I have eaten at Stage & Carnegie in NewYork. I ate at the famous Katz Deli.
I'm from Chicago & Manny's Deli in the South Loop was a favorite. I thought better than the New York spots.
All it took was one bite of the smoked meat medium fatty… & every other spot immediately took a back seat. It literally melts in your mouth. Delicious! Wow!
I have been a vegetarian for 12 years, I went to Shwartz's deli last night & had the sandwhich & it was the best thing I think I've ever eaten.. Immediately back to no meat, because what can compare? Definitely get a sour pickle & the black cherry drink with your sandwhich - absolutely stunning combo.
There was a long queue, but it moved pretty quickly & to be honest I'd have waited longer for this sandwhich.
Honestly, it was okay. I can see why it's such a popular spot, & I'm glad we tried it, but it didn't really stand out for me. I've been to a few different deli shops in both New York & Montreal, & while the food here was good, it wasn't anything particularly remarkable compared to others I've had.
The front-end staff also weren't the most accommodating or friendly when we visited, even though it was just after opening, so the overall experience felt a little underwhelming.
That said, it's still worth trying at least once if you're in Montreal..it's an iconic place with a lot of history. It just didn't quite live up to the hype for me.
Omg so good. We'll be back. Met a couple that comes here from LA every summer for their sandwiches. Thenwaitersnare great & the atmosphere is classic. What a deli sandwich. Save room for poutine!
The smoked meat is really delicious, although the sandwich is more like a plate of meat with bread ...it wasn't really sandwich shaped & requires a knife & fork....but still really delicious!! If you go in to sit down the look is probably the same it's had for 50 years, which is fun, but it is loud & crowded. You end up eating elbow to elbow with other guests, so that's its own experience. We stood in line for about 30 minutes & I didn't really feel like it was worth standing in a line on the sidewalk. If I get to go back, & I definitely would go back, I'm going to go out of my way to visit when I don't have to wait.
We had the popular #2 & #4. I will go back for #1 soon, hopefully. Very nice people providing a no nonsense service with a smile. Waited in line outside & ended up sitting at the bar. Delicious meat. Very happy I finally made it here after 4 trips to Montreal. Highly recommend it to all visitors
I'll admit the food was amazing. The smoked meat sandwiches are incredible. My children loved the poutine as well. We bought a big jar of the delicious pickles to take home as well.
Most of the employees were great. Especially the nice guys making our sandwiches. However I was quite disappointed with another employee there. As my husband & I were getting our orders at the counter we asked our kids to get a free table at the back of the deli so we could relieve the congestion in the lineup. As they were waiting one of the employees started raising their voice to my oldest questioning why they were there. She was in tears when we brought them their food. I understand the place is busy & high stress but it's no excuse to be unkind to people let alone children just waiting for their food.
Hands down one of the best sandwiches that I have ever had. The Poutine was delicious. Line wrapped around the corner but worth the 50 minute. The food comes out super fast.
