Review Summary

Reviews portray Monarque as a stylish French dining spot in Old Montreal with two atmospheres, a lively brasserie and a refined Salle a Manger, where the menu leans into seafood and beef favorites such as bone marrow with escargots, foie gras, bouillabaisse, duck confit, venison, ribeye and lobster, all paired with an extensive wine list and inventive cocktails. The service is frequently described as attentive, knowledgeable and warm, though a few visits mention slower pacing, inconsistent attention or language hiccups. The ambiance blends elegance with a bustling energy, and reservations are often recommended to secure preferred seating; some guests note noise levels when busy, while others praise the kitchen display and the modern yet classic decor. Across many reviews Monarque is regarded as a standout Montreal dining experience and a reliable choice for special occasions or a memorable night out, though a minority feel value or dessert quality could be better.

Service was fantastic. Some of the best I've ever experienced. All servers are very attentive at Monarque.

Food was tasty. I got the trout tartare, octopus, & lamb dish. My favourite was the trout tartare. It's divine - very fresh & full of unique textures & flavours. The other two dishes were good but too salty for my personal preference. Everything served was made of high quality ingredients, beautifully presented, & made with intentionality.

In terms of ambiance, Monarque is well decorated & sophisticated but lacks cozyness. I felt that the temperature of the restaurant could have been slightly warmer & lights dimmer. The lighting especially in the Brasserie is far too bright. I was noticed it as soon as I walked in.

We had an amazing night dinning here. There was a great selection of creative dishes but they also have classic ones which tasted fantastic as well. I especially liked the aged steak, it had great texture & great flavours. The balance between fat & meat was great, the mix of chewiness & softness was great as well & the pepper sauce that came with the steak complemented it quite nicely. The duck was pretty delicious too! The crispy skin paired so well with the tender meat & the flavours were nice as well. The service on the other hand varies quite a lot. We had a warm welcome initially from the waitresses & then some waiters were quite clumsy & rough which made it a bit less enjoyable. The contrast was too big not too notice. The atmosphere itself was great. There were so many customers that were enjoying the food, the vibe was just great. I do feel like the tables are a bit small making it feel a bit cramped but it was still quite nice.

Last night on Valentine's day was my first experience in Monarque restaurant.
The restaurant has a very nice atmosphere.
Our waitress was so nice & helpful.
We asked for a Medium cook for our steak; however, it was not cooked well (to my taste at least). I found the crust of our steak especially on the sides to be burnt. I've had better quality of steak with more reasonable prices in many other restaurants.
I mentioned this to the manager & she had a nice behaviour towards my comment which I truly appreciated.
Overall, I found the restaurant to be a nice spot with nice staff, but it wasn't worth the price at least to me ($520 for two!!).

We visited for the Valentine's Day fixed-price menu & unfortunately had one of the worst dining experiences we've had. Maybe if you go there for normal dinner it would be good, but this is the first time I had such a bad experience to the point of leaving the restaurant feeling unwell.

To start with the positives: the meats & fish were actually cooked very well. The veal was perfectly tender, & the fish was flaky without being overcooked. The servers were also attentive - our water was always refilled promptly, & the staff were polite. The drinks were excellent as well! I would genuinely consider coming back just for cocktails.

That said, the overall four-course experience fell short for us. Nearly every dish was overwhelmed by sauce that was either aggressively sour or overwhelmingly salty, to the point that it completely overpowered the well-cooked proteins. The flavors were so intense & unbalanced that we felt physically nauseous by the end & rushed out of the restaurant to get back to our hotel. Also, the table next to us ordered the bass, & I love fish, but it smelt so unpleasantly fishy that I was turned off.

There was also a grapefruit & orange'house soup' served before the main dish, intended to refresh the palate. It was odd to us because there was also what tasted like a lemon sherbet in the soup. The bitterness & acidity felt harsh & actually triggered acid reflux for both of us. Plus, the transition from a warm appetizer to a very cold soup & then back to a warm main course was very off-putting.

On top of everything, portion sizes were surprisingly small. I understand that tasting menus are structured differently, & I've enjoyed similar experiences at other restaurants without issue. This was the first time I've left a multi-course meal hungrier than when I arrived.

One additional disappointment was the seating. Even though the restaurant was about half empty when we arrived, we were seated right next to the only other occupied table. We asked to move as soon as we sat down, but were told that no other tables were available. About 10 minutes later, a couple was seated next to us & made the same request & were accommodated. There may have been a reason for this, but from our perspective, it left a poor impression.

Perhaps the regular menu is better however, for a special Valentine's dinner, I would say don't waste your time & money.

The food & service were excellent. I recommend the wild mushroom gnocci & the braised veal cheeks, the flavours & the meat tenderness are unreal. If you can, ask for a table facing the kitchen in the brasserie, those are the best spots. Finally, we very much appreciated that the payment terminal didn't have preset tipping amounts. We will definitely come back soon.

A beautiful brasserie with a refined, classic atmosphere. The space is elegant & very Montréal. Polished & quietly upscale.
I ordered a mocktail as I wasn't feeling well; service was discreet & reserved, very much in a European style. We shared the octopus, which was tender & well prepared. The steak frites were good & properly executed, satisfying, though not extraordinary.
Overall, a pleasant experience in a lovely setting. Worth visiting for the ambiance & solid brasserie fare.

Monarque is truly an outstanding dining experience. The food is delicious, refined, & beautifully presented, & the ambiance strikes a perfect balance between elegance & comfort. Every detail in the setting makes the evening feel special without being pretentious.
The staff is attentive, warm, & professional from start to finish. The team makes you feel genuinely welcome & well taken care of.
A final detail that deserves praise is the way the bill is handled. When the server brought the payment machine, the tip options were presented in a respectful & flexible way, with clear suggested amounts & percentages, without the usual sense of pressure that often comes with the typical North American tipping prompts. It felt considerate & customer friendly.
An excellent restaurant on every level, & definitely worth visiting again.

Great Saturday night dinner at Monarque. Beautiful restaurant, bustling with people & great energy. We ate in the Brasserie. The food, wine, service, & overall vibe were all excellent. For starters, our table of four shared the octopus & trout tartare with such fresh bread.& butter that was so good we had two servings. The mains were delicious tuna & the lamb special served with vegetables & potatoes that melted in your mouth. Dessert was an excellent tartine, the combination of apples & ice cream was perfect & so yum. We also enjoyed a really nice bottle of red wine. Just an all-around great night.

Wow, wow, wow !
