This review is for the Brasserie. I especially wanted to try this place to get my foie gras fix & it was really good! I only wish the foie gras & the bread were served warm. The bone marrow with snails was also good, but the combination was a little weird. I liked the bone marrow. I liked the snails. But served together took away from enjoying each part on its own.
The duck was roasted to perfection. The skin was so crispy & the meat just fell off the bone. Same goes for the braised veal cheeks. There was no bone to fall off of, but the meat was so tender & just came apart as soon as I pressed down with my knife.
I can't wait to come back to try the Salle à Manger since it's a different menu.
Foie gras parfait 8/10
Bone marrow, Burgundy snails 8/10
Braised veal cheeks 9/10
Duck confit 9/10
Heard such good thing about this resto so booked a table at the brasserie. We ordered the bone marrow, ravioli, steak & the special of the day which was lamb shoulder. All dishes were well seasoned & delicious. Honestly for the quality & portion, I think the price is VERY reasonable especially for a restaurant in the old port. I really enjoyed the richness of the bone marrow & the steak was perfectly cooked & seasoned. Dare I say better than Gibbys. The fries were also perfectly crispy & seasoned. The lamb shoulder was also fabulous!! Would recommend the steak & bone marrow. Service was also very accommodating. Will come back again for a night out with friends or for a date.
Menu côté brasserie est plus intéressant que le côté salle a manger.Beau décor, belle ambiance.
Two Dining Experiences at Monarque: Exceptional & Very Good (Overall Rating: 4.5/5)
?My spouse & I enjoyed our Monarque experience, particularly the evening we spent in the Salle à Manger. The food there was truly exceptional; each dish was thoughtfully presented, deeply flavorful, & easily the memorable highlight of our visit.
?The Brasserie also offered very good food, though it didn't quite match the high standard set by the Salle à Manger.
?Regarding service, our main server in the Salle à Manger was attentive & dedicated, & their efforts were genuinely appreciated.
In the Brasserie there were some minor language barriers with our main server & a small missed opportunity to offer us an additional glass of wine.
?One suggestion, which would have made our Brasserie visit as spectacular as the Salle à Manger, is to ensure that all diners, especially those with language or cultural differences, feel especially welcomed & catered to.
Overall, staff made us feel warmly welcomed & comfortable, giving us an exceptional dining experience at Monarque.

Exécution à la perfection: entrées exquises, cuisson à la perfection, ambiance chaleureuse, & service impeccable. Dans le haut de gamme, le Monarche offre une excellente valeur. On était du côté brasserie. Je recommande!
We ate from the brasserie menu-what a delicious meal with perfectly timed, attentive service. We had the bone marrow, which was easily the best bite of our trip to Montréal (best bite of food I've had this year), & I had the duck, which was so savory & crispy & tender. My husband had the swordfish special, which was lovely, but we agreed that my duck was the clear winner. We split a mille feuille for dessert, which ticked all the boxes that a dessert should! The restaurant space is beautiful & I would love to go back & try the full tasting menu/sit in front of the window into the kitchen.
5 ime visite ici & ca reste notre resto préféré.
Nous sommes côté brasserie. Service chaleureux.
Nourriture impeccable.
Tout est délicieux !
Mon gars de 4 ans avait adoré son repas également.
We recently visited Monarque & really enjoyed our meal. A note for future diners: when making reservations, be mindful that Monarque has two distinct menus-one is a more casual brasserie/tapas style, & the other is a formal sit-down menu. We opted for the formal dining room this time.
The plating was beautiful, & the food was delicious overall. I tried the guinea fowl, which was executed nicely, though the accompanying sauce was a touch too salty for my taste. My in-laws ordered the large rib of beef to share, which came with a salad of endives & patates dauphinoises (so delicious, & yes, very buttery).
Service was attentive without being rushed, & the atmosphere made for a great evening out with family. We would definitely return to try the brasserie section next time, which looks like it offers a wider selection on the menu.
(Late review, we went in Feb 2025.)
We did not expect to like this restaurant as much as we did! It's our new'coup de coeur'. Booked a table online for the bar section (brasserie), which was surprisingly easy.
