Review Summary

Onigiri Shop is widely noted for its large, satisfying onigiri with a variety of fillings such as spicy salmon, spicy tuna, Korean fried chicken, and beef miso, with reviewers highlighting generous portions that feel affordable for a quick meal. The St Denis location is popular among students and benefits from promotions, and the ordering process is straightforward: order at the counter, receive a pager, and seat yourself while meals come out quickly. The atmosphere is simple and clean, with a casual vibe and often wooden bowls that feel high quality. The rice is described as soft and well cooked, wrapped in seaweed with a generous center, though a few comments mention rice that was old or overly salty and some onigiri that fell apart, indicating occasional inconsistency. Overall the onigiri are the star and the place is seen as a budget friendly, comforting option for a fast bite, with additional items like miso soup and drinks valued by many, while some caution is advised for those with fish allergies due to cross contamination.

We had been wanting to try Onigiri Shop for some time. We really appreciate that the St-Denis location offers various promotions. It's probably why this location is so well-loved by students & the younger crowd. Here, you order at the counter, receive a pager that beeps when your order is ready, & seat yourself at one of the tables. There aren't too many tables available, however people eat quickly so you shouldn't have to wait more than 15-20 minutes to dine-in. We have tried the classic flavours such as spicy salmon, spicy tuna, Korean fried chicken, & beef miso. Initially we thought 5$ for an onigiri was on the pricier side, however these onigiris are huge, much larger than the standard ones in Japan. We would say two onigiris should be filling enough for one person. The staff was friendly & the onigiri came out fast, within 3-5 minutes. Highly recommend if you're in the area for a cheap, simple, & yummy meal.

This was a truly ideal experience for us. Needed to grab a quick lunch before getting a bus. Combo included a wonderful stuffed Onigiri ( we had salmon, spiced Tuns & miso beef) all were wonderful- miso soup was beautifully balanced-warm mocha drink was so tasty- had coconut milk in it & was served in an insulated cup so it was still warm after 8 min. All plates bowls & utensils were wood so it felt so high quality. Service very pleasant & clear.
Highly recommend!

The shop is simple & no-frills, but clean & comfortable. It wasn't too crowded when I went.

I ordered a Korean fried chicken onigiri & a salmon one. The onigiri are huge, one is already very filling, & two is honestly too much (too good) for someone like me. But they're so good (I cant stop eating). The rice is cooked perfectly: soft, slightly sticky, not dry at all, wrapped in seaweed with a generous filling in the center.

Each onigiri is around $5, which feels very reasonable considering the size. Big, affordable, & satisfying. I also ordered a small ramen with miso broth. It was okay, but the onigiri is really the star here, simple, but peak comfort food.

Orders come out fast, around 3-5 minutes. I've officially become an onigiri addict after this place. Highly recommend if you're visiting Montreal, cheap, simple, & delicious. I'll probably come back a thousand more times whenever I'm in town.

I tried the beef & the spicy salmon. Both are really good, though the beef is much saltier than the salmon so that there's an imbalance when you have them both at once. Service was fast & efficient.

This is a cute shop & the onigiri are delicious & huge. My child has egg, fish, shellfish, peanut & tree nut allergies. He was able to eat the vege mix, & shiitake mushroom onigiris. Although he didn't enjoy the vege mix one as much. We ordered the eel, shrimp tempura, ramen egg, salmon & avocado onigiris, also edamame as well, for the rest of us. All were delicious. There are 4-5 tables, each table fits 2. Place doesn't have AC so it does get warm in the summer. We went there 3x when we visited Montreal, all were takeout, that's how much we enjoyed the food there! Will definitely be go back if we are in the area again.

I've been to this location multiple times & will keep coming for more. The inside is very cutely decorated & very clean (which is important when handling raw ingredients). The staff is lovely & serves you with a smile.

The onigiris taste amazing & have a great selections of filling. They crumble a little bit in your hands sometimes, but it's manageable. I personally recommend anything with salmon. The matcha tiramisu was also amazing! Definitely go for that.

Overall, a cute & casual spot for a quick lunch in between classes.
