I had an exceptionally wonderful experience at the Liverpool House recently. I had dined there several years ago on a business trip & really enjoyed it, so this time around, my mom was with me & I decided to take her here. While the menu has evolved since I came, it retained what made it special - high quality ingredients, very flavourful dishes, none of which felt heavy or too complicated.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is also something special - while it is definitely high-end in terms of the food, the setting feels incredibly welcoming, comfortable & unpretentious. My mom doesn't like fussy places & she felt right at home here. Our server - Cecelia (I hope I got her name right) was incredibly attentive, warm & kind.
The atmosphere was amazing as well as cocktails & choice of oysters. Unfortunately main dishes were underwhelming considering how famous this place is for food. Also, we both found it containing too much salt. & we are not shy of salty foods. High quality cuisine normally does not have such prominent salt content.

Great food & good service in a casual atmosphere. The beef tartare & the rib eye were the standout dishes for me but everything was great including the salad & the dessert.
The restaurant is very popular, I made the dinner reservation almost a month in advance.
We waited about 10 minutes to be seated, the host was very apologetic & provided us with complimentary bubbles while waited for our table which was a very nice gesture.
We were seated in the back patio area which is very lovely, our waiter was very attentive & moved us closer to a heater because I was cold. The food was incredible, the standout dishes for us were the beef tartare & the stake frites. Overall, the staff are very attentive & accommodating & the food speaks for itself. We had a lovely experience, thank you to the staff!
Absolutely epic food, amazing selection of French-influence Canadian dishes. I went there as part of a large, work-related, post-event party where we all ate family style. Great service, the waiters really know their stuff, & the food was exceptional. It's definitely on the pricier side, but worth it if you're looking for a superior Foodie experience. Everything was excellent. Did not have to wait since we had a large reservation for 20+ people.
I used to be the biggest fan of this place. My husband & I have been coming every year to celebrate our anniversary before wedding & post-wedding. We have raved about & recommended this restaurant to anyone looking for a nice place. The service used to be surprisingly casual for an expensive spot & unpretentious. The food was always incredibly inventive, well portioned & well flavoured. The daily menu used to have a wide array of interesting dishes that were a healthy mix between seafood & game meat.
Now? We recently went & were just shocked. The atmosphere is so different - the decor has shifted, the patrons are mostly all English tourists, the service has become incredibly pretentious & poor: when our server realized we weren't ordering wine, we hardly saw him as he fawned over other tables. The food, while still delicious, has lost all of its nice touches - the fries that come with the steak frites used to come seasoned with tallow & Parmesan, & are now just plain, the tartare used to be accompanied by (laughably) one piece of crisped bread & now comes entirely solo. Even the bread & pickle side has been downsized & includes (quite literally) half a pickle. We were incredibly disappointed this July & will certainly not be going back. There are many other restaurants in the city at a similar price point that are doing more for your money & not making you feel like you don't belong to eat there. It's a shame as for a lot of people, expensive restaurants are for special occasions where people make a conscious decision to allocate their disposable income to celebrate something special. These are not normal evenings for normal folks. & it's reasonable to expect a certain level of service (& by that I mean not being grossly neglected by your server & watching him be omnipresent to many other tables in your sections, or at least having him come by at least once before you finish two courses). Even after emailing the restaurant, it took them several days to respond with a chat gpt response asking about the name on the reservation. They thanked us for'giving them the chance to make it right' & then never heard anything back.
I used to be the biggest fan of this place but truly, spend your money elsewhere.
Pictured: the same dish year over year (steak frites).
Liverpool House in Montreal offers a dining experience that's both refined & deeply satisfying. From the moment you step in, the service is impeccable - professional, warm, & attentive without ever being overbearing. The ambiance is distinctly adult: cozy yet upscale, perfect for an intimate dinner or a special night out with friends. There's a sense of quiet sophistication in the air, balanced with a touch of laid-back charm.
The dishes are a masterclass in culinary craftsmanship. Every plate feels thoughtfully created & executed with precision. The meats are a true highlight: juicy, tender, & cooked to perfection, whether it's a steak, fish or pork. Each bite is layered with flavor, showing a clear attention to quality & technique. Even the sides & starters are memorable - fresh ingredients, beautiful presentation, & bold, satisfying combinations.
The beer selection is excellent, featuring local & craft options that pair well with the menu. But it's the wine list that truly shines: thoughtfully curated, diverse, & full of gems for both the casual drinker & seasoned connoisseur.
Liverpool House is a place where the details matter - in service, in food, & in atmosphere. A must-visit for those who appreciate elevated dining without pretension.

