I had some great ramen in Vancouver & Toronto. Neotokyo has good atmosphere, service is very slow. For food, appetizers are pretty good, but ramen broth is too salty.
I tried both the broth ramen & the dry ramen (both were delicious), with very generous portions & outstanding flavor. The appetizers were also very good, & they came with a mustard/mayo-style sauce that was incredibly tasty. The service was attentive & quick, which made the experience even better. 100% recommended. The only detail is that it is not very suitable for large groups, so it's best to go as a couple or in a small group.
Service was great & the decor was fun. The ramen had perfectly cooked noodles & a flavorful broth, though the pork chashu was a little too fatty. The ice cream was excellent!
Visited during a recent trip to Montreal while in the downtown area. The restaurant atmosphere is a futuristic vibe with Japanese influences throughout the restaurant. They are better known for their ramen & mazemen (brothless ramen) dishes, as well as various Japanese inspired side dishes. Their best known mazemen bowl which is their Neotokyo Extra which comes with added chashu, an ajitama egg on top of their regular Neotokyo Mazemen bowl. It is a sizeable portion for one especially since it comes with an added bowl of rice to clean up the leftover sauce used for the mazemen. The flavours all mix very well & is a unique way of eating ramen as a whole. Overall, a decent spot for Japanese ramen & for an izakaya-like experience. Service was generally very friendly while I was there & my order came at a reasonable time despite the packed atmosphere. Recommended to come earlier to avoid the peak evening dinner time as there can be a bit of a wait.
On a Friday night, we had to wait for 20 min for a table. They ask for our number to call us when a place is available. We had to wait for around 15 min for the food to come. The food was just average. We took the Tokyo style & Tonkotsu ramen & the broth was too salty. The quantity is too little. For the egg, you only get half of it. The noodles texture was perfect. It was expensive, around 20$ a bowl. The karaage was good but ordinary & is not in big quantity. The server was nice & quick. I wouldn't come back
For Montreal ramen it was very good. As we just got back from Japan we're hesitant to eat Japanese food here since we know it will never measure up, but this was very satisfying. Tonkatsu ramen: broth lacked some depth, noodles lacked some chew, but the porc was incredibly tender & tasty, egg was probably the best ramen egg I've ever had, & the bamboo had great flavour. Staff was friendly & the vibe is cool. Overall I'd go back
The interior decoration is quite unique! I like the phone booth at the side! Food wise, soup broth is thick & can be salty for some people, but i feel it's flavourful. Chilli spice level is super low. When they say it's spicy, it's just peppery. So you can always request for the chilli power later. The dry noodles can be oily for some but I feel that's the correct texture. Add the rice that comes with it to level up the dry noodles experience! Give that a good mix & the rice will actually cling onto the noodles. Service wise, do be patient. The chefs are attentive & noticed the customers needs really fast. But the servers might require slightly more patience as they tend not to notice the customers.
Got some ramen to go, the broth was so rich but the noodles were even more amazing!!! 10/10
Why does ramen have to be so expensive in Mtl?!?! Granted: Neo Tokyo offers a nice rich & creamy broth without seeing an oily film over the soup nor feeling bad oily feel in mouth. Great char siu too! & the egg is definitely one of the better ones I've had in Mtl. Good job. But why the heck so expensive in Mtl?!?! Also ordered the Très Spicy Mazemen with lamb. Très good taste & good amount of lamb. It comes with a glass of soy milk to manage the heat BUT...very disappointing heat. Anyone who loves peppers & respects the heat will know the Korean buldak instant noodles. If you use the whole pack of spicy seasonning for the buldak (& you like it that spicy because the truth is that all we need is heat) then the très spicy mazemen is like 1/8 of that heat...maybe 1/10. So go ahead, eat the mazemen & don't be afraid to take out your contact lenses from your eyes without washing your hands if you need to after finishing slurpping these noodely friendlies. & then there is the spicy karaage (or should we simply say tangy karaage...no real heat here again)...big pieces, good ratio protein & batter, well fried, smothered in yummy sauce yet still crispy BUT why costco dehydrated cranberries & pumpkin seeds (or are they pepitas). Weird garnish. Cheapens it. I would do without or find something better. Don't need that tartness or nuttyness. Otherwise, great cyber punk atmosphere. You'd think you're in a Blade Runner set. Kuddos! Beers are decently priced. Acceptable. Service is good but almost too present...We don't need the waiter to come back so often. Just been there once so not sure if that's how they wait or if the one waiter we had.
Many moons ago, I came across Kinton Ramen in Chicago. I was looking forward to finding one in Montreal, but then I got distracted & came across this ramen-ya! Neo Tokyo had a little bit of that underground grunginess that you see in many Japanese manga/anime & sci-fi films. It transports you into that pseudo Matrix set. Our hostess (I think she is Meriem, at least that's what the bill said. Sorry, I should have asked;) was jokingly asking us if we want the French or English version of her services. Regretfully my français est très mal. So we went with English. The selection of appetizers were fantastic. Japanese fusion, they would not be out of place in any top Japanese restaurants: Spicy Karaage Nasu Agebidash Agedashi Tofu Kimchi Tsukemono You can really sense the various textures & depths of flavour. Then the main event: Tonkotsu! I have religiously tried many places from Japan, US, UK & it is a real skill to combine both the right noodles & the broth. Neo Tokyo hits that bulls eye on both counts. The firmness of the noddles & the richness of the broth were both exceptional! The creaminess is so smooth. Your inner noodle-self will thank you profusely!