Everything was delicious & the service was efficient. The cocktails were great, creative, & perfectly adapted to the dishes. The bone marrow dish is a must, with the richness of the marrow perfectly balanced by the acidity of the red wine jus, & the crunchiness of the toast underneath. I'm still dreaming about that dish! The pepper sauce of the pork chops was fantastic, a nice Asian twist to its classical version. Bouillabaisse was very good, if one likes this type of fish stew. The seafood inside was plentiful. The rouille served on toast was a tasty accompaniment. Highly recommend their tea-flavored crème brûlée. The pistachio cake was good, but not a standout.
Overall, we were very impressed by this restaurant's food pairing. The portions were also generous, & the price fair, for such a restaurant. It's on our favorites list now!
Expectations were high but they were definitely met. Food, service & atmosphere all terrific. I will visit again next trip as well as their Brasserie side.
We were really looking forward to our dinner at Monarque after glowing recommendations from friends who had lived in Montreal. We booked the Brasserie months in advance during a conference trip-but sadly, the experience didn't live up to expectations.
The Brasserie was only half full, yet service was slow & inattentive. Our server, while polite, barely engaged with us & seemed more focused on older or more formally dressed guests. It took 45 minutes just to place our order, & no one asked if we wanted drinks.
We ordered gougères (delicious), olives, & croquettes to start-followed by excellent appetizers (bone marrow with snails, & octopus). Mains were beautifully plated but uneven: the duck confit was overly salty & unbalanced, though the ribeye & halibut were solid.
The worst part? A fellow diner changed their toddler in plain view of the room-& no staff intervened. It felt like Brasserie guests weren't treated with the same care as those in the Salle à Manger, which seemed much livelier.
We still tipped well, but didn't feel the service earned it. Disappointed overall-we won't be returning.
I'm captivated by the two menus, one for the front of the house & another for the back. The brasserie's rendition of French bistro cuisine truly resonates with me because it's so straightforward & authentic to the style.
Dining at Monarque was a memorable experience. We got reservations for the brasserie, which was very nice inside but more casual than a strict fine dining environment, & had nice views of the kitchen. Staff were attentive & professional the whole night, & the coat check was nice. For cocktails, the Lady Marmalade was my favorite for a juicy option, or the oddjob otherwise. The spritz mocktail was a little underwhelming, & tasted more like a seltzer. Appetizers vary in size, so check with the server if you want to share. The prosciutto salad was lovely, it had just enough flavor between the salty meat & touch of dressing, & a mix of textures from the almond. Recommend the wild mushroom gnocchi as a delicious vegetarian appetizer, & the lamb with the ravioli was indulgently tender. The duck was fantastic: flavorful & perfectly cooked. The lamb was also just the right amount done, not overly heavy but rich with the sauce. The cornish hen was good, though not remarkable. I liked their rendition of bouillabaisse. I highly suggest the tarte tatin as a shareable appetizer for two or three people, it had soft spiced apples & a flakey crust. The peach cobbler was delicious, & the mango pavolva was very fresh- the mango topping was tart, which I personally much prefer. I might like the center a little more done in the pavlova. My meal here felt cohesive, & in the brasserie I could pick & choose from a variety of options. I highly recommend Monarque for a nice occasion, its also quite accessible from the underground city if you want to walk there in the winter months.
Great dinner & drinks spot. The food is incredible & the portion size was huge! Service staff were very helpful, polite, & quick. It's a very busy & popular spot so get a reservation. We chose the Brasseries over the Dining Room just based on the menu & we weren't disappointed with our choice. I'm sure the Dining Room is good too though! Cocktails are well done too!
Great staff, excellent food & wine. 1 star Michelin comparable for Brasserie where I had this diner. Salle à manger may go beyond...
Exceptional food, ambience & service. Restaurant has to sections: formal sit down & more chilled brasserie. Food is phenomenal throughout. vast wine selection & great cocktails. Best meal we've had in a while from start to finish.
Great experience. It's pricey but we really enjoyed it. Pretty formal & upscale vibes with a huge wine selection. We sat in the dining room (menu is very different from the bar) & had the scallop crudo, grilled sweetbreads & the cote de bouef for 2. Our server was attentive but not intrusive which was great. Did a good job of explaining the menu & helping pick a wine. Fair warning - if you get the cote de bouef you may want to consider not ordering from every course as the portion is massive! It was a perfectly cooked giant steak with really great potatoes au gratin & a simple salad. Would like to go back & try the brasserie menu as that looked excellent as well.