What can I say other than the fact this is my favourite restaurant & my wife & I look forward to returning here throughout the year!
From the first moment you step into the restaurant, you are greeted with warmth by the host / hostess, brought to your table & then offered a cocktail / drink to start off the night.
We love the at home, rustic vibe of the restaurant combined with the multi cultural & English & French dynamic that you get at this restaurant. The team seamless serves you in English & French & we love it as we love both languages.
The first time we went here was for my birthday & Cecile was our waitress & she surpassed our expectations. She recommended what she viewed as great'birthday dishes' & hit the mark! Her wine pairing suggestion for oysters / seafood (chenin blanc) & main course (Chianti Classico) were on point, in line with our taste & reasonably priced.
From start to finish, our experience was absolute perfection! The rest of the staff ensured we always had enough water & anything else that we needed. They also kept the tables clean & well organized throughout the night.
Last night we went back for a second time & had very good service from Sarah. She was attentive to our needs & patient when we were figuring out which wines we wanted to pair with our meal. Sarah was more reserved at first but then warmed up as the night went on.
Although she did forget us temporarily at the end of our meal when we were moved to the terrasse (after our time at the table ran out), she more than made up for it with a sincere apology & by comping us for our first glass of white & dessert.
Our meal was delicious with fresh oysters, arctic char, the foie gras breakfast sandwich (i will get this again… & again), New York strip with an incredible marinade & sauce (perfectly cooked), the lobster spaghetti (was good but not my favourite dish of the two nights), all of the desserts on the menu, delicious cocktails & wine.
Thank you to the Liverpool house team for two amazing nights. We will be back!
Excellent place for foodies like me! I went there for dinner last night & everything about this place is just great. The mood is nice & fun, the place was full even though it's a big space. The service is impeccable, our waitress was on point, very attentive & our table was kept clean & our plates were frequently replaced between dishes. I'd say it is rare to find this kind of service in Montréal ! & obviously, the food itself is delicious, we had the burrata & the salad as starters, the burrata was fresh & creamy & the salad was very savory. For the main dish we had the fish of the day, which was perfectly cooked & delicious as well. & finally we ordered the éclair glacée which was also a delicious treat! I highly recommend this place.
Everything you expect from the Joe Beef guys, over the top dishes with all the good stuff. The foie gras breakfast sandwich was the food highlight, but the real highlight was the staff. We had Sarah for most of our meal, & she was truly fantastic.

Went as a group of 8, had the set meal. We were well welcomed & the dishes portion are just perfect! Steak, beef tartare were delightful, pairing with red wine. They have an extensive selection of wine.
another stunner restaurant by the joe beef group. all the dishes were so well prepared & gave you a sense of comfort from an elevated home cooked meal. we got the lobster bisque, skate wing special & the fish as well as the chocolate mousse & doughnut hole dessert. everything was amazing. vin papillon is still my fav but this is up there for top in the city.
Great seasonal menu, cozy atmosphere & delicious food. Very welcoming staff, & the wait time is very reasonable. The selection of wines are great for larger groups of friends, & for dates. Definitely recommend the seasonal seafood dishes & of course, the meat dishes. Will definitely return for a special occasion, or pay a visit to its sister restaurant, Joe Beef.
Incredibly dark in the restaurant, 70% of the diners using phone flashlights to read the menu. Dishes were hit or miss, the frog legs tasted fine but were full of tiny broken bones, sharp & difficult to eat. Some dishes were generously portioned, others were very small. Ordering sides separately seemed like a bit of a cash grab. Coworker was given a piece of pork belly with a 3 x 3 inch square of solid fat & wasn't thrilled, the kitchen told us that pork belly is'a fairly fatty cut of meat' which was somewhat insulting. Combined with the fact that the restaurant was incredibly dark & 70% of the customers were using flashlights to read the menu, you can't help but think that the ego of the kitchen overrides common sense. The service was fine & our waitress clearly tried her best in a tough situation. All in all, for what you're paying, the restaurant was a let down.

My wife & I had dinner there Saturday night & the food was delicious! The pork belly was tender with crisp skin. It was rich & salty. My wife had the cabbage with mushrooms which was surprisingly good for a vegetarian dish. We shared the market vegetables which were squash with butter & honey. I personally thought it tasted more like a dessert than a side dish but it was good none the less. My biggest criticism of this restaurant was that it is very dark. We used our phone flashlights to read the menue & when the dishes arrived we had trouble seing them. It looked like the chef payed a lot of attention to the details & it would have been nice to see what we were eating. I will probably try this place again.
Was afraid this wouldn’t live up to the hype but we were blown away! We sat at the back bar & enjoyed oysters, the rolls, a few vegetable dishes & steak frites. The wine was great & each dish was spot on, plus just a fun vibe!
The place is nice, but the food is really disappointing... or I didn't order the right dishes : I had (among other things) a "very French salad" (or something like that) I totally can do it at home, & not because I'm French, but because it was only cut vegetables in a bowl... come on! (The other dishes were just correct)
Liverpool House, nestled in the heart of Montreal, provides an ambiance that is a delightful blend of casual & upscale. Its eclectic menu boasts of a variety of dishes that evoke a fusion of traditional & modern culinary artistry. The oysters & lobster spaghetti are, without a doubt, crowd favorites, a testament to the kitchen's prowess with seafood.
However, Liverpool House is not without its drawbacks. During my visit, the waiting time was noticeably longer than expected, even with a reservation in place. Additionally, while most dishes hit the mark, a few, like the roasted chicken, felt a tad underwhelming, especially given the establishment's reputation & price point.
The staff, though polite, seemed slightly overwhelmed, which affected the overall service speed & attentiveness. Perhaps it was just an off-night, given the high volume of customers.
All in all, Liverpool House offers a good but not impeccable dining experience. It shines in its seafood offerings & ambiance, but there's room for improvement in service & consistency.
Liverpool House, located on Notre Dame St in Griffontown, is one of the better known eating establishments in Montreal, being part of the Joe Beef group. The restaurant is deceivingly large, entering into a large bar & kitchen area, then passing into, antoher room, then onto two large back patios & a third interior room. The back patios are wonderful to enjoy the warm summer months, surrounded by an array of flora & fauna; while the interior is much darker & dimmer...so both tastes are covered.
The menu is tight with an emphasis on meats (chicken, duck, beef, etc..) & some fish dishes. Four our meal we ordered the Parker House Rolls (very good...but a bit on the salty side), Steak Frites (very good), Lamb Shoulder (a huge dish & excellent, including the bone marrow...perfectly done), Chicken Bercy (also very good), Pork Belly (good), & the Market Vegetables (also very good...mostly carrots). For dessert we shared the multi-layer Marjolaine cake slice (also good).
Service was very friendly & informative although I did find it a bit tempered...however our section was full & there was a lot going on. Overall a very good food experience. Enjoy!
