Seasame bagel & classic sandwich with vegan cream cheese are amazing!
I dont know how everyone saying this is the best bagels in montreal.I can tell you is not & i just think after trying all the top bagel spots in canada, bagels aren't a Canadian thing. The bagel for is small, tastes super mid & the cream cheese just tastes like regular philadelphia cream cheese. The second thing is i dont know if the chubby guy with glasses at the cashier is fhe manager/owner,he seem like to me because he was at the back bossing everyone around but dam he has such a bad attitude.we bought two bagel sandwiches,a pack of 6 bagels & the store merch. We are asking for a bag because i mean my god is so much things we have to hold,do i have to ask for a bag.He screwed his face up to give us one.We visited saturday 11th april,2026 at around 10am.
So please save yourself & go to New york city if you want a good bagel! Or in toronto there is whatabagel,it's ok but far far better than this place.
A beloved Montreal institution! St-Viateur is home to perhaps Montreal's most famous culinary creation, the Montreal-style bagel. You'll definitely encounter a line, but it moves quickly, & the ordering process is smooth. It's fun to see the boisterous bagel production factory right in front of you as the shop is constantly pumping out hot, wood-fired bagels. I got the Traditional on their most popular flavor, the sesame. The bagel itself was fresh out of the oven & so crunchy. The inside was soft & fluffy with a bit of sweetness from the honey water these bagels are boiled in. The salmon, cream cheese, & veggies all tasted fresh as well. I assure you if you're a bagel lover, you will crave St-Viateur long after your trip to Montreal!
The BEST bagels in MTL! Great choice of sweet or savoury options. Very friendly staff. Small little place, so it gets very busy. Well worth the trip or any wait time. Best to go early. If you go closer to closing, (as we did on 2nd visit) they may be out of bagels (except in take out bags), & serving individual sandwiches on regular bread instead. You *want* the bagels! We loved both the cinnamon raisin, toasted, with strawberry cream cheese, & the lovely steak & caramelized onions on a sesame seed bagel. You get cantaloupe slices on the side, which is a nice touch. Very, very filling, & so good you'll want to come back for more!
Absolutely loved my experience here! The bagels are what breakfast dreams are made of - fresh, soft bread that's clearly made with care. But what really elevated it was the cheese spread - it perfectly complemented the bagel's flavor without overpowering it. You can tell they pay attention to quality ingredients & flavor balance. This is definitely my new go-to spot for bagels. Highly recommend giving them a try!
Great visit to St-Viateur! Note that it's cash only, but they do accept both USD & CAD. The sesame bagel with cream cheese was excellent, perfectly crunchy on the outside & lighter than typical U.S.-style bagels, making it a great quick bite. The setup is well organized with separate lines for bagel sandwiches & for bulk bagel orders to go, which helps things move efficiently even when it's busy.
Skip the line, grab one (or six) hot fresh bagels from the takeaway counter, a couple small pots of chive cream cheese- rip n dip, baby!!

Classic Montreal Bagel Experience
I stopped by St-Viateur Bagel for breakfast & went straight for their popular smoked salmon on a sesame bagel- & it was the perfect introduction to why this place is so beloved in Montreal.
The sesame bagel came warm & fresh from the wood-fired oven, with that unmistakable Montreal-style texture: slightly crisp on the outside, soft & chewy inside, & just a hint of sweetness. It paired beautifully with the smoked salmon, which was rich, flavorful, & balanced nicely by the cream cheese & traditional toppings capers & onion.
What I loved most was the simplicity done right. No frills, no over-complication- just incredibly fresh, well-crafted ingredients that speak for themselves. The staff was friendly, service was quick, & despite the constant stream of customers, everything felt smooth & welcoming.
If you're visiting Montreal or just craving a top-tier bagel breakfast, the smoked salmon on a sesame bagel at St-Viateur is a must-try. It's a classic for a reason, & I'd absolutely come back for another.
Bagels were good but not to die for. There was a big line up we had to wait for but it wasn't necessarily worth the wait.
Chipotle cream cheese was very tasty but the rest of the items were good but not amazing.
To put it another way, if the store had no line I would go in. Otherwise I'd go elsewhere
You can't go to Montreal & not go to St Viateur. Honestly. Poppyseed is the best one. Standard cream cheese (& butter) is all you need. Golden.
Solid spot that's is worth trying. My brother & I came here in August & we had the traditional bagel sandwich (smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato, onion, capers) & it tasted pretty good, everything paired really well together. The service was mixed; we had one particularly rude employee get annoyed since we misunderstood the'bagel vs sandwich line' but the others were fine. Overall atmosphere isn't anything incredibly special but it's a decent interior & the exterior has a nice patio. For someone who wants to check off the bucket list Montreal bagels, I would definitely recommend going here.
Amazing Bagels- a must do when in Montreal. Expect a bit of a queue, but it moves quickly. My favourite is the sesame seed bagel, toasted with plain cream cheese. Perfect texture & just a kiss of sweetness in the dough. Perfection!
Best bagels i have ever had.. loved the club sandwich & sesame bagel with cream cheese.. staff was very friendly & welcoming.. had a really good eat in experience .. worth the wait & long queue..
*CASH ONLY* at St Viateur bagel
I was here on Saturday noon, & there was a long line reaching in front of BMO. This is the line for both dine it & take out. Then at the door they separate you into left or right; left for sandwiches & right for take out/buying bags. By the way I waited 45 minutes before I got to the cashier.
The cashier recommended traditional on sesame bagel $14. I searched previous reviews for anyone who's tried Courage Bagels in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, but no one seemed to have mentioned them. I absolutely LOVE Courage Bagels, so I was really excited to try Montreal-style bagels here. My hot take is the salmon lox at Courage tastes better than the traditional one at St Viateur. My reason is Courage Bagel uses a lot more seasoning, especially on the salmon. The salmon here is like barely salty, but it is very soft. The bagel itself is wonderful. (The line at Courage is atrocious.)
The other bagel I got to try is the smoked meat bagel on all-dressed bagel $14. This was one great with the mustard, but I added a bit of extra cream cheese from the salmon bagel, & it tasted even better! If I were to get it again, I would ask for cream cheese on this one.
Servers are nice & spoke English & French.

Amazing bagel & cream cheese. Very different from the NY/NJ bagels I am used to. These are thinner, more crispy, & have a slight hint of sweet/honey that compliments the tart cream cheese really well.
The bagels absolutely lived up to the hype.
The difference between U.S. water bagels & Montreal's is more than just shape-they're slightly sweet, flatter, & thinner, & here, they turn them into full-on sandwiches. I came here early in the morning with my girlfriend & was thrilled that this spot met expectations. I started with a simple bagel & cream cheese, & man, was it good. I ended up walking back in to order a dozen to take home, as well as a roadie for the walk back to the metro.
The staff was friendly & spoke English, French, & Spanish. Just one heads-up: they don't take American credit cards, so bring cash (CAD or USD) when you go.
Great little bagel shop. Close to the train station so easy to get in the mornings. I had their Salmon & Cream Cheese. Delicious!
Ever since this place was featured on the Netflix show Somebody Feed Phil, I've been wanting to visit-& the hype definitely doesn't disappoint. They have a variety of bagel sandwiches, both veg & non-veg, & my favourite has to be the fig & cream cheese one. It's on the sweeter side but pairs perfectly with an Americano.
This is a cash-only or debit location, so plan accordingly. The ambience is your classic cozy café vibe, & the patio is the best part.
If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of how the bagels are freshly made on-site. I genuinely enjoyed watching the entire process. The staff is super friendly & adds to the charm of the place.
