Absolutely worth waiting in line first for the food, second for the service & atmosphere. We recommend the plate, with bread, pickles, & for sure order the coleslaw. Add mustard. The famous soda is a perfect accompaniment.
This place is the mecca of Montreal meat for a reason. Yes, we stood in line for the better part of an hour, but it was absolutely worth it. Service was quick, the quality of product was high, the server was charming... Plus, meat! & yes, the black cherry soda by Fleischers is the way.
I have been a vegetarian for 12 years, I went to Shwartz's deli last night & had the sandwhich & it was the best thing I think I've ever eaten.. Immediately back to no meat, because what can compare? Definitely get a sour pickle & the black cherry drink with your sandwhich - absolutely stunning combo.
There was a long queue, but it moved pretty quickly & to be honest I'd have waited longer for this sandwhich.
I came here 9 years & returned today. The line wasn't too long thankfully for a Thursday. We waited maybe 20ish minutes as a group of 3? We all got the number 4 with pickles & coleslaw. My mother who is a picky eater loves the pickles here. This place is a classic MUST for when visiting Montreal. The staff are so lovely considering how busy it is, too.
Honestly, it was okay. I can see why it's such a popular spot, & I'm glad we tried it, but it didn't really stand out for me. I've been to a few different deli shops in both New York & Montreal, & while the food here was good, it wasn't anything particularly remarkable compared to others I've had.
The front-end staff also weren't the most accommodating or friendly when we visited, even though it was just after opening, so the overall experience felt a little underwhelming.
That said, it's still worth trying at least once if you're in Montreal..it's an iconic place with a lot of history. It just didn't quite live up to the hype for me.
