My first time back in 20 years was extremely disappointing. While waiting in the takeout line on the sidewalk, a very rude employee put his hand in my face, closed the door & said not to come inside until there was more room. The smoked meat was not prepared properly, all I tasted was tons of salt, & the bread pieces were so small - the slices of rye looked like they'd been halved - it was impossible to pick as a sandwich. I paid $17 for that. One of the framed articles at the back said the latest owner tried to make improvements, encouraging employees to be more friendly, to not put off tourists. It's not working. I won't be back. Fix your recipe & your attitude please.
If you want Montreal smoked meat, this is the place to get it. In addition to the classic sandwich, you can also forgo the silly bread & just opt for a plate of smoked meat. Yes, smoked meat poutine is also a thing here. This place does get pretty busy, so if there's a long line, consider grabbing something to go from their take-out location (literally right next door to the main restaurant).
It's so good! It has a smoky flavor & melts in your mouth, though it can get a bit heavy towards the end. Definitely eat it while it's hot & fresh, as it can start to feel a little greasy once it cools down.
We arrived around 7:30 PM, & the queue was so long that we decided to order takeaway instead. It only took about 5 minutes to get our food!
Best smoked meat sandwich of all time! Turnover is quite fast, we waited for 15m-ish for Sunday lunch. We always get the plate of meat to make our own sandwiches. Our server recommend cherry soda & I am glad I took his words. Great pair with the sandwich. Can't wait to go back there next time I visit Montreal
Mandatory stop for me whenever I am in the city. The smoke meat is a must try. The lines can get pretty insane so I would try to go early or off times but its definitely worth the hype. Dont forget to the Cherry Soda with your meal!
Ein muss für jeden Montreal Besuch.
Lasst euch nicht verwirren, die Speisen sind super Lecker. Das ambiente eher in die Jahre gekommen
Decided to try this after all the hype & I regret every second of it. Cold disgusting meat, rotten pickle, & terrible rude service. Never again
If you're visiting Montreal, this place is a must!
I tried the famous smoked beef sandwich with a pickle on the side. It's such a traditional experience, & I can definitely see why people line up for it. There was a long queue, but it was absolutely worth the wait.
The dine-in area was very busy, & everyone was seated quite close together, which added to the classic, old-school atmosphere.
What impressed me the most was the staff. They were incredibly polite, attentive, & organized. Even with such a packed restaurant, they paid attention to everyone & made sure everything was running smoothly.
As for the food-it was amazing. I genuinely loved the flavor, & I'm not even joking when I say I could have eaten five sandwiches! We each ordered one, & by the time we finished, we wished we had ordered another.
I also really liked that they separated the takeout & dine-in lines. It made everything much more organized & efficient.
Whenever I'm back in Montreal, I definitely won't miss this place.
See you again, guys! 😉
The last time I visited this place was in 2016, & I'm happy to say the atmosphere hasn't changed. It still has the same warm, nostalgic charm that makes it a memorable spot.
Unfortunately, I felt the food wasn't quite as good as I remembered. The portions seemed smaller, & some of the meat was a little dry. Despite that, it's still a classic place with a unique atmosphere, & I'd recommend it to anyone visiting Montreal for the experience.
