Walked into Bar George for dinner with friends & were greeted with something unusual: before even sitting down, we were informed the minimum tip is 20%. Nothing says'welcome' like being told how much gratitude you owe before you've even seen the menu.
After dinner I paid the whole bill. Later at home we noticed we were charged for two extra drinks we never ordered. Not a huge amount of money, but that's not the point - it's a matter of honesty.
I called the restaurant & was told to email the manager. I emailed two contacts (apparently a manager & an accountant). No reply. Twice.
So the system seems to be:
1. Demand a generous tip upfront.
2. Add mystery drinks to the bill.
3. Ignore the customer afterwards.
If you dine here, read your bill carefully - apparently the drinks menu may continue after you leave.
The space inside Le Mount Stephen is genuinely jaw-dropping; all mahogany, stained glass & ornate woodwork that makes you feel like you're dining inside a Downton Abbey fever dream. I walked in & immediately felt underdressed, & under-funded.
Then came the cocktail menu. A perfectly executed Old Fashioned arrived in a glass so elegant I briefly considered not drinking it & just taking it home as decor. Then the bill arrived & I realized I had just sipped the equivalent of a car payment. The food - British-inspired, locally sourced, thoughtfully plated - is lovely in theory, though the portions have a very'European vacation' energy: beautiful, memorable, & not quite enough to prevent you from stopping at a shawarma place on the way home.
Come for the architecture, stay for the ambiance, & eat a full meal beforehand. Bar George is a magnificent stage with a slightly overpriced script - but as a backdrop for feeling fancy for two hours, it has absolutely zero competition in this city.
I love to go there for drinks with my friends. One of my favorite bar in Montreal.
The hostess working on Valentine's Day was very rude & unaccommodating. She wasn't helpful at all, which was especially disappointing given the occasion. We were just hoping to grab a drink. Overall, a frustrating experience. I wouldn't recommend.
New years Eve dinner scam with chef Ramaswamy. Decided to treat my wife to a 5 course dinner at Bar George for new years eve for $ 280 a pop ! Big mistake here is why: We are not food critiques or fancy food influencers lol we are very simple straight frwrd no BS customers. The menu says lobster tail as an appetizer we expect to get the lobster tail not a sorry chunk of lobster the size of a shrimp impaled on a squewer ! The Ramaswamy came out to our table, I let him know straight up this is not what it says on the menu ! He replied bluntly that it's only a piece of lobster tail not the whole tail expecting me to back down ! I pointed out to him that the menu said other wise, please see the menu photo below & decide for yourself ! He laughed it off & left. From there on the whole menu went crashing down : soggy stuffed pasta raw for aldente, with white truffles & a creamy white sauce that you can get for 20 dollars anywhere in little Italy, then came black boiled cod which was tasteless & disgusting not worth $15 dollars at any fish & ships. The tuna Wellington was a disgrace ! who ever George is he must be turning in his grave … the Pastry bland, the tuna uncooked & cold .. & finally a sorbet with no taste on top of tiny chocolate bar with pears that you over pay at $ 7,50 dollar price tag from any French patisserie on the plateau! All in all one dollar appetizer + $20 pasta + $ 15 cod +$ 10 tuna Wellington & $ 7,5 $ dessert for a max total a $ 53 worth experience sold at $ 280.l left 20% for the service because they were doing their job & they paid for our drinks 2 cocktails & a coke zero to make it up to us ! So for two we paid with tips & taxes $750 & there you have it : a New Year's Eve dinner scam in deed ! I left a note to fire the chef because it's a failure & he is rude on top of it ! Just saying first & last experience at mount Stephen hotel … it's not about paying money it's about being cheated out of your money while your trying to finish the year with a classy meal lol !
It was an amazing experience during lunch time. I loved every single detail from this place. The food, the drinks, the music, the place itself, all did a great combination!!!
Service is shit
Food is pricey but fresh
Table dirty
Will recommend to visit but not to stay for drinks or lunch not worth it
Take pictures & leave
I've there for brunch & for dinner. Both times, the food & service were amazing. Highly recommend. Bonus: I received a free drink for my birthday.
I was really looking forward to this one as it's such a beautiful space, but it honestly let me down. I was seated at the bar & took quite a while to even be acknowledged while it wasn't very busy. Ordered a cocktail that was pretty basic & a burger. The burger was ok, nicely cooked - but the bun was very dry. Salad with it was nice, but you can get a better burger for half the price. No one came by to ask about the food or even if I wanted another drink. When time for staff turnover, they ask everyone to settle up which I always hate. That's not on the servers but rather on the restaurant's tip structure, but it's just not great practise as they were pressuring all the guests (the people beside me were talking about it as well after they agreed). Overall though the food was average at best & service really not great. Very nice space though!
We ordered the beef wellington, drinks & dessert. Everything was divine.
Kevin provided exceptional service & his wine pairing recommendations hit the mark.
Can't wait to return to this beautiful spot!
Had Sunday lunch. Great setting & food of high quality. Wished they had more gluten free options. The food arrived before we had our drinks so a little off on service.
Bar George - A Stunning Blend of History, Luxury, & Elegance
Bar George at the Le Mount Stephen hotel is truly a spectacular experience from the moment you walk through the doors. The historic architecture is breathtaking rich woodwork, ornate details, & a grand, gilded-age feel that transports you to another era. Every corner of the space reflects luxury & refinement, making it one of Montréal's most visually stunning dining & cocktail destinations.
The dark, intimate ambiance makes it the perfect setting to enjoy their luxurious cocktails. Whether you're relaxing at the bar or seated in one of their elegant dining spaces, each drink feels like a crafted masterpiece, balanced, flavorful, & beautifully presented.
One thing to keep in mind is that Bar George can get very busy. The wait can be long, especially during peak hours or if you're coming with a larger group, so reservations are highly recommended. It's definitely worth planning ahead to fully enjoy everything this incredible venue has to offer.
I'll absolutely be returning, whether it's for another unforgettable meal, to sip cocktails in that gorgeous atmosphere, or even to stay at the Le Mount Stephen hotel. Bar George is one of those places that leaves a lasting impression, combining historic charm with modern luxury perfectly.
Fantastic vibe. Attentive service.
We ordered a great starter serving of mushroom soup & oysters. Well done!
Main order of Lobster Risotto & Beef Wellington. Unfortunately, we were served the Wellington & Halibut. They realized immediately took them away & 15 minutes later we got the proper course. This doesn't bother me expect for no mention of making it right. Anyway, the Wellington was fantastic. The Lobster Risotto was great if you like curry. It wasn't overpowering but tasted like, garam masala was a seasoning. However, if you don't like curry, the was nothing in the description to warn you of the curry taste.
Other than that, all else was good. 4/5. But I'm being friendly on the service, otherwise a 3/5, because you should at least offer a free drink or something due to the mixed up order…
A fantastic spot for cocktails & drinks. Everyone - from the door staff to the servers & bartenders - is cheerful, creating a welcoming atmosphere. I've visited twice from Ottawa & plan to return with friends to show off this incredible place.
Great service, loved the drinks, & the bar bites. The burger was delicious.
