Visited Mar 6'26 for lunch after our sight seeing from Basilica Montreal. Ordered Sand Viande Fumee, Schwartz's poutine & the pickles (cornichon). Love all of them!!!! Even I packed one more Viande Fumee for our flight to Rome. Be sure to arrive before lunch or you find yourself waiting for table.

Did you know the owner is from Italy? 😁

I mean do I really have to put a review? Literally the best ever. Everyone knows it. Absolutely no competition. If you go to Montreal & you don't eat here that's really sad. Get the pickle.

Go elsewhere for a classic Montreal smoked meat sandwich. No need to visit this place, a tourist trap all through & through. First of all the meat was dry, very fatty & tasteless. The pickle which was really soggy doesn't even come included with the sandwich (crucial mistake, smoked meat sandwiches need a pickle). The service was quite bland, employees on their phone & unwelcoming. The price for two small sandwiches & a small fry came out to 45$ which is insane for how small the sandwich was. Id recommend 5 other places in MTL for smoked meat before Shwartz.

Returning to Schwartz's after 15 years was a highlight of our trip. It is rare for an institution to not only maintain its reputation but actually exceed it-the flavour was even better than I remembered.

We visited with our two young children, & while the deli is famously compact, the staff were incredibly attentive & accommodating. They even found a place to store our stroller for us, which made a world of difference in such a bustling environment.

The smoked meat sandwich remains flawless, but the steak & poutine are equally impressive. From the quality of the meat to the perfect crunch of the pickles & coleslaw, the combination was excellent. This was my husband's first visit, & it immediately became his favorite meal of our entire journey from Mont-Tremblant.

A must-visit for anyone in Montreal, even if you're traveling with a family in tow.

I love this place. The food was obviously amazing but the service was also incredible. Our waiter was so sweet & it was such a friendly vibe all around. The food was also so quick to come out, they literally pump it out seconds after you order it. It's very cramped but in the best way. It's so fun & I loved it. The fries were also great & the seasoning they give you to put on is phenomenal. & they give you the whole bottle so you can decide how much you want which is really cool. The pickle wasn't the best but other than that it was a phenomenal lunch & I would for sure go back if I'm in Montreal again!

Food: poutine & a smoked meat sandwich with a pickle on the side. Absolutely delicious! Service: prompt & friendly. Atmosphere: nostalgic, definitely cramped & busy but didn't mind it

The line up out front tells the story. Its worth getting in line to grab a classic smoked meat sandwich. The line is organized & moves really quickly as they dont let any seats go unfilled. The sandwiches are juicy & the meat melts in your mouth. Give the pickles a try. Massive & tangy. Definitely a must try if you lije delicious meat!

Visiting Schwartz's Deli in Montreal was an incredible culinary experience that lived up to all the hype! The world-famous smoked meat sandwich is an absolute masterpiece-tender, perfectly spiced, & piled impressively high on fresh rye bread. I highly recommend ordering it'medium' for the perfect balance of flavour & juiciness, & don't forget to pair it with a classic black cherry soda & a large pickle. Despite the nearly constant queue out the door, the service is remarkably fast & the old-school atmosphere adds so much character to the meal. It is a legendary landmark for a reason, & easily some of the best comfort food I have ever tasted!

The bread is very soft, & the layers of beef are well seasoned, tender, & rich with a nice fatty aroma. Personally, I think it tastes even better with a bit more yellow mustard.

The fat distribution could be more even - some parts were a little dry & firm, while others were quite fatty.

Highly recommend having it with pickles, which really balance the richness of the beef.

Just overrated & overpriced. Pickles not included. Small sandwich. There are way better options around for the same price.

I love the food here & especially the pickles... I bought a few jars to take home about a year go & just cracked into third, but to my surprise, they were completely spoiled :( The expiration was for 2027, & my pantry is temp controlled so I don't know what went wrong with them. I would suggest the owner contact the manufacturer, as someone could eat one & get botulism.

