UMAMI RAMEN & IZAKAYA is the very first fully vegan ramen restaurant in Montreal.
Thanks to the import of a Japanese machine for making noodles, the establishment makes its own homemade noodles from organic wheat, in addition to making its broths, Tsukemono, kombucha and sprouts! The restaurant offers several varieties of ramen and small classics of Japanese Bistronomy in a vegan version. Whether we think of okonomiyaki, gyozas, Agedashi tofu or even tempeh Tonkatsu, Cédric and his team are happy to present to you every day, from starter to dessert, these revisited Japanese classics... just a few exclusives straight out of our kitchens. And who says Izayaka, of course, says refreshing beers, sumptuous wines, intoxicating cocktails, delicate sakes and other fine wine products. At Umami Ramen, we experience cruelty-free gastronomy at its best!

We opted for the tasting menu & I am so glad that we did! The dishes complimented each other perfectly & the pacing of the plates coming out of the kitchen was just right. I was delighted by the creativity of flavour combinations & the pretty plating . Our group was FULL by the end of the night! I highly recommend eating here & I cannot wait to go back. The cocktails were delicious as well. Compliments to the kitchen & to the lovely waitstaff.
A refaire !
This spot never fails— nothing but exquisite!! Non-vegan friends of mine still think this is probably the best ramen spot in the whole city. As a vegan—there is absolutely no competition.
Hit & miss. The wafu salad with chrysanthemum leaves sounded interesting, but the leaves themselves have a thistle-like texture & are not the best as a salad green. My shoyu ramen had a strong, salty broth that mostly tasted like mushroom soy sauce; pickled daikon, very forward on the sourness; shiitake mushrooms; wakame; & yuba, which had been grilled but otherwise not seasoned. So it was a mix of various flavours that did not feel like they belonged together; the daikon especially felt out of place. But honestly I just found the broth disappointing.
On the other hand, partner got the mapo tofu ramen which was delicious—rich, umami(!), & satisfying. For dessert, the mizu shingen mochi ("raindrop cake") was delicate, well balanced, not too sweet, & just generally an interesting eating experience.
So, a mixed bag!
Servers were friendly. The pace is very relaxed, on the slow side; we had about a 20 minute wait before our order was taken, followed by 20 minutes between each course.
Delicious food & friendly servers. But the appetizers arrived before the cocktails (which had been ordered first) so there was no time to enjoy the drinks & conversation before the food. It felt rushed. Would definitely return but wait for the cocktails before ordering food!
First time at Umami. We had a wonderful, leisurely meal - in fact, the timing of the various dishes served was just right - enough time to savour each dish, but not too much waiting between dishes either. Ordered the tasting menu, which was generous & delicious, offering us new foods & tastes, beautifully presented. One of us can't eat sesame seeds, & the chef made a much appreciated effort to accommodate him, making sure to eliminate or minimise these in many of the dishes served. Service was excellent, with lots of explanations when needed. My only criticism would be that the wine by the glass did not offer many choices. However, the umi sour was excellent, & the saki we tried was new to us & very nice.
