UMAMI RAMEN & IZAKAYA is the very first fully vegan ramen restaurant in Montreal.
Thanks to the import of a Japanese machine for making noodles, the establishment makes its own homemade noodles from organic wheat, in addition to making its broths, Tsukemono, kombucha and sprouts! The restaurant offers several varieties of ramen and small classics of Japanese Bistronomy in a vegan version. Whether we think of okonomiyaki, gyozas, Agedashi tofu or even tempeh Tonkatsu, Cédric and his team are happy to present to you every day, from starter to dessert, these revisited Japanese classics... just a few exclusives straight out of our kitchens. And who says Izayaka, of course, says refreshing beers, sumptuous wines, intoxicating cocktails, delicate sakes and other fine wine products. At Umami Ramen, we experience cruelty-free gastronomy at its best!

Ordered the Okonomiyaki, Shishito, citrus ramen, shoyu ramen, & shoyu tsukemen.
Food was very mid & it took us an hour to get the food (they comped us the appetizers due to the wait). We did not finish any of the main
Food was overly rich, very heavy & hard to digest. The curry ramen was way too thick. Service was all over the place. While we were there we got 4 different servers. Two of them seemed completely lost. Overall, I was disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. Only pro was the patio outside, which was nice.
An exceptional modern Japanese restaurant in Little Italy. The Ramen & gyoza are reinvented in a extraordinary way.
Opted the tasting menu (5 course). This does not include the Ramen, but is a wonderful option if you are looking to try something new & experimental. The vegan caviar is the top of my list. I have not tasted anything like it. The banana flower fry was phenomenal. A bit expensive but totally worth it!
I took the kimchi ramen & honestly… it wasn't tasty at all. It was definitely lacking flavour. As someone who loves Asian dishes, & loves kimchi as well, I didn't like it. Also my friend took the potatoes & it was smelling rotten, & the taste was even worse. I hate wasting food & even if I don't like something I will eat it, but this time I threw it away. I don't know if it was just a bad day for the cook because I see that there's a lot of good reviews. But in my side, I will not come back.
Umami in Montréal is a vegan Japanese restaurant that really impressed me. They offer a great selection of entrées, cocktails, & several types of ramen. My fiancée & I started with the miso eggplant super tasty & full of flavor. For the main course, we each had a ramen: the spicy miso & the creamy kimchi. Both were rich, satisfying, & really hit that umami spot.
We also shared a dessert, a doughnut with chocolate ice cream & a caramel drizzle. The ice cream was delicious & creamy, but the doughnut wasn't very moist & didn't taste as fresh as we'd hoped.
The only downside overall was the wait time the food took quite a while to arrive. But in the end, the flavors made it worth it, & we'll definitely be back!
Visited Umami on a Saturday evening for their last night of Japan Week
The atmosphere at the restaurant is very intimate & personal with its limited seating, dim lighting & small tables that almost make dining in odd numbers uncomfortable. Reservations are recommended as tables can be difficult to find via walk-in.
Service was smooth & accommodating; the front of house were open to all questions & were understanding of dietary restrictions. Food, on the other hand, was slow & not as flavorful as we had hoped for. We waited upwards to 40 minutes for our ramen.
The ramen noodles are made in-house & have a wonderful bouncy texture when isolated, but the finished dishes left much to be desired. The enoki tempura & summer truffle ramen for their Japan Week special was under-seasoned & contained pickled vegetables that provided an acidity that I did not enjoy with the creaminess of the broth. The tempura batter on the enoki mushrooms was also not as light & crispy as one would typically expect.
The miso ramen & the shoyu tsukemen were also under-seasoned, & the fragrance & flavor of the broths would be enhanced only with a heavier touch of salt.
The highlight of our meal was the eggplant agebitashi appetizer served cold.
Overall, our experience at Umami was underwhelming, perhaps at the fault of our own expectations.
The servers were very nice & gave me the WiFi when I asked as my phone couldn't open the menu which was on a QR code.
The Karaage was delicious & had a great texture. It was a little spicy. The Okonomiyaki was yummy too & more spicy ahha. I got the curry ramen with crispy tempeh. It was good but I think it needed salt.
My friends got the spicy kimchi ramen & miso ramen (not too salty like previous reviews mentioned) which they said were good.
It was quite loud in the restaurant. The tables were quite close together & the music was too loud in my opinion. Other than that, I had a lovely time & I would go again!
Delicious ramen & izakayas! I have been there four times since it opened, two weeks ago!
The service is very friendly & the servers explain dishes well & are very charismatic. That being said the food was a disappointment. We had the tasting menu & a few of our first courses were noteworthy & set a higher expectation that the mains didn't deliver on. The main courses were underwhelming & we didn't feel like they reflected the price range in terms of quality. We would love to come back & try the ramen as we did still did baseline enjoy our experience & think we may have just been there on an off night, or something of the sort.
