Beautiful restaurant with a unique atmosphere, like an elegant tavern, with its old beams & walls. I can get a big noisy when busy.

Service was top notch from our server. They even took a Polaroid photo of us, when they learned it was my birthday.

Food wise, the wedge salad with blue cheese dressing is excellent. We were a bit disappointed by the Monte Carlo potato, it felt a bit'old' & wasn't as tasty as you might imagine. The beef wellington was excellent, I'll definitely re-order that in a future visit. The ribeye let us down.. The cook was fine, but it wasn't as tasty as I would have liked.

For desserts, we had the crème brûlée, it was so so, the cream wasn't perfectly smooth, it was a bit grainy.

Overall, we still had a great night, & Gibbys serves solid food in a unique atmosphere

Very disappointing experience.
The server made multiple mistakes with our order & then simply split the total bill evenly among us, even though we all ordered different items. I ended up paying for food I didn't even eat, which is unacceptable.
We were also pressured to tip 15-20% despite the poor service.
The food was not good either - the Beef Wellington was soft & lacked texture, the salmon was overly greasy, & even the salad felt heavy.
Overpriced & poorly managed. Would not recommend.

Wow, what an experience in Old Montreal. Our server Mary was stellar, food was spectacular & you can not beat the atmosphere. We took our time & enjoyed every minute starting with wedge salad & ending with Irish coffee made table side. Generally portions. It's pricey but well worth the experience. This is a good reason why Montreal is so wonderful.

Overall Impression:

Gibby's is one of those places you've heard about forever, almost myth-like in reputation… long before you ever actually go. For me, it had been sitting in that category for years.

With my brother visiting (a true steak connoisseur), it finally felt like the right time. I booked a table for five on OpenTable a few weeks in advance for a 7:45 seating… no issues at all.

From the moment we arrived, the experience felt dialed in. We were seated right on time, service was immediate, & the evening flowed exactly the way you hope a place like Gibby's will deliver.

What I Liked:

Service was a standout. Attentive, engaged, but never hovering or interrupting. Drinks came quickly, orders were taken efficiently, & everything arrived with great timing.

A really nice touch to start the meal was the bread & pickles brought to the table. The bread was light, fluffy, & fresh with a great texture, & the pickles were a hit around the table… simple, but done right.

Food-wise, we leaned into what Gibby's is known for… steak.
• The rib steak was exactly what you want it to be: cooked perfectly, rich, & deeply satisfying.
• Wedge salad & Monte Carlo potatoes rounded things out well.
• Across the table, rib eyes, filet, clam chowder, carpaccio-most dishes fully met expectations.

Now… did I need a 20 oz rib steak? Absolutely not.
Did I regret it? Only later that night, when my stomach started filing complaints.
In the moment? Not a chance. Plate cleaned. No survivors.

A fun highlight was the Spanish coffee service, rolled out tableside with a bit of fire & flair. A small touch, but one that adds to the overall experience.

& oddly… even the bill stood out. Thick, high-quality paper. It sounds ridiculous, but it actually matched the overall feel of the place… attention to detail, even at the very end.

That said, one miss worth noting, my wife's peppercorn steak was significantly undercooked & came out rare instead of the medium she ordered, & she found it a bit tough. She didn't say anything at the time (not in her nature), & I'm confident they would have corrected it quickly had we raised it. Still, at this price point, you expect it to land right the first time.

Atmosphere & Vibe:

We were seated in the basement dining room (one of three levels). I joked it might be the'ugly people section,' but in reality it was the opposite, just a great mix of people.

Families, date nights, multi-generational celebrations, groups like ours… it felt lively but not overwhelming. You could actually have a conversation without shouting, which isn't always a given in a busy steakhouse.

The building itself adds a lot. Historic Old Montréal charm, heavy wood, warm lighting-it feels like a place with stories in the walls.

Closing:

Gibby's delivers exactly what its reputation promises: a classic, high-quality steakhouse experience done right.

It's not cheap, but it's not trying to be. This is a place for occasions. Celebrations. When you want to lean in a little & enjoy it.

Would I go every week? No.
Would I go again? Absolutely, when the moment calls for it.

A couple small notes:
• No mashed potatoes (surprisingly missed by a few at the table, especially for softer options)
• Not exactly vegetarian-friendly… but that shouldn't come as a shock

At the end of the day, Gibby's is about steak, tradition, & experience & it delivers on all three, even if not every plate lands perfectly.

Had a wonderful evening here with my girlfriend. The blue cheese wedge salad was one of the best I've ever had & the beef Wellington was excellent. Our servers Vitali & Marie-eve were awesome. Would definitely come back.

been coming for years...was there just this past weekend March 21, 2026. quality has seriously dropped. the iceberg wedge salad...swimming in low grade blue cheese dressing, no blue cheese. the filet mignon, weak presentation drowning in sauce, so much sauce, what are you trying to cover up? the hatchet job on the meat? the asparagus. looked like last night's leftovers, limp. Monte Carlo potatoes, they used to be made with care & a were a beautiful sight, this time around they were unsightly, very unappetizing. Service was great. we will have to find a new venue for our birthday celebrations.

Had a wonderful lunch here with family for a party. Personally, I had the Gibbys Salad & the Pepper Steak which were both delicious! A thank you to Vitali, Alex M., & Adib for their great service & for making our experience more than enjoyable!

It's so sad to see this iconic restaurant having lost its edge. The steak was pretty good, but that's about it. The salad is different, the monte carlo was inedible, as were the desserts. I don't need to go back, too bad.

We come from vacations & we saw this restaurant online & looks so good & I went yesterday with my partner to have dinner , the vibes , the food & everything was excellent , definitely a restaurant I will come back but it was a issue with my experience at this restaurant the service was really bad, I think his name is Salomon ( sorry if I don't remember his name) he was nice at the beginning but after he took out order that was it , he stop taking care of our table , we finish the salad & he never removed our plates we finish our meal & he did not take our plates away, he serve us water & the glass was dirty, he just stop approaching to us , & you can tell he was just talking with the tables who order bottles of wines ( we're about to buy one but after seeing that we don't want it anymore)I believe if you go to a fancy & expensive restaurant you are expected to have a really nice quality of food & a excellent experience with the service, in the other hand his co worker he took care of us so we decided to tip him instead that our' server' anyways , the food is was delicious so we are coming back, but definitely the manager need to have a talk with this guy. & hoping you guys can read my review!