I've been to Neotoyko three times so far & every single time the food is amazing & consistent. The atmosphere is so cool & different versus any other restaurant I've been too. I tried the Karage Spicy chicken it's a must as a starter, I've tried the TanTan (my favourite in my opinion with the broth), the mazesoba & the crème de bacon. The strawberry ice cream is amazing too!!! The wait on Friday night is so long I had to wait 1 hour & 30 min & I was told 40 but it was sooooo worth the wait. One last thing I would like to add I love the way they preserve the ambience they serve because when they bring you your food they bow to you & I find that so cool. I always see the runner/bus boy working so hard & running back & forth & I admire that as someone that works in a restaurant.
Really cool decor for a restaurant for sure! Unfortunately, the food was not exactly up to par considering the price point in my opinion. Takoyaki was tasty, nothing negative about it. The Mezamen I thought tasted ok & is a nice option. The Tonkotsu ramen was the most unfortunate as it made my friend sick & tasted odd. I do not know if they put some sort of cream or milk in the broth but it tasted as though cream had not been tempered in the broth properly & curdled, which is too bad. I value a restaurant's food above all else which is why I am only giving 3 stars, but we otherwise had a good service & the atmosphere was fun.
Neotokyo has turned into my favourite ramen spot in town due to their delicious mazemen. These brothless ramen dishes are simply delicious & unique. It is a place close to my heart as I love the cyberpunk aesthetic. I wish it included references to a variety of media in the genre, but of course it's mostly based on Akira. The first time I came here a while back, I wasn't too impressed, but they have really improved their menu over time, forcing me to edit my review & give it 5 stars. These days I would easily recommend this place as somewhere you have to go if you visit the city.
Awesome atmosphere-straight out of cyberpunk lore. My group enjoyed delicious food & was incredibly excited & complimentary. I need to especially thank our amazing server, Elle, who was patient & funny & incredibly accommodating. Being allergic to broth gluten & fish, this wasn't the best fit for me. Elle somehow pieced together a delicious meal comparable to the rest of our party. Thank you Elle!
Awesome cyberpunk vibes & good food! The interior was stunning & felt very Blade Runner-esque. My friends & I came on a Friday night, over an hour before closing, & waited about 7 minutes before getting a table. The interior is so die for! It was moderately noisy, full, & quite hot, but we were graciously seated next to a fan. The service was quick, friendly, & amazing! We ordered the Tonkatsu ramen, the Tokyo Style ramen, & the TanTan ramen. The food was good but not special. The Tonkatsu ramen was delicious, while the Tokyo style was ok & the TanTan was not good. The TanTan was extremely salty despite adding a cup of water to the broth, perhaps because we visited at the end of the day. Otherwise, the chasu & broth was flavourful & aromatic. Would come here again to give their mazemens a try!
Friendly efficient service. Takoyaki wasn't bad. Spicy karaage was amazing; great texture & flavour. Tonkatsu ramen had delicious broth but the pork wasn't great. Generous portions. The bourbon & tamarin cocktail was pretty good.
Very cool looking place. It has that sci-fi Blade Runner feel. With a very simple menu, I highly suggest trying their ramen carbonara (crème de bacon) 👌. Their Tonkotsu is a mild broth that lacked a bit of saltiness imo , we preferred the more rich, dense, creamy & slightly spicy TanTan broth!
We had the Karaage, Takoyaki "nachos" & Tonkotsu. The Tonkotsu arrived to the table about 5 minutes before the appetizers which was a little strange, but everything was served within ten - fifteen minutes of ordering. The Tonkotsu was very flavorful, maybe slightly too salty, but still very enjoyable. The noodles & the egg were done perfectly! Noodles had a soft & chewy texture, egg was soft boiled to perfection, & the creamy broth coated everything nicely. The meat could have been more tender & flavourful, but it wasn't bad by any means. Next came the Takoyaki "nachos". I'm a big fan of Takoyaki, we asked if we could get it traditional, without the "nacho" part, but we were told it's not possible. It's 4 pieces in total, fried with Dorito crumbs, covered in sauce, sliced fresh jalapeno, & bonito flakes. I usually love bonito flakes, but these ones were SO smoky & overpowering that I couldn't taste the Takoyaki or the sauce. Seriously unpleasant in my opinion, I felt like I ate a spoonful of liquid smoke. The Karaage was good, well battered & very tender, served with an interesting aoli, however, still not what I was hoping for. (If you love Karaage, check it out at Gyu Kaku. *Chefs kiss*). The atmosphere was great, we loved the lighting & decor, & the service was friendly but if I'm being honest, the best part of the meal was who I ate it with. Overall, I'm glad we tried it, but wouldn't go back.
The Neotokyo Mazesoba is excellent. Very tasty, & nice combination of textures & flavours. Highly recommended. The tonkotsu ramen is just alright. The broth was a bit bland, so I don't recommend that dish. Drinks were hit & miss. The H2O is refreshing, but the lemon overpowers the other ingredients. The Vista Del Rey is super good if you like minty flavours, but the portion size is way too small. Overall, the drinks aren't good value. I suggest drinking before or after going here, or just ordering a beer if you must. The decor is fun, staff was attentive. Space fills up fast. Not sure I'll return, as the overall value is just alright.
