Review Summary

Reviews describe Chez Potier as a refined pastry destination where artful presentation meets exceptional taste, and the shop doubles as an epicerie gourmande with European goods. Pastries such as croissants, mille feuille, fraisier, galette des rois, amandines and canneles are repeatedly praised for quality and texture, with many calling the selection among the best in Montreal or even North America. Standouts include the lemon tart, a rose lychee dessert, and other creations, while the in house hot chocolate and coffee receive high marks. The space is clean, elegant and inviting, though seating is limited and take out is often recommended. Service can vary, with some reviewers finding staff friendly and attentive and others noting a chilly or overly formal tone on certain visits. Prices are high but described as worth it for the quality, and changes to portions have drawn mixed reactions; there is also a rare safety concern noted about a cake. Overall, this destination is seen as a standout pastry spot that many return to for pastry connoisseurship and gift shopping alike.

Tried their mille-feuille - it was really good! They have so many pastry options & everything looks delicious. You can also find lots of French products like Dammann teas, Isigny butter, & honey… Prices are definitely on the high side, but it's such a cute new spot worth visiting!

I've been buying from this pastry shop for over a year & I must agree with the other reviews to say that while the pastries & cakes are really good probably the best I've had in Montreal, the service is terrible. There's one young woman who is very warm & welcoming her service is great everyone else is extremely cold & they do stare at you weirdly when you come in in a weird judgemental way. It's just really weird & dry customer service that is not welcoming at all. I assume most of them are co-owners of the place because the staff doesn't change

Chez Potier is not your average café-this place *levels up* the pastry experience in every way. The moment you walk in, you feel the refined yet welcoming vibe that sets the tone for what's to come. It's a beautifully curated space that blends the elegance of a European pastry boutique with the warm charm of a local favorite.

The pastry selection is nothing short of stunning-each piece genuinely looks like a work of art. I tried their in-house hot chocolate & was impressed by the rich flavor. You can really taste the quality cocoa, though I personally would've preferred it less frothy & a touch darker. That said, it was still a delight to sip.

I paired the hot chocolate with a strawberry cream pastry that showcased real craftsmanship. It featured four distinct layers: a silky vanilla cream on top that was absolutely decadent, followed by a refreshing middle layer of strawberry accented with fresh mint, & finished with a touch of fresh strawberry on the side. The base was a little firmer & drier than I'd like, but it didn't take away from the overall flavor, which was still thoughtfully composed & delicious.

Service here deserves a shoutout-attentive, knowledgeable, & warm. Their recommendations were spot-on, & it's clear they take pride in what they do. Beyond pastries & coffee (which is in-house brewed, by the way), they offer a selection of fine European goods including Italian delicacies, French products, truffle oil, & even caviar.

Chez Potier has a lot to offer & then some. I'm already looking forward to going back & trying more. A must-visit for pastry lovers, café connoisseurs, or anyone looking to indulge in a little edible art.

Great bakery/pastry place that doubles up as a fancy gourmet store. Interior decoration is not bery inviting, uses dark colors that do jot provide a cosy café vibe. Great service.

It was hard to choose a pastry with so many tempting options, but I ended up with the Carre Dore Signature & an oat milk latte-both were delicious! Prices are reasonable, & there's a great variety of unique gift items, like different types of salts. The staff were incredibly friendly & knowledgeable. A fantastic spot all around!

I travel to Montréal from time to time & every time ´Chez Potier' is my place to go for a nice treat, especially since chef Tilly left the city two years ago. Why ´Chez Potier'? For the intricate desserts & real croissants. As much as I appreciate the multi-element desserts, I can not ignore the lack of good reception. I believe that people who serve the customers, must make an effort to be kinder & more appropriate. If not out of respect to the customers themselves, at least have respect to the chef & all the people, who put heart, imagination, artistry & extremely hard work into making such exquisite pastry. Chapeaux to the creators!

The two stars I took away from my review is for the service. It is not good to assume that your customers would not enjoy time at the shop & load a bag of five croissants, a cake & a hot chocolate to go. It's even worse when you are asked to make their order for in the house, to rudely scold them that next time they better tell you so way in advance, before they wrapped the pastry in the paper bag (the cake was not yet served & the chocolate wasn't even charged). Last November I had similar experience: I was savouring desserts & drinks inside the store. Before leaving, I decided to buy jars of mustard & other gourmand goodies. I again was advised next time to make up my mind in advance, instead of being cashed twice.
Multiple little mentions like this make me feel like I am being an annoyance. Why would I want to come back next time I visit Montréal?!

Best cakes in town. Precise technique, fine texture, beautiful to look at & to taste. Exactly how a high end French pastry should be.

5/5 I don't usually like pastry here as it could get too sweet to me, but I am so glad I live a little far away from this pastry shop otherwise I would probably go everyday. Give it a try if you haven't.

Stumbled upon this place by accident. The pastry here are made to perfection. The crossant was so beautiful & the Canele was just exquisite- one of the best in town made to perfection. Definitely worth it!

Amazing French style dessert/ pastry store. Love every dessert, not too sweet, great look. The cafe latte is also delicious 🤤 although the price is a bit higher than average pastries, it's worth going.

Baba au rum, eclair au café & tart au citron.
The pastries are amazing & thoughtfully created, with every element, layer & texture serving its purpose. However, though these are beautiful & elegant, the taste is often overlooked in the final verdict. This was my second time here & I can say that it has not amazed me & shocked me out of this world because the flavors are just NOT there. This is my biggest critique of high level chef pastry shops. Often time they are afraid to push the flavors to an extreme, so you end up with very bland tasting pastry. For example there is so much potential in the Tart au citron but there isn’t enough lemon taste & acidity to the crème to make it really stand out. Same goes for the éclaire au café. I would like to see more emphasis on the harmony between flavor & structure when I am paying for expensive pastries.
For this reason I do not consider it the best French pastry in Montreal.
