Review Summary

Overall, reviews of La Sauvagine describe a warm, inviting spot in Old Montreal where the food frequently shines with a range of French and Portuguese influenced dishes, from oysters and escargots to foie gras and game meats like elk, bison and caribou, plus seafood and comforting classics such as onion soup. The wine list is noted as thoughtful and well chosen, and the atmosphere ranges from cozy and intimate to romantic, with attentive staff who explain dishes, accommodate requests, and make diners feel at home. While most comments are highly positive about hospitality and the quality of the meals, a few mentions point to occasional service hiccups or moments of miscommunication. Many guests return to try different items, appreciating consistency and the sense that dining here is an experience rather than a routine, and the overall impression is that La Sauvagine offers a memorable evening with strong, friendly service and robust flavors.

If I could give 10 stars I would.
One thing certain, the food quality & It was my first day in Montreal, & after hours of walking in the cold, I was starving. 😉 My friend & I searched for a good place to eat but ended up hesitating over a restaurant with mixed reviews. Still, once I saw the photos, my instincts told me it would be worth it. & as it turned out, I couldn't have been more right.
Getting there, however, felt like a heroic journey. Finding parking was nearly impossible, & walking through Montreal's winter chill was brutal. Yet we powered through - mostly thanks to my friend, the true foodie of the two of us. 😂
From the moment we stepped inside, the experience was unforgettable. This was hands down one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. Their menu featured different seasonal meats - bison, deer, & even liver pâté made from another kind I couldn't quite name. I'm no food expert, but trust me, it was incredible. We ordered escargot wrapped in a delicate pastry, duck liver, leg, & breast, plus lobster with rice. We finished about 90% of everything - a rare feat for us.
But what truly set this place apart was the people. There's something magical about Montrealers. Maybe it's the season or maybe it's just who they are, but everyone carried this effortless grace - doing something magnificent with such casual charm. The customer service was impeccable. I'm not sure if the restaurant is family-run, but every staff member radiated warmth & sincerity, treating each guest like an old friend. They explained every dish with care, replaced plates promptly with warm ones, & arranged each utensil meticulously.
All evening, I felt like royalty. My gin cocktail sparkled with the perfect touch of gold, & soft classical music in the background gave the night a fairytale feel.
For the quality, the price - around $200 - felt more than fair. Watching how comfortably the regulars interacted with the staff, it almost seemed like they were dining in their own kitchen. That sense of intimacy & hospitality made the night even more special.
Truly, this restaurant deserves a gold medal - not just for its outstanding food, but for the kind of customer service that turns a meal into a memory.

My waitress was a nice lady with the loveliest smile. I forgot to ask for her name but I promise to give a shout-out, amazing suggestions & experience she provided.

Was a wonderful evening. Probably been here 10 times over 25 years. Special place. Had the trio. Elk, Bison & Deer. Quality. They don't disappoint. Food was done exactly to my liking. Service was spot on tonight. Excellent. Can't put a price on such a marvelous romantic evening.

My girlfriend & I attended this restaurant for my Birthday & unfortunately it was rather disappointing. But before criticizing, let me give a few positive points. The restaurant decorations were nice, it was romantic & the location being in the Old Port of Montreal was quite nice. The service was okay, but nothing amazing. Now the bad part: in a nutshell, the restaurant lacked the attention to detail I would expect from a higher class restaurant. It all started with the bread, which was the same quality you get on an airplane. The appetizers were pricey but not very good (scallops & salmon mousse) & the biggest disappointment was the main course.

The restaurant's speciality is supposed to be wild game & this is the main reason why we went to the restaurant was to try their three-game special. Unfortunately the sauces on the meat were not flavourful & the quality of the meat was unforgivable. Not only was the meat poorly cooked, the meat quality was very rough & almost un-chewable. My girlfriend & I were having to spit out pieces of meat in a fancy restaurant, not very appealing in my opinion.

We made a complaint to the waiter & they did not do anything about the poor quality of the food. Pretty disappointing. I would suggest going elsewhere.
