I'll admit the food was amazing. The smoked meat sandwiches are incredible. My children loved the poutine as well. We bought a big jar of the delicious pickles to take home as well.
Most of the employees were great. Especially the nice guys making our sandwiches. However I was quite disappointed with another employee there. As my husband & I were getting our orders at the counter we asked our kids to get a free table at the back of the deli so we could relieve the congestion in the lineup. As they were waiting one of the employees started raising their voice to my oldest questioning why they were there. She was in tears when we brought them their food. I understand the place is busy & high stress but it's no excuse to be unkind to people let alone children just waiting for their food.
Well this is a historic place for the smoked meat in whole Canada & I tried the smoked meat sandwich. It was genuinely very juicy & tasty. The quantity was huge in the $17 overall bill. It can satisfy one person appetite for sure. It is a must try for lasting memories if you come to Montreal. I had also ordered their French fries 🍟 but those were not very classic & had gone through over deep frying I felt. To be noted part is that there is no parking available on that busy place, but we all know whole Montreal has limited parking spaces.
I was worried this place wouldn't live up to the hype, but I was wrong. Ordered both the sandwich & poutine & both were amazing. I'll be dreaming about this place for a long time. It was busy but the lineup moved fast & we were happy to be seated at the counter where they were busy serving to hungry diners. Highly recommended.

If you want Montreal smoked meat, this is the place to get it. In addition to the classic sandwich, you can also forgo the silly bread & just opt for a plate of smoked meat. Yes, smoked meat poutine is also a thing here. This place does get pretty busy, so if there's a long line, consider grabbing something to go from their take-out location (literally right next door to the main restaurant).
If you're visiting Montreal, this place is a must!
I tried the famous smoked beef sandwich with a pickle on the side. It's such a traditional experience, & I can definitely see why people line up for it. There was a long queue, but it was absolutely worth the wait.
The dine-in area was very busy, & everyone was seated quite close together, which added to the classic, old-school atmosphere.
What impressed me the most was the staff. They were incredibly polite, attentive, & organized. Even with such a packed restaurant, they paid attention to everyone & made sure everything was running smoothly.
As for the food-it was amazing. I genuinely loved the flavor, & I'm not even joking when I say I could have eaten five sandwiches! We each ordered one, & by the time we finished, we wished we had ordered another.
I also really liked that they separated the takeout & dine-in lines. It made everything much more organized & efficient.
Whenever I'm back in Montreal, I definitely won't miss this place.
If you never been here, your loss. Staple of Montreal gastronomy. The only place where smoke is good for you as long as it is preceded by meat. Sometimes the lineup goes down the street, so be prepared to wait on busy days. They never disappoint.
Schwartz is worth the visit. The food was absolutely delicious, the cost our meal & some meat to go was over $100 with a tip. With the cost of beef in 2026 I'm not going to complain about the cost of our meal because it was worth every penny.
We chose to go early before the lunch rush & sit at the counter instead of a table. The fellas working there were a riot. The banter between them all was worth the price of the meal alone. They told us some fun facts we did not know about the place & one of the guys had worked there on & off for 27 years & how he now only works one day a week as he works as an Electrician during the week (& a male stripper by night as claimed by his coworkers)
I see a few complaints about the atmosphere, we really enjoyed it & I'm someone that cannot stand busy, tight spaces. I feel like the old & outdated space is part of the charm of a place that is almost 100 years old.
This place absolutely lived up to the hype. The smoked meat was tender, flavorful, & piled high on every sandwich. Every bite was packed with flavor, & the portions were huge.
The poutine was also excellent & paired perfectly with the sandwiches. Despite how busy it was, the service moved quickly & the overall experience felt like a must-do Montreal food stop.

If you're in Montreal, this place is an absolute must. The smoked beef is honestly the best I've ever had, rich, tender, & packed with flavor. It's totally worth waiting in line, even if it takes a while. Despite the constant crowds, the service is impressively fast & efficient. Just be prepared: the place is always extremely busy & there's barely any room to even walk around. Still, the food makes it completely worth it.
Attempted to go inside but line was too long so went in to their take out section. They were quite busy, but staff was borderline rude & there was a lot of variation between everyone's sandwiches in our group, some full of meat & some barely a sandwich. Mine was very disappointing & basically just scraps & mostly fat. I will give it another try next time in Montreal & hopefully not on a busy Habs game day Saturday. But for my first experience at this iconic deli, I was disappointed to say the least.
