At 316 avenue du Mont-Royal Est, we've been loving the kouing-amann for over 30 years.
A true neighborhood café, the owner and employees work together to offer gourmet pastries (made with passion!), fresh sandwiches and the famous kouing-amann.
Let yourself be tempted by a moment of greed in a warm family atmosphere that has lasted for nearly three decades.
Au Kouing-Amann earns widespread praise for its namesake pastry, with the kouign amann described as perfectly caramelized on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth soft and buttery inside, often hailed as one of the best pastries in Montreal. The menu also shines with croissants and other flaky specialties, though the star remains the signature treat, and warm service plus a cozy, compact setting are frequently noted. Busy periods, small seating, and occasional limited hours are common caveats, but queues are seen as a sign of popularity and the wait is often deemed worth it. Overall, Au Kouing-Amann is described as a must visit for pastry lovers, delivering consistent flavor, authentic Breton influence, and a memorable bakery experience that locals and visitors alike would return to.
We had an amazing experience with this place! We were driving from Ottawa & were going to arrive around 6 PM, even though they close at 4:30. Somehow, they still managed to help us - they took payment online, sent us the receipt, & even arranged for our order to be picked up from the business next door.
That level of service is beyond exceptional. Truly above & beyond what anyone would expect. Honestly, you deserve 10 stars instead of 5!
Highly recommend - thank you again for making it work for us!
Great bakery! Haven't had many Kouign Amann, so not sure if they are all this good but this was amazing. I like how they make sure it's served at the right temp. It was flaky, dense, soft & the exterior chewy a tiny bit in a good way. Also a great taste & balance of sweetness. Will definitely be back.
Leur café est excellent & leur viennoiseries tout autant.
C'est la première fois que j'y allais & j'ai vite compris pourquoi le café était bondée de clients. Je recommende fortement.
Been getting the Kouing Amann every time I get the chance to buy it (this place does not open every day & sometimes takes a summer break), but every time is as good as the first time I tried it. Ive also had coffee & other pastries. Quality is superio

If you're in Montreal & love pastries, you absolutely have to try Kouign-Amann!
Hands down, this was one of the best pastries I've ever had. The Kouign-amann is simply amazing - perfectly caramelized sugar on the outside with rich, buttery layers on the inside. Crispy, sweet, & melt-in-your-mouth delicious.
We also tried the croissant & the almond croissant, & both were outstanding. The almond croissant is a must-try - flaky, buttery, & generously filled, with sliced almonds on top adding the perfect crunch.
It's a small place & very busy, but that just shows how good it is. Totally worth the wait. A must-visit spot in Montreal for pastry lovers!
Finally made it here while they were open after many failed attempts over the years! I got the most coveted kouign aman, some butter croissants & a couple almond croissants. They weren't the best almond croissants I've ever had but they were okay. I did however love the butter croissants & the kouign aman as I could taste the deliciousness of butter minus the greasiness. Now I have to wait 4 days for them to reopen lol
the kouign amann was the most DIVINE, DELECTABLE little treat ever. it was soooo hot & fresh & warm JUST PERFECT ON A COLD MORNING. it had a chewy, sweet caramelized-sugary crust & a super soft, mushy, comforting doughy inside. the entire thing was just oozing with butteriness, & slightly oily - paired nicely with a cup of water. i kind of want to bring an entire full 12 portion pastry home .
Golden, flaky, & worth every single crumb. ✨ 🥐
If you haven't experienced the legendary Kouign-Amann from this Plateau staple, are you even living your best Montreal life? 🏔?
Did you know that Pâtisserie Au Kouing Amann has been a neighborhood icon since 1999? For over 25 years, they've been perfecting the art of the Breton'butter cake,' staying true to the traditional methods that make their crust so perfectly caramelized & their center so melt-in-your-mouth soft. It's a little slice of Brittany right here on Mont-Royal Avenue. 🇫🇷🇨🇦
Pro tip: Get there early while they're still warm from the oven! ☕?🥧

I'm reviewing this about four months later because I still think about the pastry I got from here. It was the best thing I've ever tasted. Do yourself the favor & go.
One of Montreal's best bakeries. Known for their Kouing Amann, which is a baked good I first came across in the Breton region of France. Delicious, but not good for your waistline! Also fantastic croissants.
One of my favorite bakery finds over the past year was this little bakery on Avenue Mont-Royal.
Of course the thing to get is the treat that lends the bakery its name, the kouign amman- a flaky cake with a hard shell & soft interior hailing from Brittany. If you want to get a slice to enjoy, don't make the same mistake I did & order the'small/petit'- that would get you a small cake, which is still a rather large thing to eat in one sitting. Then again, there are many worse mistakes one could make.
The other heads up is that there's only seating for two or maybe three groups, so maybe plan on picking up something to enjoy on a picnic.
Their kouign amann has genuinely made me rethink the standard. Absolutely mindblown at how good it is here, even came back & bought a whole kouign amann to bring back to Toronto. Also had their croissant au fromage & it might've one of the best i've had as well. An absolute must when visiting Montreal.
