Went with my friend on a Tuesday night for a casual supper & was blown away by both the service & quality of the food.
As a starter, I had the oysters which were from Newfoundland & were phenomenal. I had to try the beef wellington which lived up to the expectations as it is what they are known for. Overall the food was simply impeccable.
For anyone with any allergies, be reassured that the staff took my nut allergy very seriously, & tried to accommodate as much as possible. Our waiter explained everything with much detail, & the staff was incredibly friendly.
10/10, could not recommend anymore
My husband & I were visiting from out of town & celebrating a really big milestone, & I had been really looking forward to trying the beef Wellington. It was very good, & overall everything was going well at first.
The only issue was that my side of mashed potatoes was forgotten. I reminded them, & they eventually brought it out, but by then we had already finished our main course. The plate itself was hot, & the top of the mashed potatoes felt warm, but the middle was very cold, like straight out of the fridge, which was really unexpected on the first bite.
I was honestly so shocked when I tasted it & let them know right away. They did take it off my order, which I appreciated, but it was still really disappointing that my last bite & last taste of the night ended up being cold mashed potatoes :(
Bar George is in a league of its own. Set inside the breathtaking 19th century mansion of Sir George Stephen, the space alone is worth the visit - intricate wood panelling, grand fireplaces, stained-glass windows, & a sense of occasion around every corner. It feels like dining inside a living piece of Montreal history.
The food matches the setting beautifully. Executive Chef Kevin Ramasawmy's take on British-inspired cuisine with a Québécois twist is creative, refined, & deeply satisfying. We had the Beef Wellington & it was absolutely stunning - perfectly executed & full of flavour. The cocktail list is equally impressive, & the sommelier's wine recommendations were spot on.
Service was warm, attentive, & genuinely gracious throughout the entire evening. Whether you're celebrating something special or just want one of the finest dining experiences Montreal has to offer, Bar George delivers every time. An absolute must.
Overall Impression:
Bar George is one of those rare places that gets the balance just right, upscale without being pretentious. It's a place that makes you feel like you're having a bit of an elevated experience, but in a relaxed, unforced way.
I visited with my wife & my brother, who was in from Northern Ontario. We had tickets to a clown gala cabaret later that evening, & Bar George felt like the perfect place to start the night. Drinks, a proper meal, & an atmosphere that sets a tone.
It delivered on all of it.
What I Liked:
Drinks were exactly what you want them to be. I had a Peroni, my brother stuck with his rye & ginger, & my wife ordered a Caesar-all well done.
For food, my wife & I went with the beef Wellington, & my brother had the sirloin. We loved our meal-rich, satisfying, & well executed.
What stood out most was my brother's reaction. He's a steak guy & not easily impressed, & he genuinely loved it. Cooked perfectly, & the reduced au jus added something a little different from the usual. That says a lot.
Service was friendly & attentive overall. The only small knock was that the first round of drinks took a little longer than expected, but everything flowed smoothly after that.
We also arrived about 30 minutes early for our reservation & were accommodated without any fuss, which is always appreciated.
Atmosphere & Vibe:
This is where Bar George really separates itself.
The space is visually stunning, rich woodwork, intricate detailing, & a sense of history that you feel the moment you walk in. It's the kind of place where you can't help but look around a bit.
Add in a DJ playing at just the right volume… present, but not overpowering & the whole room carries a relaxed, confident energy. It feels intentional without trying too hard.
We sat in the bar area, which is first come, first served & honestly my preferred spot. It feels a little more alive.
It's upscale, but warm. Stylish, but comfortable. A hard balance to strike & they do it well.
Closing:
Bar George is more than just a place to grab a drink or a meal, it's an experience without the attitude.
It's not cheap, but it's worth it.
If you're looking for something that sits between casual & refined, where you can enjoy great food, strong drinks, & a space that actually adds to the night, this is your place.
Perfect for date nights, hosting out-of-town guests, or just treating yourself to something a little better than average.
worst food I have ever, wait 60 mins for a plate dog food. They called it beef Wellington
I had the most amazing dinner & drinks at Bar George tonight, & I cannot recommend enough! I originally planned to go to Bar George for a classy pre-Lady Gaga dinner & unfortunately she cancelled… instead, Bar George & our server Kevin became the stars of our night. My friend & I split the incredible lobster risotto & beef Wellington & Kevin provided delicious wine pairing recommendations for each course. Definitely include on your visit to Montreal! Magnifique👌!
The best Beef Wellington of Montreal. Period! & those in the know, they know how that dish is technically hard to get right, which goes to tell you how skilled their kitchen brigade happens to be! Tip top quality ingredients. Superb service as well. It is not cheap, but what is cheap, nowadays, downtown Montreal (at the exception of the fast food joints...& even those are not as cheap as you might think)? Skip the restaurant area, go to the bar (very pretty!). & I hope they are done, soon, with the current renovations in front of the restaurant.
