Review Summary

Boulangerie Cheskie is widely praised as a top Montreal bakery for traditional Eastern European Jewish baked goods, with the babka (especially chocolate and cinnamon) and cheese crowns repeatedly highlighted as standout items. The selection includes a wide range of pastries, cookies, rugelach, croissants, cakes, and even savory sandwiches, with many noting fresh, high quality ingredients and a rich butter aroma. The atmosphere is described as cozy and welcoming, the space bright and modern in the newer location, and the service often fast and friendly, though a few reviews note uneven experiences. Late hours and good value for money are frequently mentioned, and many see the bakery as a reliable go-to for a late night treat or a special occasion. Several reviewers compare it favorably to other well known Jewish bakeries, calling it a must visit and one of the best in town, even as lines can be long for popular items. While the core offerings receive high praise, a minority mention that some items can be overly sweet or doughy and a few notes point to inconsistent service. Overall, Boulangerie Cheskie is regarded as a beloved institution in Montreal for authentic kosher pastries, exceptional babkas, and a comforting, high quality experience that brings visitors back again and again.

If you're in Mile End, a stop at Boulangerie Cheskie is non-negotiable. This legendary Hasidic bakery is a must try, & the chocolate babka is truly the star of the show, rich, gooey, & perfectly decadent.

Beyond the babka, the selection is breathtaking. From their famous mini-cheese crowns to a dizzying array of black-&-white cookies & rugelach, every inch of the display case is packed with perfection.

I had a friend who hyped up this bakery & their small cheesecakes. When I bought three of their cheesecake crowns, all of them were really dry & it didn't have that savory strong cheesecake flavour. Didn't live up to the hype when I visited.

Get the chocolate babka & then cottage cheese one or cottage cheese crowns.
It's not a fine patisserie, but they are good at what they specialize. Babkas are top!

Lines are long for a good reason. Their cheese crowns & chocolate bubka in particular, are beyond description.

Totally worth the stop. Classic Eastern European baked goods done right-no frills, just quality. The babka & cheese crown were great, but the cheesecake was incredible. Best I've had-so good I bought three!

A little bakery filled with wonderful goodies for a very reasonable price! I loved the cheese crown & the apple cake, but found rugelahs to be a bit too sweet (even though I've got such a sweet tooth!). Still, I'd love to go back to try other items! The servers were not friendly or helpful - they looked rather bored/tired. Could it be that I annoyed them because I obviously didn't fit in + wanted to ask questions? I wonder.

There's magic being made in that kitchen. I've been going for years & not only do they never disappoint, but they exceed expectations. The pastries are top drawer. I'm partial to the cheese crowns, but it really is l'embarras du choix as I wait to order. The onion crackers have always proved a hit, too. Whenever I have brought them to a gathering, everyone just kept returning additively for more. Montreal is very lucky to have Cheskie. But, now that I heard how Trump's victory was celebrated by free cookies to customers, I will not be going back.

It has definitely earned its moniker as a local institution. The crowns are second to none & the chocolate babka is a must have. Most of what they make here is pretty good. I've had some issues with being sold a box full of stale rogolach & cannoli. I also witnessed a bearded man get harassed in store by a different client & he was not reprimanded nor was the victim offered anything as compensation, the staff pretended like it was not happening.

J'adore ! Je recommande surtout le rugelach aux graines de pavot & les cheese crowns. Les prix sont très justes aussi

The absolute best babka on the planet. There's a lineup for a reason & it's worth every single minute of waiting. Pastries are fresh & delicious, the cheesecake crowns are to die for, & their chocolate rugellach is out of this world. Actually, everything there is delicious! Looking forward to the holidays just for their honey cake. It's the best I've ever had. Does not disappoint ever!