Took our guest here to try the famous smoked meat. We went for lunch & waited about 30 minutes in line, which is normal. We were three people & all ordered the classic smoked meat sandwich with a dill pickle on the side.

Surprisingly, we got a private table, rare here since they usually seat you with others. The taste was the same as always: classic, simple, & exactly what you expect from Schwartz's.

Only thing we noticed was the bill seemed higher than previous visits, but nothing to complain about.

⭐ 4.4/5 - Iconic spot, worth trying at least once.

Memory, like smoked meat, requires the proper cure.

At Schwartz's, Montreal's famous Hebrew Deli, both have been marinating since 1928, & I've been sampling the meat & the memory since the 1960s, when my father led me through a blizzard into what appeared to be an entirely male domain wreathed in steam.

I was seven, perhaps eight. The windows were opaque with condensation, as if the deli were keeping secrets from the street. Inside: old men, everywhere. Serving, eating, talking in that particular Montreal patois where French & Yiddish & English form an uneasy trinity.

The original owner moved among them like a presiding deity who happened to know both my grandmothers. That first sandwich - strange, tangy, accompanied by what I remember as'yummy friends' (fries, presumably, though the phrase suggests a child's more profound insight about the fellowship of food) & coleslaw & pickles & a black cherry soda that tasted of artificial everything & absolute happiness.

Then the changing of the guard. New management. The windows no longer steamed. Across the street, the Main, where my uncle Jerry had landed after abandoning high school for the immediate rewards of the service industry. A pragmatic choice that probably made more sense than it should have. His offer of a free Main smoked meat couldn't lure me away from Schwartz's - the place I was smitten with.

Schwartz's endured through its transformations. By my university years, there was Frank Silva, dark-haired & mustachioed, barely older than we were, serving us at 1 a.m. with the air of someone dispensing not just smoked meat but narrative. His daughter now waits tables, another layer of sediment in the archaeological dig that is this place.

The restaurant sold again. Bought by the Nakis & Angelil-Dion families, though everyone says it's owned by Celine.

The lines grew longer, a mixed blessing, like fame. A takeout shop materialized next door, because even tradition must eventually bow to efficiency.

& now, in 2025, the final indignity: Schwartz's has been listed in the Michelin Guide. The countercultural haven where we huddled at 1 a.m., where steam obscured the windows & old men held court, has succumbed to its own fame & glory. Legitimized. Validated. Reduced to a destination for culinary tourists with their tire-company-approved itineraries. One can almost hear the ghost of the original owner sighing into his pickle barrel.

I've brought my children. They love it as my grandmothers did, as my mother did, as my father especially did & many friends we brought there. Four generations united by cured brisket & the persistence of a single address - though now we must queue alongside people consulting their phones for the Michelin star count.

What Schwartz's teaches: that some things - not many, but some - deserve to survive. That a good sandwich is a form of time travel. That inheritance isn't always genetic; sometimes it's culinary. & that recognition, like preservation, always comes at a cost.

Go. Take your children. Let the smoke & spice seep into them as it has into the walls, into the city, into all of us who return again & again to this shrine of meat & memory. Just don't tell them it's in the Michelin Guide.

This place came highly recommended & it did not disappoint. A very old-school deli/diner style. I ordered the smoked meat sandwich, the pickle & a cherry cola. This food was well priced & tasty 😋🤤. Love classic style joints like Schwartzes & would recommend.

Old school, crowded, absolutely worth going. Meat is excellent. Fries & pickles are good too. Really glad we stopped in for a bite while we were exploring.

I wanted to recreate the Montreal Layover episode by Anthony Bourdain. We got the smoked meat sandwich, a pickle, & cherry coke. It is now my gold standard for smoked meat. Wonderful.

Montreal smoked meat was divine. Fries were pretty underseasoned & a bit overcooked but the sandwich made up for it. Pickle was meh. The line moves fast but it is an endeavor...