The Beef Wellington is the signature dish on the menu, but it was a disappointment. The crust wasn't crispy, & the sauce was salty. Given its reputation & price, it should have been impeccable. Perhaps the mess from the exterior renovations is affecting the kitchen's performance.
=======
The beef wellington was pretty good with the sauce. However, the chicken plate was not good. The chicken was dry & hard to chew on. It costs 80$ for that chicken plate… i would recommend the appetizers for this restaurant but if it is a main course, it is not worth the price. Reservation cost money also ..
New years Eve dinner scam with chef Ramaswamy. Decided to treat my wife to a 5 course dinner at Bar George for new years eve for $ 280 a pop ! Big mistake here is why: We are not food critiques or fancy food influencers lol we are very simple straight frwrd no BS customers. The menu says lobster tail as an appetizer we expect to get the lobster tail not a sorry chunk of lobster the size of a shrimp impaled on a squewer ! The Ramaswamy came out to our table, I let him know straight up this is not what it says on the menu ! He replied bluntly that it's only a piece of lobster tail not the whole tail expecting me to back down ! I pointed out to him that the menu said other wise, please see the menu photo below & decide for yourself ! He laughed it off & left. From there on the whole menu went crashing down : soggy stuffed pasta raw for aldente, with white truffles & a creamy white sauce that you can get for 20 dollars anywhere in little Italy, then came black boiled cod which was tasteless & disgusting not worth $15 dollars at any fish & ships. The tuna Wellington was a disgrace ! who ever George is he must be turning in his grave … the Pastry bland, the tuna uncooked & cold .. & finally a sorbet with no taste on top of tiny chocolate bar with pears that you over pay at $ 7,50 dollar price tag from any French patisserie on the plateau! All in all one dollar appetizer + $20 pasta + $ 15 cod +$ 10 tuna Wellington & $ 7,5 $ dessert for a max total a $ 53 worth experience sold at $ 280.l left 20% for the service because they were doing their job & they paid for our drinks 2 cocktails & a coke zero to make it up to us ! So for two we paid with tips & taxes $750 & there you have it : a New Year's Eve dinner scam in deed ! I left a note to fire the chef because it's a failure & he is rude on top of it ! Just saying first & last experience at mount Stephen hotel … it's not about paying money it's about being cheated out of your money while your trying to finish the year with a classy meal lol !
The decor & elegance are exquisite & very rich
The food was also excellent. Mushroom cream soup was10/10, The beef Wellington7/10, The lobster risotto 10/10. Congratulations to chef Kevin & chef Donald
The surface was excellent. Jonathan & Julian were very friendly & efficient
The only problem that should be corrected is the loud contemporary music. It should be lowered down in volume & replaced by light classical music to go with the classical deco
This was the first meal we ate in Montreal which was probably a mistake because it's virtually downhill from here. First of all the former mansion is breath taking & over the top. It smells of rich mahogany! The menu & the food are equally breathtaking! The beef Wellington is not to be missed. My only slight knock is they didn't have enough servers working the dining room so the service was a little slow through no fault of the server. It's possible they are having staffing issues like almost every restaurant. Highly recommend!
We ordered the beef wellington, drinks & dessert. Everything was divine.
Kevin provided exceptional service & his wine pairing recommendations hit the mark.
Can't wait to return to this beautiful spot!
Best Beef Wellington you can have in my opinion. Love going here when visiting Montreal.
Fantastic vibe. Attentive service.
We ordered a great starter serving of mushroom soup & oysters. Well done!
Main order of Lobster Risotto & Beef Wellington. Unfortunately, we were served the Wellington & Halibut. They realized immediately took them away & 15 minutes later we got the proper course. This doesn't bother me expect for no mention of making it right. Anyway, the Wellington was fantastic. The Lobster Risotto was great if you like curry. It wasn't overpowering but tasted like, garam masala was a seasoning. However, if you don't like curry, the was nothing in the description to warn you of the curry taste.
Other than that, all else was good. 4/5. But I'm being friendly on the service, otherwise a 3/5, because you should at least offer a free drink or something due to the mixed up order…
I loved it, it's an special place for special moments I went with my wife & we had a great time there, the attention is really good, the place is really beautiful you can have really good pictures there, & finally the food was really good, I ordered the abeef Wellington & it was perfect.
Advice: there are plenty of parking places near & once inside try to take a picture with you on the stairs that drives you to the second floor that will be a perfect photo.
Wellington fell flat. Meat & pastry was undercooked. & served on a pool of unnecessary variety of sauces. The dish costs almost $80… Extremely disappointing. At least the service was good.
Worth the experience but its on the expensive side. It was originally a private residence that was incredibly extravagant in its day, it still is.
I recommend that you look at the menu beforehand as it is limited. The items they do serve are all excellent. Its on the Michelin list. I had the beef Wellington they have been serving since they opened it was very rich, decadent. The beet salad was amazing.
