchy. There was hardly any salt. At times it was confusing as what to add or mix to get it right. Being a big fan of Malaysian & Indonesian food, I was very disappointed. Also, the most popular dishes were not on the menu.
Enak sekali ! Terimakasi. Service tres attentionné & aimable
I've been craving & missing Indo-Malay cuisine for years, & having Satu Lagi in Montreal just makes me want to go & feast. So went there during lunch on a Friday & ordered the Nasi Campur - Mixed Rice, Nasi kuning, beef rendang, 1 telur belado, 1 stick chicken satay, a bit of sayur lemak & keropok udang for 32CAD. People will say expensive, but I guess due to rarity for this type of cuisine here in Montreal makes it worth it. & yes, if you want to taste & you miss Indo-Malay food, then come here. The rendang is as good as it get, the satay is more into kicap manis type than the turmeric kunyit variety. The telur belado really has that kick, though I guess they tried to mellow it down a bit for western pallet. What can I say? I can't wait to try their nasi lemak & bakar ikan pari. & hopefully they'll do an ayam penyet🥰.
the food is so unique & amazing! it's a wonderful & refreshing experience to try Indonesian/Malaysian cuisine that isn't as popular like other parts of Asia's culinary game. i highly recommend the sambals, beef rendang, fried fish, jackfruit stew, the fried chicken with fermented honey, pandan crême brûlée & the pandan drink is delightful! do be prepared as Indo/Malay cooking is spicyyy!!! otherwise, the chefs really have the flavour profile down - coconut, galangal, lime, chilis, tamarind, etc. the staff & service is always great too :)
Honestly the rendang taste is very authentic (Malaysia). Everything else is a mix of Malaysia & Indonesia.
Satu Lagi is not only tastes authentic, but also the chili in the store is absolutely so refreshing! Definitely a paradise for spicy lovers! The business during meal time is very busy,& the exotic flavor allows you to arrive in Indonesia in one second without having to go abroad. Each kind of chili sauce has a different flavor, so I recommend you try some of them, It's very mouth-watering when mixed with vegetables & rice, but it's really super spicy. The spiciness in Indonesia is mild at first, & it doesn't feel too spicy, even a little sweet, but after a while, the aftertaste will make people sweat...be careful! Rendang beef tastes a bit like curry beef. It can be said to be a super special dish in Indonesia, the beef is chunky & delicious. The fried duck legs are deep-fried until they are very, very crispy. It can be said that there is no gravy, but some of the fat & the duck skin taste particularly oily. It is delicious when paired with onion sauce & the turmeric rice!
