A beloved Montreal institution! St-Viateur is home to perhaps Montreal's most famous culinary creation, the Montreal-style bagel. You'll definitely encounter a line, but it moves quickly, & the ordering process is smooth. It's fun to see the boisterous bagel production factory right in front of you as the shop is constantly pumping out hot, wood-fired bagels. I got the Traditional on their most popular flavor, the sesame. The bagel itself was fresh out of the oven & so crunchy. The inside was soft & fluffy with a bit of sweetness from the honey water these bagels are boiled in. The salmon, cream cheese, & veggies all tasted fresh as well. I assure you if you're a bagel lover, you will crave St-Viateur long after your trip to Montreal!

I'm here to settle the long-standing debate: Fairmount Bagel vs. St-Viateur Bagel.

As someone who especially enjoys bagels as sandwiches, St-Viateur takes the win for me. The bagels are fresh, flavorful, & have the perfect texture-slightly crisp on the outside while still soft & chewy inside.

The prices are very reasonable, the service is fast, & the portions are surprisingly filling, making it a great spot for a satisfying meal without breaking the bank.

We tried both the Traditional & Le Steak, served on their all-dressed bagel, & both were absolutely delicious. The combination of the fresh bagel with the sandwich fillings worked perfectly & really showcased why this place is so popular.

This is definitely a spot I'll come back to every time I visit Montreal.

Recommended items: Traditional, Le Steak (on all-dressed bagel)

We went on a weekday around 10am & the place was pretty empty. We got the traditional on sesame & it was amazing. Definitely better than any bagel you can get in Toronto.

Great service & staff as well.

It's Canadian Debit or Cash only.

Classic Montreal Bagel Experience

I stopped by St-Viateur Bagel for breakfast & went straight for their popular smoked salmon on a sesame bagel- & it was the perfect introduction to why this place is so beloved in Montreal.

The sesame bagel came warm & fresh from the wood-fired oven, with that unmistakable Montreal-style texture: slightly crisp on the outside, soft & chewy inside, & just a hint of sweetness. It paired beautifully with the smoked salmon, which was rich, flavorful, & balanced nicely by the cream cheese & traditional toppings capers & onion.

What I loved most was the simplicity done right. No frills, no over-complication- just incredibly fresh, well-crafted ingredients that speak for themselves. The staff was friendly, service was quick, & despite the constant stream of customers, everything felt smooth & welcoming.

If you're visiting Montreal or just craving a top-tier bagel breakfast, the smoked salmon on a sesame bagel at St-Viateur is a must-try. It's a classic for a reason, & I'd absolutely come back for another.

The traditional bagel is my best choice always, the only annoying thing is you have to wait outside for few

⭐ 5/5 - Absolutely Worth the Hype!
Tried the traditional sandwich at the St-Viateur Bagel Café on Mont-Royal & wow - it was super delicious. The bagel was fresh, warm, & perfectly chewy, & the whole experience felt like a Montreal essential.

The vibe is cozy, the service is quick, & the food genuinely lives up to its reputation. A must-try stop in the city!

Also, the staff were all so nice & friendly. Great job👏👏

For the record, I went on a Saturday & there was line so once i was in the wait was less than 5 minutes from the time I ordered.

Solid spot that's is worth trying. My brother & I came here in August & we had the traditional bagel sandwich (smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato, onion, capers) & it tasted pretty good, everything paired really well together. The service was mixed; we had one particularly rude employee get annoyed since we misunderstood the'bagel vs sandwich line' but the others were fine. Overall atmosphere isn't anything incredibly special but it's a decent interior & the exterior has a nice patio. For someone who wants to check off the bucket list Montreal bagels, I would definitely recommend going here.

*CASH ONLY* at St Viateur bagel

I was here on Saturday noon, & there was a long line reaching in front of BMO. This is the line for both dine it & take out. Then at the door they separate you into left or right; left for sandwiches & right for take out/buying bags. By the way I waited 45 minutes before I got to the cashier.

The cashier recommended traditional on sesame bagel $14. I searched previous reviews for anyone who's tried Courage Bagels in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, but no one seemed to have mentioned them. I absolutely LOVE Courage Bagels, so I was really excited to try Montreal-style bagels here. My hot take is the salmon lox at Courage tastes better than the traditional one at St Viateur. My reason is Courage Bagel uses a lot more seasoning, especially on the salmon. The salmon here is like barely salty, but it is very soft. The bagel itself is wonderful. (The line at Courage is atrocious.)

The other bagel I got to try is the smoked meat bagel on all-dressed bagel $14. This was one great with the mustard, but I added a bit of extra cream cheese from the salmon bagel, & it tasted even better! If I were to get it again, I would ask for cream cheese on this one.

Servers are nice & spoke English & French.

Prepare for a long line, but the bagel is worth it. I had the traditional with salmon, my only criticism would be too much cream cheese, which I wish I had asked to add less. Everything else was great!

There is a line at the door, but it moves fast. The staff are friendly & direct everyone to keep the flow moving. The bagels are fresh & flavourful, just on their own. Can add to make a sandwich based on your preference. We tried the all-dressed with cream cheese, the traditional on sesame & the rosemary & salt. A stop to try if you're in Montreal & take some to go as well !

Got the Traditional on a sesame bagel. Great sandwich spot but seating is limited & they start to hover & stare to get people in & out (which is fair to service more people but a bit awkward when you're eating).

Saturday early afternoon wait outside for 2 ppl was about 25-30 min. Traditional is a must try. No credit cards - cash or debit only.

i understand why people like Montreal bagels, but i feel like they're not necessarily WORTH the hype. i like my bagels fluffy, i realized, & the bagels are quite hard for my liking ... NONETHELESS, they were still good! we got the traditional bagels (i got the rosemary & sea salt, idk what my bf got tbh) & they were a pretty good price. $13 for each is a pretty good price considering how they could easily just rack up the price. the bagels are affordable (imo) & pretty good regardless of my bagel preference. i would definitely make it a habit to go again if i lived here. the service was also phenomenal & the staff was very kind.

One of the best places to grab Montreal style bagels. They definitely get busy but they're also quite organized so everything moves along quickly. I always come here at least once to dine in when I'm in Montreal & always leave with bags of freshly baked bagels to take back home to Toronto. I always love the traditional with all dressed bagel. A must when in Montreal!

Very very good bagel, we tried the Traditional (with Salmon & cream cheese), the WoW (with eggplant & sundried tomatoes) which was really wooww & the Plateau (with Turkey). Overall the bagel itself is a winner but I think it's a bit pricey. Consider a quick line sometimes if you wanna dine in.

THIS IS A CASH ONLY ESTABLISHMENT (Canadian OR US cash) They also take Canadian Debit cards (?) - there is some sort of debit card system but not for foreign cards. Secondly - if you want bagel sandwiches this is the only location that does it. The original St. Viateur bagel location on Rue St. Viateur DOES not do sandwiches. Overall, I thought the bagel was okay - we were told to ask to order whatever was the freshest bagel, for us that was the sesame. It was cool to see them hand rolling the bagels. The bagels are not warm for the sandwiches. I thought the traditional bagel sandwich (smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers) was alright - honestly felt like the bagel was missing flavoring (likely salt). The line outside wasn't too long, maybe took about 20 minutes to get inside & sit & eat. Not terrible. There are two lines outside, the one to the right (when facing the door) is for takeout bagels ONLY (no sandwiches) the one on the left is for sandwiches & sitting in the restaurant (can also do takeout, but you still need to stand on the line to the left). Last note, if you are HUNGRY these bagels are quite light. You can definitely eat more than one if you want to be full.
